A New Study Suggests Internet Explorer is for Dummies

The article says that "It appears that, on average, Opera users are near-geniuses", but the bar graph points to an IQ level of 120 for Opera users.

As I understand, 120 is, and I link and quote from Wikipedia as per Wechsler ratings/scores (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IQ_reference_chart), "Bright normal". And as we approach 130, "very superior intelligence". But the "near-geniuses" (genii) are supposed to have an IQ of 140-160.

So my point is that
a) This article is somewhat misleading in claiming Opera users have Newtonian IQ
b) Where does this leave IE users? Simian intelligence?
According to Wikipedia, they are "normal". So not dummies, strictly speaking, but compared to the rest of the world, yeah. You'd have to be a dummy or fall under the age brackets of 40 to be still using IE. Just my opinion.

[citation][nom]mobrocket[/nom]i chose to rely on different providers... and i do not consider that dumb but the opposite, why put all your eggs in one basket...[/citation]

that means pity Warren Buffet.he said to put all your eggs in one basket

Lol, I'm an Opera user. But still, ppl that use IE are people who are not computer techs. They are more like an average users. And IE9 is alot improved, like alot from previous versions of browser that were bad.

Score of people using 2-4 different browsers is counted how? By adding, multiplying, subtracting, percentage averaging??? According to my IQ tests showing over 140 and therefore belonging to the part of people not exactly addressed by this study I can tell that this study is inaccurate at best. Fun and humorous, but really misleading and a bit terrifying.

If this was done with online IQ tests, many of them actually score based on the speed with which as person "answers" the question, as well as the accuracy of the answer. It would not surprise me if the results were skewed by the browser itself. IE8 and IE9 are huge. FF4 is big and kind of buggy, depending on addons. So, perhaps a better test of IQ is required.

This result is read wrongly. The study shows that IE are more user friendly and therefore do not need people to be brainy to use...

[citation][nom]GreenSpoon[/nom]Really? An online IQ test and they think this means something. You cannot give a true IQ test online as half of the test is motoric. This is complete rubbish.[/citation]
I agree, however, even if those tests are not Mensa material, the fact that over 100K+ people took the same tests does help to see the distribution of intelligence among those people. The IQ result might be wrong, but the percentages are valid.

Nonetheless, correlation doesn't imply causation. It's a funny bit, but it's not to be taken seriously.

Last IQ test I took in high school was on our mainframe. They had us take it mostly just for fun, I don't do well at the shapes, but numbers and word problems I love. The 130 I got dismayed me, so I reprogrammed our version of the Kobayashi Maru and scored a 250. Serves then right for leaving the files unprotected :)

Anyone that didn't know Opera was for smart people, and Internet Explorer is for morons probably is using Internet Explorer, and proves this study.

More to the point, I've also noticed that the real low-grade computer users stick to IE because it's there, and they don't have minds (or a browser, despite the name) that want to explore, and this simplicity of thought keeps them on IE. You also have an example here of a person that uses IE because it's easier to recover from. This is also a low IQ example of where someone needs to recover often, and then struggles with it so chooses the shortest route.

Opera just works better. It's more intuitive, and easier to use. To the more intellectually active and astute, it's the browser of choice.

Not that everyone using Opera is super bright, or everyone using Firefox, Safari or Chrome are stupid, but as an overall trend, I can see it. If you use certain apps that don't like Opera, or another browser, this could make you choose another. Some has to do with that, but some has to do with smarter people having different preferences.

All people who have written something or just thinked why score look like this... are more intelligent than this study.

Whatever the browser you use! :)

Guys...it's a hoax...seriously Tom's, at least make an EFFORT to verify these kinds of things: http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2011/08/internet-explorer-users-have-lower-iqs-study-is-a-hoax-here-are-some-of-the-red-flags/

Guess I'm dumb...default or not, I use IE by choice. I still use *GASP* DOS on occasion and Win2K (It's the system that still interfaces with my GPIB test equipment). Question: Every self-centered a$$hoe out there: Do you option out your vehicle with every after-market doo-dad out there, or do you just buy it and use the default engine? The default steering wheel? How about the default seats? Yew awr we-todd-did...right?

Seriously, the fact that journalists reported this as if it were true tells us a bit about *their* IQs. :)

Turns out this story was faked. But I would call folks who stick with IE one of three things:
1:)Lazy
2:)Technically challenged
3:)Don't care

It's bogus. Besides - if more than 50% of the people use IE, how could they average in the low end of the bell curve? Looks like a lot of you were sucked in... probably hoping it was true.

That is only true if the test actually measures intelligence. Like I said earlier, it may have face validity, but does it have content/criterion or predictive validity. If it does not have either of the last two then it is not measuring intelligence which is what they are claiming. And, if it is not really measuring intelligence then the whole study is bunk, regardless of how many people were tested. For example, if I have a test that measures your ability to hear and all of the questions are written, it does not matter how many people took it, the results are wrong.

Wow...sounds like you watched Donnie Darko too many times...Love or Hate, you only get one choice...sounds like you hate the world.

[citation][nom]dekker5000[/nom]Hate to burst everyone's bubbles, but the story was a hoaxhttp://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-14389430[/citatioNICE!!! Good reference...thanks. I don't know if I feel more stupid for arguing in my defense (as an IE user) or if it was funnier to read the posts from to the holier (smarter) than thou audience. I am surprised Tom's carried this story before checking it out.
