Hi

I've had one of these ASUS A7N8X-VM/400 m/b for about 6 months now with 512Mb of quality memory and AMD2600 cpu using the onboard nvidia video.

I have a triple boot system of W98, Windows 2000 and XP. On all operating systems I get random crashes and reboots. I also get very thin lines on the display (which is generally a video problem).

If I turn off hardware accel the m/c is rock solid in all operating systems. I'm convinced it's a motherboard problem but the supplied says he needs to return it to maker to trouble shoot and I don't want to loose my only m/c for more than 4 weeks.

I'm on the point of buying a AGP video card to fix the problem. Anyone else had the same problem and got an alternative fix.

What speed are you running your ram at?
The onboard graphics does not support DDR400, so that may be your problem. If you have PC3200, and set to by SPD, change it to manual, and 166.

I have got Kingmax 3200 but it is running at 330MHz (according to AIDA). The m/b automatically slows it down if using onboard video. Other tests I've run also indicate it is running at the correct speed.

It's an AMI BIOS (cr*p) with very little control over anything. I've rotated the mem and changed from 128m to 256 onboard video memory with no change to problem.

I'm now looking at the P/S as it's only a 250W and thats a min for this config, but my voltage monitoring of the p/s (software) show no appreciable change from when h/w accel turned off. But still 90% certain it's a m/b problem.

Well. Now that you mention that you have a small PSU, then that may just be the problem as well... Voltages dont have to drop to max out the PSU (at least with some of them in my experence). If this PSU is no-name brand, then your probably starving your system of power.

EDIT: I highly recomend that agp videocard (with a PSU upgrade)
