I am going to get either a gtx280 or 9800gx2, I looked in many places and they cost around the same price and I looked at thier power and I see both do extremly well in crysis benchmarks. I can figure out which one is more powerful. Well, which one is worth buying? ANy help please? Dont reccommed to buy the cheaper one (9800gx2), recommend by its power and quality in gaming :)

Specs?
The GTX280 is, I think better at higher resoloutions (16x10 and over), and particularly with AA enabled because of its larger memory.
If you play at lower resoloutions the GX2 tends to be better because its limited (2x512Mb) memory is less of a restriction.
Both use a lot of juice and produce a lot of heat and the GX2 is famous for running hot.
On balance, the GTX280 would get my money but also look at the new GTX275: It is only a fraction slower than the GTX280, runs cooler and burns less power.

I did research but, uncfan...they are very similar and do very good in benchmarks, thats why i did not know which advantage one has over the other.
For the guy who asked my specs, I am getting a new system in like 1-2 weeks so it will be:
Processor: Intel Core i7 something something not sure yet which one
RAM: 6gb
FSB: 1333-1600mhz
64bit system
vista
PSU: 800watt
I play at 1680x1050 resolution so yeah!
I dont really care about how hot it runs cause i am good with cooling, I know what to do to keep hardware cool.

This is the only site that seems to directly compare them both:

With a new i7 rig I would say the GX2 would be a waste, it is barely faster overall than a GTX280 and adding another will simply choke the system: Quad SLI still scales apallingly.
Without a doubt the GTX280 is the better soloution of the two for an i7 system.
But the GTX275 is superior in my view to both, if you can find one for the same as the cards you are considering I would say get that instead.

no I am not getting SLI anyway, i just want 1 powerful videocard, SLI is a still unstable and unperfected technology to which I am not risking to use until the future where it will be polished up. I just need to know which one is worth getting so yeah :), so far pretty much everyone is going for the gtx280 so, more opinions please....

Sounds like you just answered your own question then. A 9800GX2 is one card, but it has 2 GPUs on it. In other words, it's SLI in one card, and it comes with all the problems and drawbacks that SLI has.

A gtx 280 will be less headache and more consistent with its performance.

yeah and with it being an SLI card, games not supporting it wont be a good idea. i'd say the gtx 280 would be your best bet. also, i know you dont want SLI but it would be nice to possibly extend ur pc's life in the future by adding a second 280 which will be cheaper then too. ultimately, its ur decision though

Oh, my GX2 did what I wanted, even at 1980x1200. Just don't try to add AA with that, and the card will still be a top contender. If your willing to forgo AA, the GX2 would be a decent option if you can find one at $180 or so. Its getting on in years though, and would recommend either a 275 or 285 over it at this point.

Well I am getting an SLI motherboard anyway, so I can always add one card, and i am definately not getting ati 4890, i just don't like ATI :) I personally think nvidia is ahead in graphics, i wont take time to explain justification so don't ask why. Also thanks to the guy who mentioned that the gx2 has all drawbacks of SLI, this probably means i am getting one of the gtx200s. Thanks for the help, any other advice would be helpful. Thank you

honestly i dont think thats a good thing to do. research all cards, dont decide by brand unless you have to because of SLI or something. no, i'm not starting a fanboy fight, i'm totally against anything like that, its just, i got ripped off because i went with nvidia because i thought they were better in the budget range. not really 😀

Thats a good point, but my knowlegde in the ati cards compared to nvidia cards is like 1 to 1000000. I dont know anything about ati and it will take to long to learn now. I am on the other hand familiar with how nvidia organizes product lines, the technology they use, how to manage the cards, overclocking, and many other things, thats why i go with nvidia. I was just stumped about those two specific cards i mentioned earlier in the board, becuase they seemed quite similar, but people convinced me that the 280 was better.

right.... i said that if he had to (well should) go for nvidia because of sli thats totally understandable. if i had a sli board i would get a nvidia card just so if that thing can't handle it, i can get second card

....i believe you need one application too control fan speed and overclock....and you can google for benchmarks which explains the whole card line up and naming...

DAMN that is some hard research....there is no excuse for wasting cash and not looking at the better deal/card that may be out there....simply put it you are a fanboy minus the boasting if you don't google your info...its not hard and its not rocket science....if you don't think that spending an hour or two researching is worth it on a 100-250$ by all means be narrowminded and on your merry way...

And i like how you say "i think nvidia is ahead in graphics and i won't take the time to justify it so don't ask"....because you can't....you have no idea of ATI cards i mean you said it yourself...which puts you in even more relation to fanboyism....baseless spouting....

Does ahead in graphics count as having the best card ie the 295? is that what you mean? does that make a companys product good or the best too buy? i would hope your not that blinded by stupidity....not everyone has 500$ to graze every graphics card from each company ati/nvidia and have all of the cards as options...each card has its set market and use...

4850 and 4770 vs the 9800gtx+ and 250 GTS 100-150$ aimed at 1280x1024 high performance

The 9600gt and i believe the 4670 battle it out as well...under 100$ aimed at 1024x768 high performance and 1280x1024 slightly behind performance

The 4870 vs the 260gtx...the 4890 vs i believe the 280 maybe? 150-250$ 16xx/1xxx high performance and slightly behind performance on 19xx/1xxx

And atis X2 cards vs nvidias X2 cards...more than they are worth...utter waste...

Unless nvidia happens to have the best price vs performance ratio in all of the above markets in my book that isn't the best company...but there doesn't have to be an ahead company in these markets...an ahead company could of course just be my actual hardware design...which doesn't equate to much and the same goes for drivers etc...so im taking ahead in the graphics as a budget esk thing...

Of course none of my card for this resolution etc are entirely accurate but they are close...neither ATI or Nvidia are the best...

Rewindlabs: Okay.....first of all researching a completely new video card company and technology is not an extra hour okay...its many many hours and maybe unlike you, i dont have that kind of time on my hands, becuase as much as it may seem to be a lie, i really do have a life and i dont live inside my computer case lol. can you believe it...i actually have other things to do. Also, i wont get ATI anyway, i am getting SLI motherboard. Also, i am buying nvidia becuase thier amazing gtx295 dominates, if you had read the board carefully and not jumped right in and commeted, you would have known i am not even getting a gtx295, so why would i even care about it, i am getting a gtx280, far inferior and cheaper to the gtx295, but still more powerful then what i have right now. And i am not a fanboy, my first card i ever bought was an nvidia, all the nvidia cards i have ever had were reliable, well priced, and lasted well, so why not stick with it. I just said the line "I think nvidia is ahead" becuase i knew it would piss of people like you who REALLY ARE FANBOYS! So basically your entire arguement was entirely against you :) anyway i dont plan to use this board as an arguement so you might as well not post anything related to argueing, only post advice cause i wont reply to it becuase like i said...i dont have those many many extra hours of free time.

I have two nvidia cards that i love dearly...my next card may be an ati card....it will only depend on price vs performance...not ati nor nvidias name...both of my current cards where chosen due to deals that ati couldn't compete with price wise....yes the 4770 and 4850/4870 are great contenders to the cards i have but for the deal i got from my retailed i went with nvidia...

The GTX 295 was mentioned due to it being the most powerful card out but its over priced and not worth it thus nvidia being ahead in graphics design on the bases that it has the most powerful card would mean nothing and its pointless etc...i could care less what exact card your buying and yes i read the thread and i saw and can see what you are buying my example above has nothing to do with it......

And no it does not take many hours...it would seem you believe you understand nvidia cards very well..there isn't much to even research on between ati and nvidia...unless you are mentally slow it shouldn't take you more than an hour to fully understand the petty differences between ati and nvidia's design and naming..

:sarcastic: Im not here to argue....although i do like to see how much you can bring back to the table...ohh and look someone else who says the have a life...oh lord *claps* your mommy must be soo proud
