Blame it on my teenage years. I even like 'Old Roger' - ever come
across it? We used to say it was 70% rocket fuel and 30% earwax. An
aquired taste 🙂

....often at gunpoint.

I've drunken most beers with 'Old' in their names (or 'Owd' in some
cases), although I try to normally stay on those below 7% :)

My complaint about John Smiths was the opposite of taste, though...
it's the beer equivalent of weak lager, surely? I used to live near a
JS pub in Leeds, and *everyone* walked the extra half-mile to a Tetleys
pub unless they were a) teetotal, b) lager-drinkers or c) over 70. It's
a foul, weak, over-fizzy beer that only passes my lips at music
festivals when the other options are foul, weak, over-fizzy lagers.

Now, Old Peculiar, though... ahhhhh :)

Yep. Not going to argue with you - wouldn't buy it in a pub. Drink it
at home only. Used to love visiting the good CAMRA pubs (we've a few
around here) but nowadays folk tend to come around the house instead
(had 8 over tonight and the last one left at 3am hence the late post
while I have a cuppa before bed). John Smiths just tends to be one of
the better ones out of a can and accepted by all.

My favoured drinks like Ruddles County, Abbot and Speckled Hen are just
not 'home' drinks unfortunately :-(

What is wrong with this newsgroup, all you do is talk about drink. You
have lives, wives and family. Sort out your drink problems and get back
on the road to Presbyterianism.

F**king alco's!

Too much difference for me between what comes in the can/bottle and what

But.... errrmm....

/me is confused...

so.... you'd rather drink something out of a *can* that you admit
tastes awful, rather than drink something good out of a *bottle*
because it's not *quite* as good as the stuff you get in the pub?

Err, OK. And you say people still come round to spend the evening at
your place? It must be the conversation...

Lol. The conversation is good but 'I'm' the old ale fan - my mates hate
it with a passion. They drink Banks or Smiths and therefore we all tend
to stock that. Out of the two I prefer Smiths so that's what I drink.
It's not awful - just wouldnt buy it in a pub cos there's usually a
better option.

I could stock Speckled Hen just for me of course but I really dont like
that out of the bottle. (Havent seen that in a can - is it available?).

Of course a recommendation of a canned beer that has kept it's flavour
would be appreciated...

Pass. I've never drunk a canned beer that doesn't taste more of 'can'
than 'beer'.

What's your objection to glass as a container? It doesn't taint the
liquid, is completely recyclable and allows you to see the drink before
you open it. We've always got 'variety' packs of different beers in the
cupboard here, and most of them are *better* than the stuff from some
of my locals....

Just a personal thing. Only beer I ever liked from a bottle was
Newcastle Brown Ale when I was a whelp. Actually I'll have to try that
again someday - must be nearly 20yrs....
