"But don't think for a second that we don't see WoW as both a great game AND
Blizzard as serious competition.
Personally. I'm glad they are out there. They keep us honest. They keep us
focused and they force us to play with our 'A' game. They've certainly
opened some eyes in our company to styles of gameplay that are different
than we would have come up with inside SOE. I hope they're also opening up
the eyes of other MMO developers that the 'old school' probably won't cut it
any more. I'm glad that we went in the direction we did with EQ II because
had we stuck with making an even "harder core" game, I think bad things
would have happened. We need to be about larger scale mass-entertainment.
because that's what online gaming is slowly becoming. Our games just need to
be fun. and easy to get into."

I interpret that as: "We're going to keep dumbing it down until any idiot
can play and succeed just by putting time in. Sigil better take note because
'old school' ironman MMOG's are out! Roll on the corporate mass market, the
Hollywood of MMOG's!"

Cheers,
James

Not necessarily, EQ1 still has a pretty large subscriber base (yeah I've
heard all the doomsayers out there saying it's going to be a ghostland
'soon' but I think it still has legs). I think Sigil will draw pretty
heavily from them and from the people like me who liked EQ up until the
most recent guild uber alles mentality they went for. And WoW isn't all
it's cracked up to be. I didn't last the free month and am back to EQ2
after seeing for myself the problems: overcrowding (not so big a problem),
lag (problem), some CTDs (big problem), consolish gameplay (big problem -
and why they should do ok). I know for sure they'll get a month out of me
and if Brad can do the same thing as in 99 I may stay for years (again).

*rolls his eyes* Lovely how "We're making it so you don't have to be
an uber powergamer to get anywhere worthwhile" translates to "dumbing
it down for the idiots" to some people. Meanwhile, the rest of the
sane world appreciates it.

EQ1 was never exactly a hard game to play. I played an enchanter, which was
perhaps one of the most challenging clases, but that doesnt even compare to
the skill you need to compete in a FPS or starcraft.

Id rate eq1 as 95% grind and 5% skill, so "succeeding just by putting time
in" is pretty much what eq1 has always been, and probably ever will be. WOW
is in the same category too.

If anythig , his message seems to suggest that success will be made more
available to those who *cant* put in heaps of time. ie the casual player. In
any case, I think talk about developing eq1 is a bit moot.

Well, you <are> pretty much comparing apples to oranges. It also takes
more skill to drive in the Indianapolis 500, too, and it's just about
as relevant.

I, for one, am really hoping that Sigil does go with something more like
the old EQ. I will certainly check it out when it does actually release.

Actually, many of the changes to EQ are ones that were desired by the uber
powergamers...

I agree. I'm more of a casual gamer, and the two things I like
the most are how you get 2x exp if you are rested, and how your
debt goes away while you are offline.

Yeah, I think they did a pretty decent job shooting for that middle ground
between hard core and casual requirements. Aside from very few notable
points, I've been impressed.

I think you're getting me confused for an uberguilder Dark.

I don't want a game where you have to be level 70 with 500k worth of
gear to "get anywhere worthwhile", but I think they went WAY too far with
the maps and teleportation. I also think nowhere near enough money got spent
on AI with each new expansion, in fact they seem to be using the same AI as
Verant pulled out of their asses in 1999.

Lastly, I think there are more ways of getting people to see the good
side of a game in their first hour of play than "making it easier".

Just my epinion :)

cheers,
James

I couldn't agree more, and I'm not even one of the hardcore veterans. The
consensus seems to be that "easier" equals "more enjoyable" these days.
