How about the difference between the r7 2700/2700x and the i5?
So should I pick the i5 9600k or the r5 2600x keeping in mind of price and its performance in games like Fortnite? It depends. If you are comparing processors from the same brand and generation, I would always pick the one with 12 threads. Having only 6, more powerful each cores than the 12 threads alone, you will get better results in most of nowadays games (not for much) as developers don't seem to be really optimizing well for performance when using threads, but the processor will be able to last longer and perform better in future games.
I just think that the price gap and minor performance gain that the six processors have over the twelve threads ones just doesn't overcome the much higher durability that more threads offer.
I5 definitely, especially if you game at 1080p or 1440p resolution. So

I'm going for 144 Hz, does that make a difference?I would recommend 6c/12t or 8c/8t as games like BFV are already saturating 6c/6t cpu’s.
Edit: if you are staying at 60hz, probably doesnt matter. 100hz plus then more and fast cores.

Also why are people talking about cores here? He asked about gaming and Fortnite. I ran a 4c/8t CPU for 7 years and I had no issue with any game.
