Looking for some upgrades to my rig and can't really decide on a CPU (939).
I think I've managed to narrow it down to 3 alternatives which lie basicly in the same price range:
3700+ - 276€
3800+ - 328€
3800+ X2 - 354€

The 3700+ has 1 Mb-L2 which is always nice but which one would you recommend and why?

Thanks for all helpful answers :p

Urian,

From what I've been reading (and the fact i just baught a 3700), the 3600 and 3800 all use the venice core. the new core (and the same core the FX series uses) is the San Diego, which the 3700 uses. I think you'll get better performance out of that one because of the higher Cache. Plus I think the numbering AMD uses these days is messed up. they had to keep the 3700 number lower than 3800 because it's clock speed was lower, even though it's performance may be higher.

anyone wanna correct me if i'm wrong

You are right. But in term of performance, the extra cache does not provide much of a performance boost in most application. This is PARTIALLY due to the on-die memory controller that reduce acces time too the memory by a fair margin keeping the processor fed most of the time thus you need less "bufer"(L2 cache) in between.

Thats why AMD give 100 points for extra cache and 200 for extra 200 mhz!

IF he doesnt need the dual core, I'd gow ith venice 3200+ and OC it close to 2.4ghz(~4000+)... Thats the best price/perf ratio.

If you do multi-task a lot, the 3800+ is the way to go!

Asus P4P800DX, P4C 2.6ghz@3.25ghz, 2X512 OCZ PC4000 3-4-4-8, MSI 6800Ultra stock, 2X30gig Raid0

A lot depends on the type of user you are. If you use a lot of SMP enabled progs, the X2 is for you.
If this is primarily a gaming rig, the cheapest is best, if the extra $ will be spent on better graphics.
I picked up a 3200 last week, and it is currently folding away @ 2.45 ghz, using the stock fan, and pc3200 ram, with a 5/6 divider (memory set to 333, but running @ 400) and the HTT set to 4X. V-core is bumped to 1.45v. OCing the venice core is fairly easy, and safe.

Either get the Venice 3200 or the DualCore 3800. Any others are a waste or your money.

The Venice 3200 can do 3800 with stock voltage and HSF.

They are very silently sneaking up on you and stealing all your beer!
*Bwahahahaaaaa!*

Edit: Oh, I forgot to mention. Graphic card is a 7800 GT (or GTX, haven't decided yet)

I know the 3200 venice can be OCd to (at least) 2,8 GHz but can't e.g. the X2 3800 also be Ocd for some nice speeds? :p

[b)Edit2: In this review http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2484&p=1, why do they reccomend the X2 3800 when it appears as if the normal 3800 outperforms it in almost every test?

At least 2.8Ghz?! Yeah maybe with phasechange. Try 2.4 - 2.5 on air, 2.6-2.7 on water.

I'm also kinda sceptic but that's what it says in this article at least.

Whoha.. 2.8 GHz with stock cooling and stock vcore ?? That is pretty damn impressive, but I would certainly not take it for granted that each venice chip overclocks like that.

0504 eh! The january date on that chip was a long time before the "official" release of venice. I'm guessing it's an engineering sample, or at least a "special" chip.
My venice 3200 needs 1.45v to get to 2450mhz. Since it's new, I haven't taken it up too high yet, but 2.8 on stock cooling looks out of range. Even 2.6 may be pushing it.

My winchester is curently @ 2.6Ghz / 1.46Vcore, so I could almost believe that of a good venice example.

Same as 3200+ except you have a choice of slighly higher multiplier.
How much, 10 vs 11?
The 3200 is about 50€ cheaper but since I've only got air cooling I'm not quite sure how much I can OC it (seen both running stable at about 2,8)
