600m mouse freezing

I have a 600m running Windows XP home. I have downloaded the lastest
drivers for the touchpad and installed. When using the computer, after 5
minutes, an hour or any other amount of time, the curser freezes and the
only soloution is to turn off with the power button and restart. It will
happen many times a day. The problem has been there even with the older
drivers. I must have a conflict somewhere (I suspect Norton AV) but not
sure. Has anyone else had this problem and how did you solve it?

are you able to use the keyboard to save your work and exit windows when
this occurs? do you or have you had an external mouse connected? external
mouse drivers may be the source of the conflict with the touchpad.

No external mouse and I have never connected or used one. No I can't do
anything. The keyboard doesn't respond. Alt tab doesn't work, Ctrl Alt del
doesn't work. The windows menu key on the keyboard doesn't work. Another
problem I didn't mention before is when I walk away and the computer goes
into standby, sometimes it quits functioning..When I press a key or touch
the touchpad, nothing happens. I don't always have the screen saver on but
at this time it is. It will start but then after a while it is frozen.
Ever since I have had this computer, I have had blue screens and freezes. I
have reloaded many time (5 or 6) and have still had the problems. All of
them at various times and frequency.
I have used the supplied drivers and the updated drivers at different times.
Some fresh loaded, some updated.
Thanks

then the mouse freezing is just a symptom. the problem is that your
computer completely freezes which probably has nothing to do with the mouse.
i can now appreciate why the tech in your other post/story was so
inquisitive... with incomplete information you are sure to get incomplete
and bad answers.... run diagnostics on the system continuously until a
failure shows up. given the number of times you have reloaded the system,
and assuming that you loaded the chipset drivers et al then this is likely a
hardware problem... given the new motherboard that would rude this to a
memory or cpu issue, or perhaps overheating problem (bad fan).... let us
know the results of running diagnostics.

Actually this computer has had the keyboard and screen replaced. (my fault)
the fan replaced, the motherboard replaced twice. The fan failed and when
they replaced it, there was a clump of dust in the fan. I asked how I could
keep that clean and he said you can't. Poor design that I can see. The the
memory slot on the mother board went bad and they replaced the motherboard.
Then the power supply and motherboard failed - the computer was not
recognizing the ac adapter and the battery wouldn't charge. The reason I
called tech was not for freezing and blue screen...that has happened since I
got the computer. I called for the nic card. I have run diagnostics
several times. Everything is ok according to that. To solve the heat
issues, I bought a laptap cool pad with a fan. The fan on the computer
blows from the bottom to the back. Doesn't make sense for the air intake to
be on the bottom of a laptop as it is obvious that if you put it on your
lap, the air is blocked.
Like I said these problems have been there since I bought the computer 2
years ago. I will rerun the diagnostic tests and reply then.
thanks

select diagnostics to run continuously until failure... not repeatedly.
leave it running overnight for instance. official or unofficially, dell has
some sort of policy about 'lemons'... i haven't heard about it machines with
lots for some time, but it used to be that if a system had three major
repairs then the next time they replace the whole machine with another
(sometimes of a different model). write a detailed, factual, unopinionated
email to michael_dell@dell.com telling him that you are unsatisfied, have
been more than patient, and asking for a replacement. if they don't respond
in a satisfactory way you have at least laid the foundation for action when
the next problem surfaces.
