This gives them time, probably through the end of the year or so, before they will need to raise yet more cash. By then it should be clear whether a K10 generated turnaround is in the cards.

AMD has dodged the current crisis and has been given enough time to have a chance to execute with Barcelona. That's all they could have possibly hoped for in their current situation. A buyout, unlikely to begin with, is even more unlikely than before given its higher debt levels and soon to be negative net tangible assets. Noone is going to come save AMD, it must execute. If Barcelona is not all that, then it really will be the end for AMD.

I'm not sure how long the present dodge will last, but yes, a whole lot depends on how K10 and the R600 perform. And by K10, I should include the whole lineup of Agena, Barcelona, and Kuma. I sure wish they would at least toss out some cpu engineering samples for review. I think it would help on the speculation front.

The only company I currently see that might which might rescue AMD with a buyout is IBM, as it has been a working partner for awhile. But as you say, if Barcelona/K10 doesn't perform well, or the R600 for that matter, then the end of AMD is probably not that far off.

AMAT merger(crosses fingers)

Yes, perhaps with IBM?

I dont think its in IBM's interest.

It's much harder to make a case for AMAT than it is for IBM. Either way, I strongly believe it is a moot point now.
