Hi, I wanted to ask about what card is the better value at the money for the given price points. I recently purchased a 7900 XT at Canada computers for 1100CAD, it’s the XFX merc series. They have a 15 day return policy and was wondering if the 7900 XTX would be the smarter future proofing option at around 1330 CAD.

I’m looking for 1080p-1440p gaming maybe stepping into the realm of 4k later down the line but no guarantee. Also running a 4 monitor setup.

I was pushed into getting a new GPU because mine died after a few years, and I wanted to go AMD because of the higher VRAM currently offered as I want to hold onto this GPU for a while. I just can’t really find many threads about the recent prices and comparisons between the cards.

I am pleased with the 7900 XT so far but just want to know if the extra is going to go a long way for an XTX or if I’m fine where I stand

Thanks a lot!

There is just a 4GB VRAM difference between those 2 cards. So it's not worth getting the XTX model, IMO, by paying extra 230 CAD.

Well, I don't know where in Canada you are but CC has an open-box special in the following locations if you can reach any of them:
  • Downtown Toronto
  • Newmarket
  • Downtown Ottawa
  • East Vancouver
It's that same XFX Radeon RX 7900 XTX MERC310 Black 24GB for $1216. The new one did cost $1339 but now it's $60 off at $1280 at Canada Computers. Even better, Memory Express has it on every store's front door that they'll beat any other advertised price (specifically from Newegg and Canada Computers) by 10% of the price difference between them. Since it's $1370 there, you'd get it for $1271. It's not a huge difference but $9 is still a week's supply of large double-doubles, eh?

So, since that's a difference of $90, they'll beat Canada Computers by $9 and it would cost you only $1271 brand-new. If you want Starfield, that would be the best buy because open-box cards don't come with Starfield. There's more though, because XFX has a sale on the MERC310 XT as well for $1080 but why would you pay that when they're selling also the Powercolor RX 7900 XT Hellhound for $1040?

According to the TechPowerUp GPU Database, the XTX is, on average, 18% faster than the XT with RT off, 16% faster with RT on (somewhere between the RTX 3090 and RTX 3090 Ti IIRC) and has 20% more VRAM.

However, if you buy new, the XFX XTX is 23% more expensive than the Powercolor XT. I would strongly advise buying new because that Starfield bundle is just an incredible deal. That's like bundling a card with Cyberpunk 2077!

Do I think that paying an extra 23% for 17% better gaming performance (average regardless of whether you have RT on or off) and 20% more VRAM is worth it? If you have it to spend, AB-SO-LUTELY! I got really lucky with my XTX because it was an open-box from newegg.ca for $1148. I had already purchased an RX 6600 specifically to get Starfield so I didn't care about the bundle at that point. If you can stretch to $1280, I would say to do so.

If you don't have it to spend though, I would strongly recommend the Powercolor RX 7900 XT Hellhound. The XFX has no lighting and the Hellhound does, despite costing $40 less. Powercolor and XFX are both members of AMD's "Holy Trinity" of AIB partners along with Sapphire so it's not like you need to worry about owning a Powercolor card and the performance will be similar in all respects. Memory Express doesn't carry the Hellhound XT so you can't use their price match guarantee.

Not bad, eh? ;)

The only reason that I got my ASRock RX 7900 XTX PG is that newegg.ca had an open-box for like $1148CAD, making it cheaper than the RX 7900 XT at the time. Now, if you have the extra $230+tax to spend and it won't hurt, then sure, go for it. If that extra $230 would be difficult, then I would keep what you have.

Note: The XFX RX 7900 XTX MERC model is currently $1300CAD at Canada Computers and the Sapphire Pulse model is available at newegg.ca for the same $1300CAD.

Another "return the XT and get the XTX if at all possible" vote - the price difference is absolutely worth it.
Not only do I agree with you, I would even go so far as to say that the RX 7900 XTX is the best purchase to make among the four top-end cards. Here's a little competition:

1st Place = 4 points
2nd place = 3 points
3rd place = 2 points
4th place = 1 point

Performance:
RX 7900 XT = 85% - 4th place
RTX 4080 = 98% - 3rd place
RX 7900 XTX = 100% - 2nd place
RTX 4090 = 124% - 1st place

Price (in CAD):
RX 7900 XT = 80% ($1039) - 1st place
RTX 4080 = 117% ($1514) - 3rd place
RX 7900 XTX = 100% ($1300) - 2nd place
RTX 4090 = 177% ($2300) - 4th place

VRAM:
RX 7900 XT = 83% (20GB) - 3rd place
RTX 4080 = 67% (16GB) - 4th place
RX 7900 XTX = 100% (24GB) - 1st place (tied)
RTX 4090 = 100% (24GB) - 1st place (tied)

Final Scores:
4th place - RTX 4080 = 5 POINTS
3rd Place - RX 7900 XT = 6 POINTS
2nd Place - RTX 4090 = 9 POINTS
1st Place - RX 7900 XTX = 10 POINTS

It's just math. ;)
