7900GT or X1800XT

I need to buy video card and I am stuck between two cards, the 7900gt and the x1800xt. I believe that the 7900gt is better but I don't know if its worth $50 more, considering that dx10 will be out in a couple of months. I have thought about getting a 7600gt but I really dont want to get it because I probably wont be getting a dx10 card as soon as it comes out, (I will probably wait a few months to make sure no one is having any major problems with them) and I want a good card for gaming. BF2, COD2, and games coming out in the near future. I am also open to any other cards ya'll might suggest. Budget about $250.

The 7900 GT is not better at stock speeds, in fact the X1800 XT is a bit better more often than not.

If you're an overclocker the 7900 GT offers a bit more headroom though. But at stock speeds I'd go for a cheaper 512mb X1800XT any day of the week.
 
Go for the cheaper. In this case, the X1800XT is cheaper. You can't go wrong with either one.

Like the other guy said, X1800XT is little better than stock 7900GT, while the 7900GT is a better OCer.

Will the x1800xt be good for gaming till about March or April of '07? I would think so but I am just making sure.

It'll be good for gaming until around March/April '08.

I have a 9700pro (4 years old i think) that still games reasonably well today. You just have to put up with medium/low settings at 1024x768.
 
I would either get the X1900GT for around $200 or get the X1900XT with a mail-in-rebate for around $280.

I read the following from another forum and concur.

"If you buy the X1900GT, for a slight hit in performance (which can be made up with overclocking) you get a single slot card, that's a lot quieter and uses less power then the X1800 XT."

Personally, I would wait for DX10 to mature like you said but for 6 months or so and get the X1900XT. If you're looking to get a DX10 a little sooner, I'd save the 80 bucks and get the X1900GT.
 
I dont think he's to concerned with the cooling solution.

Although single slot gives less headache for your expansion cards,
the X1800XT would still have the slight performance advantage.

7900GT has a nice amount of headroom, then again....so does the X1800 :twisted:

Hmm, the X1900GT beats the X1800XT at 1600x1200 with HDR on in Oblivion. Not by much, but it does.

I should of reread the original message where T_Bone wants to play COD2 and BF2.

If dual slot isn't a problem then go for the X1800XT over the X1900GT but looking at COD2 benchmarks, the 7900GT beats up even the X1800XT.

And for $25 more from Newegg for the Leadtek version, it'd be worth it.

Though for the price, I stand with what I said earlier, my first choice would be to get the X1900XT.

Btw, the X1800XT 256 MB version is cheaper than the 7900GT not the 512MB version which at Newegg is over a $110 more expensive.

Lol. Why don't you try being rational? Tell me, when you hunted down the only benchmark where the X1900 GT comes close enough to the X1800 XT to try and prove your point, did you notice that the difference in FPS in your only example of X1900 GT superiority is within the margin of error (72 fps vs 70 fps. are you kidding?).

You also failed to mention that in COD2, the X1800 had a nice lead on the X1900 GT...

..and on COD2 on the benchmarks you provided, the 7900T had, like, a 4fps lead over the X1800 XT in the only playable resolution. HARDLY a slam-dunk over the X1800 XT...

Not to mention, a myriad of other benches out there show the X1800 XT in a more favorable light over the X1900 GT than the two examples you chose.

I owned the 256mb version of the x1800xt and Id say imo it is BETTER than the 7900gt when your dealing with AA and AF. So I could only imagine the 512mb would be a no brainer.

IMO go for the x1800xt, runs really hot though so maybe some after market cooling, but it's better than the 7900gt imo.

And didn't I say that for COD2, go ahead and get the X1800XT over the X1900GT. Why don't you understand what you are reading before you put your foot in your mouth.

I never claimed that the X1900GT was a superior card, I just recommended it because of the single slot solution which I prefer.

Btw, Oblivion at 1600x1200. The X1900GT beats the X1800XT by 5 fps.

In spite of your lame data, I still say every situation. The THG charts were within the margin of error, and I can provide oblivion benches that say otherwise:

Outside the margin of error, the X1800 XT beats it pretty good, dunnitt? In ALL benches and resolutions at the FS review, actually. Check it out.

So I'm inclined to think the THG benches involved a bottleneck, and you're a whiner making a mountain out of a molehill statement (which was, essentially, correct in the first place). The FS benches tell the story, mate.

But don't worry about looking silly by digging up comparisons with a 2 fps difference, mate. We're a forgiving bunch here at the THG forums. :wink:
 
Got bored with OCing, so just playing games. 😀 I might do some mroe OCing later on, too busy playing my games with every possible setting maxed out. 😛

LOL, you ninny. :tongue: That is Oblivion indoors!!!!! :lol: That means squat.

Try the outdoors comparison where it matters and the X1800XT wins. Matter of fact neither of these cards can handle Oblivion at 16x12 unless you seriously tweak the IQ.

The X1900 GT might be a bit quieter and use a bit less power, but the X1800 XT will beat it in every gaming situation, for about the same price.

Not to meantion, IMO and many others, a dual slot cooler is more desireable, blowing the hot air out of the case instead of circulating it within.
 
Those benchmarks are for an X1800XT with 512 MB. Why don't you check out the prices for this card?

$334 on pricewatch. Now, let's do a price / performance comparison.

I'll average all 6 of the benchmarks from firingsquad.

X1800XT (512 MB): $334/38.9 fps = $8.59 per frame

X1900GT : $195/31.3 fps = $6.23 per frame

Since you're talking about the X1800XT with 512 MB, why don't you recommend getting the MSI X1900XT for $275.

X1900XT: $275/41.8 fps = $6.57 per frame

Anyway, I can take the criticism. And to show that I can, I did look at some other data other than pure benchmarks. The X1900GT was running at nearly 90 deg C. I would avoid having a card running this hot.
