What is it with your psychotic paranoia,
Cloud computing doesnt necessarily mean hosted by an internet provider.
It could be a service hosted at your property, data centre or office.

I wouldnt mind having a private server that acts as a workhorse and central data storage for the workplace of computers.

It really depends on what's being done in the cloud. I do technical support for Forefront Online Protection for Exchange and it's not that bad of a product. Saves admins bandwidth, hardware, and headaches.

I guess a lot of people here are thinking about individuals and cloud computing and not businesses and cloud computing.

I'll admit that I wouldn't want the stuff I have on my personal computer going to the cloud just yet but businesses can (and do) save tons of money but going to cloud based spam filtering, archives, mail servers, etc.

I'm pretty much a MS fan, but I'd have to say, bad bet morons. I have .05 interest in cloud computing.

I'm all down for the cloud, as soon as as I get 125/125 MiB fibre with a ping under 50, thank you.
Microsoft is making a huge gamble, I hope they don't fail.

I like the concept of the cloud, but give me the tools to set up my own cloud, such as an easy backup server for my families treasured photos, but don't ever expect me to not only trust you with my data but to actually have to pay you over and over again for the priveledge to do so.

The only way I will move to the Cloud before I die is if I am forced to through mandatory Internet connection and through forced OS integration. I do not fancy the Internet for true security one bit except when doing e-commerce, you have to put some trust out there.

Until Internet connections are a pre-paid service with your home, apartment, condo, etc. and not a separate bill I think its ignorant to move consumers into the Cloud environment especially when you look at the economy where consumers are making budget cuts left and right and Internet bills keep skyrocketing.

If hes betting the company on the cloud he must be stuck in one. This guy is the bigest idiot Ive ever seen. Does he ever say anything or do anything intelligent? Steve Ballmer is the fat kid that for some reason got to hang out with the cool kids and reap the benefits but at some point will end up exposing himself doing something really stupid. Gigantic fail coming for Ballmer and Microsoft if this is true.

By the way they can have their cloud. Ive got all the storage I need right here in my control. Storage is cheap and is one the parts of the PC thats seeing some great advancements. Why would I ever store anything on the cloud? There are no benefits for the consumer at all.

The problem with cloud computing is that whoever controls the cloud can control your access to your own data.

Privacy, security, and the other issues are important, but can be worked around, and be made better than your hard drive at home.

No thank you. Unless its designed so its impossible for them to collect ANY data on my usage habbits, or search or access ANY of my personal data, they can rot in hell.

I would love to be able to access all my files from any device anywhere int he world. Sounds great, but ONLY if im in control of the data. Not them.

Hmm, if the information is stored on thier equipment, technically they would own all information stored there. Not your files and information anymore. No thanks, learning more about Linux now.

i'm sure our govt is all for cloud computing... the more willing you are to give your data away, the more willing they are to sell it to the govt...

I do not like the idea of having my applications and data stored on somebody else's computer in some other part of the world.

I do not like how Microsoft is attempting to insert itself between a user and the users' applications and data. It appears to be nothing more than an attempt to generate additional revenue at the expense of the user.

I think that I will store all my files on an offline computer, then have an internet machine with only the O/S files on it........which would be Linux. Hello SP games, rock the Linux world.

they already have access to all your data. Do you really think your email goes from your computer straight to your friends computer without ever touching any hardware in between?

Answer me this:

I open up a bogus gmail account using a made up name and start using it to email my friends. within 3 months of constant use, somehow my real name is on that account.

How does that happen?

I'll tell ya how. Because immediately my friends figure out it's me, they save my email address in their email contact list under my real name. If you think google isn't snooping on that shit, you are stupid. They not only snoop on that, they use the info to update my (unofficial)profile automatically.

Cloud computing is coming. Like it or not. It's actually already here to a certain degree.

Killerclick says "you can lose your data if your computer is stolen."

True. But your solution is to hand it over in the first place. By that logic I should give away all my money to prevent being mugged.

Trust Micros**t with my data? No way, nohow, no sir.

Given Canadian privacy laws, I doubt it's even legal to market an operating system that requires you to share your data. If Microsoft tries this, the EU too will be up in arms--this will make antitrust look like a day in the park.

Um, that's precisely why I don't put much on the internet--and as of now I have that choice. Cloud computing eliminates that choice, which is why I will never use it.

Which part of that is not available today?

I'm shopping for new software...but if it resides on the internet, go fu## yourselves. I want it on my computer, wherever my computer is, ready to run, and without delay.

Linux, here we come!

These guys are so high, they've vested their faith in Cloud Computing. Bob Marley would be proud of them!

On a serious note, I wouldn't trust cloud computing with anything in the world short of entertainment. Post-processed gaming. That's about it. Even then, it would only be a substitute for those on a budget or using a system that's anything but a gaming system.

There's absolutely nothing anyone can do to make me want to run my data entirely out of a different system that I can't physically touch with my toes. Yes, I keep my home built PC beneath my desk, directly in front of my feet. Nope, I won't yank my hard drive and become a host on some supercomputer running all my porn, bill payments for every account I strive off of and my financial information from taxes.

I would hate to be the person who loses everything because some douchebag who is click-happy with their mouse introduces trojans and worms into the infrastructure like it's going out of style.

Yeah...I'd put as much faith in this as I could throw it (and its REALLY heavy, lol). I don't ever see enough people trusting random people with ALL of their personal files. AND, all this does it make it easier to get/spread virus', as well as opens more gateways for hackers. Nobody end user is going to ever use this.

-Example-
Day 1 : "Okay honey! That nice IT guy who got on our computer remotely to fix it is done! Now we can check our Facebooks even though we're 40 and mainly just use it to creep our teenage children! Yay!"

Day 2: "Okay honey! I just finished booking that trip to Florida, which is going to cost $2000, but that's okay because I just charged it onto my $15,000 limit credit card! Yay!"

Day 3: "Okay honey! I just got off the phone with the bank and credit card companies and they pretty much just said that I have no more left in any of my bank accounts AND all of my cards are maxed! Yay!

Wait...what?"

Saudi Arabia - going rate for something advertised as a 1 megabit connection is about $75 a month and it's heavily filtered.

And if the 70% of Microsoft working on the cloud goes to 90% soon, I really, really hope they got Win7 right.
