Scenario:

2 Windows 2000 SP4 Domain Controllerss: DC1 and DC2

Problem:

When attempting to launch any tool which queries AD on DC1, the operation
fails. The various results include:

AD Users and Computers: "Active Directory failure with code '0x80040e37'"
AD Domains and Trusts: "The configuration information describing this
enterprise is not available. An error occurred (error code 0x80040e37)

This problem only occurrs on DC1 (not DC2). Other than not being able to
manage AD from DC1, there are (apparently) no other negative effects. Clients
continue to be authenticated by both DC's without problem.

Troubleshooting:

Rebooting does not solve the problem.
The problem appears to be releated to AD "client" interfaces rather than
server processes or a corrupt database.
The only critical events in the event log relate to the following DCDIAG
report:

DCDIAG /v provides the following suspicious information:

--------------
Starting test: frssysvol
* The File Replication Service Event log test
The SYSVOL has been shared, and the AD is no longer
prevented from starting by the File Replication Service.
There are errors after the SYSVOL has been shared.
The SYSVOL can prevent the AD from starting.
An Warning Event occured. EventID: 0x800034C4
Time Generated: 06/25/2005 10:03:06
Event String: The File Replication Service is having trouble

enabling replication from DC2 to

DC1 for c:\winnt\sysvol\domain using the

DNS name DC2.company.com. FRS will

keep retrying.

Following are some of the reasons you would see

this warning.

[1] FRS can not correctly resolve the DNS name

DC2.company.com from this computer.

[2] FRS is not running on

DC2.company.com.

[3] The topology information in the Active

Directory for this replica has not yet replicated

to all the Domain Controllers.

This event log message will appear once per

connection, After the problem is fixed you will

see another event log message indicating that the

connection has been established.
An Warning Event occured. EventID: 0x800034C5
Time Generated: 06/25/2005 11:25:45
Event String: The File Replication Service has enabled

replication from DC2 to DC1 for

c:\winnt\sysvol\domain after repeated retries.

As this post has not received a response from an MS rep within 2 business
days, I am re-porting it seperately.
