That's right I just picked up a 7950 3gb thinking it would see me run bf4 on ultra but no the fps on just high seem worse than the 7770? On shanghai the fps were around 20 when it got busy, with the 7770 it never really dropped below 30.

Any ideas on where I'm going wrong?

Fx 6300
R7950
8gb ddr3

Solution
could be, try updating it with both dx11 and dx10 june2010 (some files in this are needed but dont ship with dx11 that ships with most games).
have you checked your driver status in system/device manager? it maybe you had a bad install or are missing something like.net framework4.51
Even if the CPU is bottlenecking your card you shouldn't really get less fps than your old card so even though you have a small bottleneck I wouldn't count on it to be the issue.

If you look at the thread that Markkk linked to there may be a compatible issue with this card. At least that what the OP concluded in that thread.

What motherboard do you have? Which PCI-e port are you using?

It's the last 2 digits in that series that are the deciding factor of it's quality. The 7950 is comparable to the 7750. Sure it has slightly better stats then the 7700 series, but a 7970 is comparable to the 7770. So you got a lower end in the newer of the 7700 series.

its the same with the NVIDIA cards. A a 740 is the newer version of the 640, 770 is newer version of 670, 780 newer 680. They are just newer versions of the older card with better stats.

that being said, its not surprising that you aren't getting better fps than the 7770 your have a newer version of the lower end 7700 series.

7770 =7970, 7750 = 7950. 7770 > 7950.

wow you couldnt be more wrong.
the 7770 is no where near a 7970 and a 7770 isnt better than a 7950...
the 7770 is the next 1 up from the 7750 and both are worse than a 7850 which in turn is below the 7870 which is less than the 7950

so 7970
7950
7870
7850
7770
7750
is the order your looking for with best at the top...
the 7770 is about 50% weaker and in some cases over 70% weaker than a 7950 itrs the reason the 7950 costs x2 the 7770...
the only time in this series the above didnt hold true was at launch with the 5870 it is comparable to the 7850/7870 because the 6870 was actually slightly weaker performing than the 5870 due to the 5870 having more active shader cores some 1600 compared to 1100 odd...

as for your nvidia comparison... again wrong.
the 740 is a direct replacement for the 650 the 770 is a direct replacement for the 680. direct replacements are just re-badged models with tweaked clocks/power and memory that often cost less than there previous iteration.
the 780 is new arcitecture so is no direect replacement.

it really is behaving like its bottlenecking the low end fps.
can you bump the cpu to 4.3-4.4? (with the rite cooling). like i said try and use it on a bigger screen. your max fps may drop a little but the minimum should come up with either of the above suggestions if it is a screen/cpu bottleneck

This is the correct one by HEXit, people, don't get it wrong!
Holy moly some people are just spreading wrong information all around.

4.4ghz is a bit warm for my liking, my case is not the best, I only have 2 fans plus the hyper evo so I'd prefer to leave it at 4.3.

I tried 1080p and the fps are pretty much the same to be honest.

The gpu load doesn't go over 40% which is weird. I'd like to know what other 7950 users are getting in bf4.

The CPU load is high 80%

I'm gonna try the 14.1 beta drivers. And if this doesn't see a stable 40fps then I don't know

Solution
So seeing as the fps increase in mantle was good, I'm now trying to install 14.2 drivers but it's coming up with a catalyst control centre crash.

Now trying to reinstall. Then I'll download both dx updates. And fiddle again

Ok now running 14.2 beta and doesn't drop below 40 fps online 64 players in mantle maxed out.

That still seems a little low so not sure what or where the bottleneck is on my rig.

Should I try a better card? Save for fx8350? Another 8gb ram? New monitor? Try windows 8.1?

So many complicated solutions, no one asking him a few basic questions.

1. Whats your PSU ?
2. Does your cabinet have ample airflow for cooling ?
3. Do you run your computer on stable voltage and a surge protection ?

These answers can solve the problem.

Well given that Mantle gives you a good increase in FPS it could really indicate a CPU bottleneck. Take a look at this fairly fresh article about Mantle:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/thief-mantle-benchmarks,3773.html

I'm just suprised that the FX-6300 at that clock should be a bottleneck. Also it doesn't really make sense that you would get less FPS with a better card even if there is a bottleneck. I'm suspecting a driver issue.

Mantle is fairly new so if you are experiencing bugs with it (eg screen not centered) I would try google to see if others have same kind of issues with Mantle.

it could be as simple as a clean install of drivers as well, previously says deleted drivers but if not done in safe mode with proper tool can cause issue due to remnants

dl and install http://www.guru3d.com/files_details/display_driver_uninstaller_download.html
power down
power up into safe mode
uninstall graphic drivers new and old using tool
power down
power up into windows
go to nvidias site to dl drivers

also for bf4 verify your cores arent parked could be your issue as well

"You must open resource monitor(Start>accessories>system tools>resource monitor or task manager>performance>resource monitor). Click on the cpu tab and you should see all your cores on the right side. If the core is parked you should see 'parked' ,eg 'Core 1 - Parked', beside you core name. If you don't see any 'parked' means none of your cores are parked. "

Since running mantle and the new 14.3 drivers I've just been enjoying the bf4 as it's maxed out and doesn't drop much below 40fps 64players online, I reckon I'm averaging 60+ fps, directx is lower but I'm running windows 7 so think maybe it's just a utilisation issue.

With regards to my psu I have a evo labs Cronus 650w which is only a few months only. Stable voltage? I do have a overclock but the fps in direct x didn't change even when I tried the stock bios settings so I don't think its my o/c or a unstable voltage.

In mantle my gpu usage is 100% with directx it was 40%? I'd like to hear from other 6300 and 7950 owners using windows 7 to really confirm a driver issue.
