I received this board last week, and I have yet to hear any post messages
from the post reporter. I know the speaker is connected correctly because I
can hear the post ok "beep". I do have it enabled in the bios. Any ideas?

I was also surprised to find the included Nforce2 drivers way outdated (v2.x
or something).

The POST message reporter can be turned on or off in BIOS. Press DEL
at bootup to edit the BIOS settings. Was this is a used board that
came with a hard-drive with Windows already installed? The drivers are
part of Windows, not part of the motherboard itself. Download the
latest drivers from nVidia at:
http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

As I recall, you need speakers connected to the dound port...if the
board has sound then the text comes out the sound port...at least
that's how mine works!

So the post reporter goes through the Nvidia audio? What good is that? For
instance, upon installing a new motherboard, the last thing on my list is
connecting the 5.1 speakers! However, that is not a big concern except for
the fact that, there are no beep codes for errors! Now, this is a big
concern, as I have an Audigy2 card for sound output and do not use the
Nvidia option.

Voice POST is hard wired to the Lineout connector on the back of
the computer. It has nothing to do with the Nvidia audio or
your Audigy. If you wish to hear the Voice POST messages, simply
connect a pair of amplified speaker to Lineout on the back of the
computer, and make sure that any necessary settings are enabled
in the BIOS. (The output is mono and only present on one channel of
Lineout, probably the left channel.)

Voice POST is made by a separate Winbond chip. It doesn't even need
the processor or any plugin component for that matter. The Voice
POST will work with the motherboard by itself, a PSU, and a power switch
to turn the board on.

The output of the Voice POST is capacitively coupled into the
Lineout signal. It should have a signal level similar to a Lineout
signal.

It doesn't matter how many sound cards you plug in - the Voice
POST can only come out one place - Lineout.

This is the datasheet I downloaded more than a year ago. It is
possible the part number is different now. The most likely connection
method is on page 19 - a 1uF capacitor:

So, I repeat, "what good is that?" I have to carry around a pair of
amplified speakers to diagnose post errors? Or worse, now I have to have two
sets of speakers, one set plugged into spdif digital audio, and one set for
line out post reporter?

Never the less, I did not purchase this board for that feature, although,
now I see it as purely marketing hype. However, why in the world would Asus
remove the beep codes?

No, this is a "new" board, even though its a revision 1.1. I'm a little
miffed about that, but that's another thread.

The Nvidia drivers are the ones that were included on the driver cd that
came with the motherboard. They were dated 2001.

The drivers on the CD are almost always out of date. They are probably
the official "Asus" ones which are probably pretty old anyhow. Go to
the nVidia site and download the Platform/nForce drivers, then select
Unified Drivers for your OS. They'll be the most current ones.

Just a follow up... the way I'd do it is to load your OS. Once that's
done, then load the platform drivers. Since they're pretty large, you
may need to burn them to a CD first. If you can't do that, then use
the drivers on the Asus CD. Once your board functions well enough to
download the current drivers, go ahead and do that and just install
them right over the older ones.

Thanks Sam, I already took care of that. Like I said, I was surprised to see
drivers included that failed to contain anything for the Ultra 400 memory
controller (which is what the deluxe stands for (400mhz fsb)).

I wonder if you got the correct disk for that motherboard. It only
came out within the last year or so (hopefully someone will remember
when that was). So the drivers on the disk shouldn't be much older
than 2003. Did it contain the drivers for the Marvell megabit network
port?

Yes, it had all the drivers needed, just not updated ones for Nvidia.

CD revision is 68.02

Even on the Asus website, the newest platform drivers they have listed
are dated: 2003/10/29. The disk I got with my A7n8x-E Deluxe is also
labeled as rev. 68.02. I guess I'd already downloaded the newest
nVidia drivers so when I swapped my MB out and did the Windows Repair
installation, I just used the newer ones and ignored the stuff on the
disk.
