Hi guys... I bought a new ssd about two weeks ago .. samsung 840 EVO 250gb
after great reviews I read about it ..
when I bought it it was great and like you see in the comparison chart down there it was great .. the IOPS speeds (random read/write) specifically
but after some time it's degrading .... today I read about the performance restoration tool and I used it but again NOTHING CHANGED .. same sh*tty speeds benchmarks .. it's so annoying and I don't know what to do now !! PLEASE help me
* note: I updated the bios and all drivers are perfect (iobit driver booster)

I don't want to make you feel bad or anything but i think samsung did some fu*kup with this series so they made that tool it worked for some people but i didn't for me so i am confused ... though I hope your ssd won't have any problems ..

I wouldn't call that a disaster, 47k and 38k IOPS's are more than you will EVER need. Check if there are any firmware updates for you drive.
Also SSD's wear, in the beginning they benchmark the best, however after usage the speeds will drop to a "steady state".

TL;DR it looks fine.

not sure what iobit driver booster is. But did you properly set up the drive in Magician and/or Windows? Magician makes it easier, but I would provision the drive 10% then run the performance optimization and windows optimization.

For myself my EVO has not diminished in performance at all and I bought it around a year ago, but I really only have my steam library on it and a few other applications, I have no experience with an EVO as a boot drive if that's what you're doing.

When a ssd is new, it is filled with empty nand blocks.
That makes any writes a snap since the nand block needs only to be written.
After the device has been fully populated and writes have occurred to all the nand blocks, a write will need a read/rewrite cycle.

One thing to check is if trim is enabled.

for me it's a disaster because I can't just afford to throw money away for some company fu**ed up manufacturing issues .. i just bought 2 weeks ago for God sake !!!! it's a known problem for this series .. unfortunately i didn't know about before i bought it .. thanks for you reply anyway

i am using magician that's in the snapshot in the post up there.. iobit driver booster i meant all drivers in my pc are up to date and works properly.. and yes i use my ssd as the primary boot driver and some programs

i didn't get what you just said but yes TRIM is enabled .. positive

Any new EVO will have the latest firmware update.
Run the AS SSD benchmark.
Check to see if the iastora shows in green. That is when your os drive is properly aligned on a 4k boundary.

What kind of read or write access times do you get?
That is what really counts for ssd performance.

I recommend that you open a case with Samsung immediately. It's interesting how your random read/writes have fallen to half the performance that the drive is rated for. It's almost as if the SSD was physically relocated from a system that supports SATA 3 to one that supports only SATA 2, but then you would probably see the sequential stats fall by half as well. Samsung technical support will probably try to make you run a slew of troubleshooting utilities but see if you can push them to replace the drive. Ideally it would be great if they would give you the newer Samsung 850 EVO, which just came out. The reduction in your drive's performance is completely unacceptable.

I also have owned the Samsung 840 EVO 500 GB for about two months and have written Total Bytes of 2.50 TB. I believe that the warranty supports either 75 TB or 150 TB of total written bytes; can't remember which.

For the record, I've filled 291 GB of it's 454 GB of free space and I've experienced no problems with performance slow down. There is something clearly wrong with your drive and it's not normal. I have this as my system's only drive and I run three virtualized ESXi servers off it, plus several VMs.

system specs:

Lenovo X230 with I7 processor
16 GB RAM
Samsung 840 EVO 500 GB drive.
FYI: I'm upgrading this week to 850 EVO 500 GB drive.

Yours does seem to be lacking in the IOPS dept.

The only thing I've done on this is update the firmware. I've not run the Magician optimization yet.

Numbers seem fine to me, remember the advertised IOPS always state 'Up to' which means peak. Chances are you will not always get the advertised speed but it should still be plenty fast. I would be worried if you can perceive an actual decrease in speed, I personally wouldn't be sweating it though.

thanks for the reply it's the best answer i've got till now ... is there a support for samsung ssd ? or just samsung support in general?

what's the programm you used?

You can live chat with them on the website I believe, then further your case through their support email. If your drive is faulty they will replace it, Samsung is a company that strives for a good reputation.

Want to know something funny... I haven't run the performance benchmark on my system for over a month. Of course I just run it and now notice that my sequential read is way off spec: It's 242 MB/s instead of the 544 MB/s that I was receiving in the past. I don't know the precise support number, but I will search for it now. I'll let you know as soon as I find one. I'm embarrassed that I didn't notice the performance hit that my system has recently undergone but I have to be honest. I suspect that it's a bum design, but I'll let you know what Samsung says, if I can reach them.

*** Update ***

Samsung 888 987 4357 option 1 4 5 1

I'm on hold with Samsung as of 5:37 pm EST. I'm attempting to call in my own drive. I'll let you know how it goes when I'm done, but I recommend that you hop on the phone with them now, since I don't know how late their support hours are. I've provided the options to dial to get to their SSD division above.

it's kind of funny and sad too of course .. so i think all samsung SSDs had this hit .. but if it's normal why did they make this tool ( Performance Restoration Software ) on their website and why didn't it work for me like they said it would I am really confused about this ..

i will try their email support .. and thanks man if you have any update on this you can post here .. actually i don't want to replace it i don't want to go through the backup thing again!! i hope they have some solution

thank you i will try to call or email them now .. i will post here any updates
***update*** i called them on skype it's seagate man !! lol
that's the right number 1-800-(726-7864)

Ok i just finished a call with them .. they told me to run the performance restoration tool again and see what happens .. if nothing changed they will replace it for me ..
