Yes, they are backward compatible - even compatible with ATA33!

ATA66 cables have 80wires in them, vs the 40wires in ATA33 cables. The ATA66 have appearance with more rigged edges.

yeah ..though some drives may requre a manufacturers disk utility to set it to run at that lower interface mode.

Keep in mind tho, instead of torurting yourself, you can always pickup an ATA100 controller card. Yer PCI bus can more than handle the bandwidth needed, and youll get some improvement over your MB controllers if they are 66 or 33.

I wouldn't exactly call it "torture" if he already has an ATA66 compatible motherboard. The noticeable difference between ATA66 and ATA100 isn't very big.

OK so i was being melodramatic hehe, but an ATA100 controller card you can get for around 50 bucks, i think worth it if your getting a new ATA100 HD

The ATA100 controler will only show an improvment in the burst traffic of the interface, after the cache on the drive is empty then it's the HDA that determins the transfer rate, not the interface. Save your money and get the fastest HDD you can afford, the card is a waste if you have an ATA66 controler on board.
