I think this is a non-issue, as it is assumed that people who, at the very least, are less knowledgeable, and at worse, are less intelligent, would use a default product. Duh?

Power users have to use different web browsers for different applications. Opera is great for mobile internet (data compression and useability). Firefox has more extensions. Chrome is faster and is my primary browser on a netbook. Safari is there, just in case all my other browsers get malwared to death. And good ole' IE is still there when the page just won't render right any other way...

That takes a lot of knowledge and time. Skill as much as intelligence goes into this usage model.

[citation][nom]techguy378[/nom]There's a new study that says if you don't rely on Google for everything (email, browser, docs, etc) then you have a very, very low IQ.[/citation]

i chose to rely on different providers... and i do not consider that dumb but the opposite, why put all your eggs in one basket...

[citation][nom]Wolfram23[/nom]That's pretty funny, although I find it hard to believe that the most intelligent people don't use the best browser =P[/citation]
Even intelligent people are subject to Pavlovian Conditioning...

AptiQuant said that it surveyed 101,326 individuals who were given online IQ tests.

Really? An online IQ test and they think this means something. You cannot give a true IQ test online as half of the test is motoric. This is complete rubbish.

People who score highly on iq tests not only search for alternatives, but recommend the best alternatives to others.

Firefox and Chrome are the best supported alternative browsers on the internet, so a person of high intelligence can recommend them to friends, family, and co-workers without needing to provide support as well.

[citation][nom]saidge[/nom]oh, and iq tests utilize time as a key factor, so the googling answers point is moot.[/citation]
So, one's IQ does down as they age and their reaction time decreases? I would have thought that IQ was independent of reaction times for this very reason...

Age is also a factor on IQ tests. And the idea that high IQ = Smart is incorrect. To my understanding, an IQ test tests a persons capacity to comprehend and apply logic and reason to a problem. This is thought to indicate a persons intelligence, and has little to do with their knowledge or education.

GreenSpoon is 100% correct.
This "study" is irrelevant. Anyone that had any knowledge/connection to a real IQ test knows already that this type of testing is very complex and can not be administered via a brief questionnaire online. There is a whole training involved in how to administer a IQ test, and it takes a lot more to get it right. You guys should stick to what you know already and stop venturing in uncharted (for you) territory. Otherwise, you might fail your own "test"...
Obviously this was written only to start a browser flame war (mine is bigger than yours type of thing) and has nothing to do with reality. An objective benchmark article would have been much better, if not too much to ask from a site like this.

Education teaches us to look at situations differently, and how to apply logic to certain problems. You can totally change the way your brain works on a problem with the right education; education is definitely a factor in overall intelligence.

If Microsoft has something that can be used instead of 3rd party software I take that route. Why? Because when you format your computer is easier to recover if you just used all microsoft stuff anyways...

The biggest reason is...
In all my years as a computer technician I have found that the more programs you have installed the more likely you are to have software conflicts and operating system issues. 3rd party programmers tend not to be reserved when it comes to making major changes to your computer. All too often these changes include things they shouldn't change. These programs take up space on your hard drive and clog your registry. I am a computer technician and doing what I do has taught me to be a minimalist when it comes to installing computer programs.

I know winamp is better...
PowerDVD is better
and Chrome is better...
..but the windows programs get the jobs done without much noticable difference plus it saves hard drive space and doesn't clutter up my OS with registry entries and whatever other junk gets installed with X program.

Lastly I think you all should know.
Because of a genetic condition I have that could effect my IQ I have been officially tested (Using a book and the person that sits infront of you and times you and everything. Not some fake online test.)
My IQ is: 126

I just can' t handle the level of smattering in the posts.

1) The original idea of IQ test does not include motor skills, if u found an IQ test that includes a motor skills or reflexes then it is not a strictly IQ test but a more general neurodevelopmental test

2) Speed does matter in some IQ test designs (actually several), it becomes less relevant in very high IQ test settings

3) The ideal IQ test should correlate poorly with education. After all being smart and being cultivated is related but: There are smart people with high IQs and poor education (look at the drug lords in the movies), and being educated is the perfect veil for some idiots to obscure their lack of brain function. For this reason verbal tests (correlate high with education) become more scarce in IQ tests. And NO u cannot google the questions in a PROPER IQ test.

4) For some people saying that an IQ test is not possible over the Internet that is false. A proper IQ test can be performed that gives a good estimate, in a large sample +-10 is an affordable error

5) Some people made some very good points that show high IQ. For example they deducted from the data that Apple users have in average higher IQ (based on Camino and Safari) - an observation not mentioned in the discription, and also provided u with a very plausible explanation: smarter -> better job -> can afford Apple -> amaze chicks/guys. Another guy said also sth smart: high IQ -> gets bored easily -> trys new things. Another guy also said high IQ -> optimizes browser preference based on task.

For those who say that this study is invalid are probably wrong. For those that feel imbeciles having a PC and using IE bear in mind that u may have a high IQ but u are swimming in a pool of idiots. For those smirking for using Camino or Opera or have a Mac, bear in mind that u might be an idiot swimming in a pool of smart people.

Finally this is an observational correlation study. It doesn't explain why, it just gives u the data, the interpretation is in the eye of the beholder.

Thank u for your patience and time.

What's the average IQ of someone who makes a bar chart on a 550x350 JPEG image? I had to save it and blow up just to read.

[citation][nom]whysobluepandabear[/nom]They could've just as easily put that "Extra" money they make into the bank, and actually accrue interest - besides the obvious fact of them just having more money in general to spend. I also don't believe that entire $300 gig. First, Dell has beyond frequent coupons - most of the time amounting to hundreds of dollars off the overall price. Second, like 4 days ago we had this similar debate when comparing an Macbook Pro to Alienware - mind you, Alienware itself is overpriced, but it's really a testament when Apple manages to outdo Alienware by a significant margin. It's like, Alienware is bad enough, but Apple is just horrendous. Anyways, I was able to build a laptop that had more RAM, bigger (and quality) screen, faster HD, or even a SSD on the alternative config and a WAY better GPU. The chassis was as always, nice and had a lot of perks with that aside. So really, I don't see what Apple has going for it. Pretentious, cult-like consumers who buy anything Apple releases. You could release iDogShit and the Apple fans would buy it. They'd even pay premium price for it too![/citation]

Well, I'd have to say "Pot calling Kettle" with the "pretentious" part and exchange "cult" for "childish internet bullies" and basically what you said could easily fit a PC elitist. Just because you don't see what Apple has going for it, doesn't mean the value isn't there.. You could just be blind to it. Or refuse to because of ego-based issues, penny-pinching issues, or even valid ethical and moral issues. To be honest, any issue is valid.. It is your money you spend, and as long as you feel you got your moneys worth, then your straight. Telling other people they are idiots for spending their way, living their way, or believing their way.. Now that's pretentious, in my opinion.

I really, really just try to view it all as a normal vs name-brand issue.(the whole PC vs Apple thing.) I could buy a lambo for $$$$, or buy something far, far cheaper, and customize the hell out of the thing(to the point that it is better, infact) for cheaper.. But.. A lambo, is still a mother f'in lambo. The same is true with any brand name item. I can make a copy of a Coach purse, and put a couple tweaks in to make the purse more comfortable, or more useful.. For FAR cheaper.. But a Coach purse, is still a Coach purse. Or a much larger diamond engagement ring, that to the naked eye LOOKS identical, to a Tiffany & Co.(T&Co) ring.. And chances are, while your lady will love either.. Chances are.. She will actually swoon more if you pull out a T&Co ring, than a Kay Jewelers one.. Because a T&Co ring, is a T&Co ring. Brand, whether you like it or not, understand it or not, or whatever other reasons your mind wants to dwell on.. Has enormous value.. Sometimes making something far more expensive than the sum of its parts. You just don't understand, obviously. Try and leave it at that. Like an adult.

Now, as for the money, absolutely, they could put it into the bank, or invest to make more money... But I think it's reasonable to assume that when you make damn good money, that your gonna want to buy damn good things. Now yes, you could be all like "Man, I want the absolute best bang for my buck, even if it takes me 3 months to do all the company research, parts research, upcoming products timelines(so you don't buy something that will be outdated in 2 days, etc) and whatever else and what not... And take pride in your super awesome best fiscal purchase evar.. OR.. Just maybe you actually have more going on in your life than some stupid computer parts shopping, and don't care for customization, or whatever other nonsense anyone here can think of, and they just want 3 things: A Sleek, sexy looking computer that can do what they want (which for most people.. isn't much at all, lol.)with the absolute minimum amount of learning curve to get it to do everything they want(which, as before..not much, lol) And when money isn't much of a concern, or when you just *like* name brands, or you just plain and simply like Apple products... Apple products win. The numbers show that. Hell.. I'd love to see a Name Brand vs Normal Brand study done, with Apple placed in the name brand group, and PC in the reg group.. I bet the numbers would be scarily close to other products. But thats just my opinion.

[citation][nom]whysobluepandabear[/nom]Um, yeah actually. Some girl sits there and tells you about how intelligent she thinks she is with technology. You discover she uses IE and hasn't tried anything else. BAM, you now know she's not technically lying, but is under the impression/illusion that she is somehow smart, when in realty she is a dingbat. This can be used with any person, regardless of gender. It's like people who pretend to know a lot about cars, but when you discover they use some off-wall, known junk brand, you really know right then and there it's a person who doesn't know what they're talking about.[/citation]

Or perhaps she is smart (compared to the average) and you are just actually alot smarter than her? I mean.. Einstein was a fuckin' brilliant man.. but would that give him the right to walk around and think everyone else was a bunch of dipshits? No. Because Einstein had class. You, and your example, does not. Try rating people on who they are, not who you are. While I secretly love/hate battling you in Apple/PC articles(;P), your stance with this example honestly offended me here. 🙁

Spot on, I think. :) Thanks for the input. 😀

[citation][nom]Humans think[/nom]I just can' t handle the level of smattering in the posts.1) The original idea of IQ test does not include motor skills, if u found an IQ test that includes a motor skills or reflexes then it is not a strictly IQ test but a more general neurodevelopmental test[/citation]

This is not correct. The most accepted IQ test right now is the Wechsler Tests. They are all half verbal and half motoric. If you are trying to say that your ability to manipulate objects has nothing to do with your IQ you are smoking something. This does not however mean that just because you can manipulate objects you will have a high IQ. These tests take a LOT of time to develop.

2) Speed does matter in some IQ test designs (actually several), it becomes less relevant in very high IQ test settings

This is true

3) The ideal IQ test should correlate poorly with education. After all being smart and being cultivated is related but: There are smart people with high IQs and poor education (look at the drug lords in the movies), and being educated is the perfect veil for some idiots to obscure their lack of brain function. For this reason verbal tests (correlate high with education) become more scarce in IQ tests. And NO u cannot google the questions in a PROPER IQ test.

Verbal tests are going away? Not that I have seen. I will agree that education does not equal IQ. Not at all, but those that have higher IQ usually are 'smarter'. This is not to say there are not people out there that have very high IQ's that are uneducated. All IQ shows is Intelligence, which is generally accepted to mean potential.

4) For some people saying that an IQ test is not possible over the Internet that is false. A proper IQ test can be performed that gives a good estimate, in a large sample +-10 is an affordable error

+-10 is the margin of error with the most used IQ test (again, Wechsler). You cannot perform an IQ test accurately online. There are to many uncontrolled variables taking it online. When you take an IQ test administered by a professional there is a VERY strict protocol they must follow in order for the test to retain its validity. An IQ test online may have face validity, but I highly doubt you will find one that has Content or Predictive validity.

That is one of the primary ways people with higher than average IQ are identified. They do not perform well in school because they are bored but the teacher knows they can do what is being taught. Also, willingness to try new things is a common trait amongst people with higher IQ's.

You are right it is just a correlational study, and as such does not prove causation, however the correlation they are stating exists has been tested in an improper way.

To save space, I'm not going to quote all of that.

Pretentiousness towards Apple steams from the consumer belief that their product is superior. Looks are one thing; they're opinion based and everyone has a different style that catches their eye. However, when you start pretending that your laptop/computer is untouchable in hardware and software - like the Mac is Gods gift to the world; that's when I have a problem. Under that, they also use Apple as a status symbol.

Think about that for a second. Honestly, walk into an Apple store, and try telling me that entire front is NOT about status. It reeks of attention seekers.

I'm thinking I should endorse "Beatles" computers. Just build them and market them as the sheik, classy computer - you know, for the artistic, and brilliant consumer - one whom must stand out from the crowd and LET IT BE KNOWN THAT THIS IS SPARTA! ....carried away.

They're buying Apple mostly for the brand and status symbol. That is pretentious. See, a Lambo carries a status symbol surely. However, a Lambo out matches any car that isn't in it's relative price range. In materials and performance.

I see this as a Lamborghini (Apple) vs Ferrari (PC) debate. If the Lambo is significantly priced higher than the Ferrari, but carries no benefits, and actually, may posses LESS benefits - why in the world would you pay MORE to have LESS?

You do the same thing. Maybe not with hardware, but with something. Probably at the grocery store with generic vs brand name. There's something you do in your life where you believe it is silly to pay more for the same thing, or even pay more for something inferior. What it is, I don't know - I just know EVERYONE does it at some level. Surely you question why someone would ever pay MORE for something that's the same or worse.

On the second part: knockoffs LOOK the same. They're not the same quality and craftsmanship. If they were, they'd just be branded as their own brand and sold competitively. There are obvious reasons to buy a Coach purse - the quality and guarantee they have is quite good. Buy some knock off and you'll see shoddy seams and overall poor build. Probably fake-leather, or bad quality real leather.

The PC however is not comparable to a knockoff. The PC is Gucci and Apple is Coach. So you're STILL paying MORE for less.

Overall, I'm trying to say people treat Apple like it is some premium and superior brand, when in fact, it's not. It's hyped and misrepresented - which is EXACTLY what Apple wants. They WANT misinformed idiots who believe their product is superior and better; that way they can charge the morons more money, and the morons feel the price is justified - again, when IT'S NOT.

Apple raises and nurtures retards. How do we expect this society to progress and collectively learn how this technology works, if all Apple does is provide a product that does the work for them? I said this once, and I'll say it again - Apple's moto is: "Nah, don't go to college, pay us instead, and we'll do all the work for you. You'll then of course remain an idiot fresh out of High School, but don't worry...you can keep paying us and never worry about it".

These people need to learn how to do this pathetically simple stuff. Apple nurturing people at a 3rd grade level HARDLY helps society. They need to raise the bar. This actually happens too much in life - mostly in the US; catering to idiots. If we just had higher expectations and actually PUSHED people to be the best they could....oh how much better this world would be. Instead we do this entire "No child left behind" shit - keep everyone at idiot status.

To the last part: Like I said, I'm not a big sympathizer for people who are largely less intelligent then myself. Unless it's some handicap, I do NOT sympathize for people who are lazy and DON'T EVEN TRY. If they put just a LITTLE effort into it, they could be just as good, or better than me. Instead they choose to be idiots. CHOOSE.

I swear to God, some people aspire to be NOTHING. They are perfectly o.k. with being tards. It's not acceptable - and please, don't give me that whole "Not everyone can be as smart or as good as you". That isn't the point - I'm not saying I'm some genius, but I at least TRY, and put EFFORT into being up to my potential. There's a HUGE difference in that statement. I actually WORK for it.

I guess I'm just not one of these people who believes that everyone is a winner, and there are no losers - there is no wrong, everyone is right. No, bullshit. Some people are WRONG. Some people are LOSERS. Telling people that they're always winners no matter what and that they're never wrong, turns them into idiots who never TRY. Why try when you're always accepted?

I'm about 100% sure I'm going to have some pissed off people replying to this - people get defensive and offended. Have you ever called a dumb person dumb? They freak the hell out - because they know it's true. They should instead TRY to be smarter and put some more effort. It should be a driving force, not something they're offended over.

Maybe that's just how I think - instead of being a whiner, I instead look for ways to better myself. Seems to be a rare type of mindset these days.

[citation][nom]STravis[/nom]What a stupid, waste of money study - but I guess it makes the Opera guys feel good about something.[/citation]
No, not really. This actually tells quite a bit about the type of consumer using Opera and the like.

Opera is now more informed on the kind of person using their browser, and can now suit their needs more.

It could come down to a new change Opera is debating on releasing, but isn't sure if the user base would be able to grasp and navigate the change - oh wait, looks to be like a lot of Opera users are half-way intelligent, and obviously know more advanced computer skills, so pushing a once debatable idea may not be such a hard decision after all.

Now doing that with IE, we clearly see most of the users are complete dumb asses. So that change may not float very well with the technically challenged individuals.

So yeah, not exactly useless.

Not correct either. The Wechsler test has a very small portion of it dedicated to motor skills, and even then only the most recent version used it (like within the last few years). Before that motor skills were not tested for nearly a century. Older tests used other methods to get similar results.

Higher IQ lends itself to being "smarter" because you are more apt at logically thinking through a solution. A lower IQ relies purely on what they learned, and deviation from that makes it more difficult. Higher IQ adapts and logically applies what they have learned, which results in doing better for education. According to theory at least.

Online IQ tests make me feel good, I like thinking that I have an IQ of 150.

It's shocking (or not so shocking, I guess). it seems like around 80% of those that aren't very good with computers have never heard of Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Opera. They think Internet Explorer IS the ONLY PORTAL to Internet.

Safari!? Hipsters... high IQs!? What?

But in all seriousness, this is probably one of the most ridiculous things I've seen that indicates IQ.

Who takes those online IQ tests? I don't, but maybe that means I'm automatically dumb.

I think mindset mostly determines your perceived intelligence, though raw computational ability does play a part in it.
