Hi, my current build is here: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/pJgzkJ

I'm looking to upgrade it in some way, will be primarily looking at playing anything new that comes out as well as some existing games (CP2077, League of Legends (idk why but I struggle with having a constant 144fps with my current build in LoL) all at 1080p but will also be using it for development (programming).

Will be buying in the UK and in the next week or so as long as I can get something worthwhile. Budget wise, Id like to spend between 500-700 pounds, ideally lower but don't mind paying more if it'll make a noticeable difference

From what I had a look so far, the CPU, GPU and motherboard are probably the three main things that could be upgraded as I feel like the rest of the system is OK but open to any suggestions. Primarily looking at having low temps and low noise, as in the more demanding games my pc currently can get a bit loud

Thanks

I would do something like this.

The 7800XT is about 30% faster than the 6750XT at 1440p ultra.

Your motherboard will support the 5000 series with BIOS updates.

Edit: Your current PSU should be able to run these GPUs so getting a new PSU is not required. Just note that if you decide to go beyond an AMD 7800XT or nVidia 4070 you will want a new PSU as you would be pushing it pretty hard.

Thanks this looks pretty good actually, I'd likely go for the 6750 XT as I'm not too bothered about 1440p unless there's some good deal on the 7800 XT. If going down the 6750 XT route, would you recommend putting the money in some other part or is the rest of the system fine as it is? I was considering getting a new motherboard as the USB 3.0 header on my current one is broken and I have no front panel pretty much but it's probably not worth dishing out that much just to get a working header

You could get a new motherboard, but that is a lot of changing things around for little gain. About the best thing that would come from going with something like the B550 Tomahawk MAX or B550 Gaming Plus is the addition of a 2nd M.2 slot. Therefore you could get another NVMe drive to have as the gaming drive and leave the old one as the OS drive.

Other than that the system is still pretty decent in my opinion. You have 16GB RAM which is standard now. You could upgrade that to a 2x16GB DDR4-3600 kit for that would be 65 Quid for the Corsair LPX. However, if you aren't doing things that need that much RAM there is not rush at the moment.

Since you are going to upgrade the CPU, make sure to get a vial of thermal paste so you can put that onto the new CPU right away.

As far as the 7800xt, if you want a deal, you might look and see if you can find a 6800xt in stock. From what I’ve read and seen online, the 6800xt pretty much is right there with a 7800xt in performance. Once they refine and tweak things more maybe that that changes? But it might be a great deal if you find one substantially cheaper.

@Lucky_SLS Do you think the 6800XT would be worth it for 1080p or would it overkill? I game at 1080p and not really planning on going to 1440p anyway so not sure if it's worth dishing out the extra for 6800XT/7800XT, although I've looked at reviews and the 6800XT seems on par with the 7800XT, same as what @ohio_buckeye says

As for prices for these, the cheapest 6750XT is currently £333.64 (
XFX Speedster QICK 319 Core) and the cheaptest 6800XT is £462.00(
XFX Speedster MERC 319 CORE) so it is a pretty substantial price difference. Only thing I've read is that the 6800XT has some bad coil whine, not sure how true this is though. I've got some coil whine on my current card and it is quite annoying so not sure if I'd want it to be any louder than it is already

Regarding VRAM, 12gb would be more than enough for 1080p.

Regarding performance, you can always look at individual game performance and decide.

Coil whine again differes from model to model. it happens in high current load cases.

I will link this for your reference:

bear in mind that the results are without FSR tech for AMD. And most games today support and strongly suggests you to use it.

I’ll tell you myself. 6800xt is overkill for 1080p period. However if you ever did want to make the jump to 1440p, those panels are getting cheaper all the time. I will tell you this, going to 1440p was visually one of the best upgrades I did on my gaming pc. You start seeing levels of detail where you are like wow I can’t believe I didn’t make the jump long ago.

Also, although the 6800xt may be overkill now for 1080p and is a solid 1440p card, if you are keeping this build a long time and never move from 1080p, you might find that as games become more advanced and have more features, that in maybe 2-4 years that the 6800xt perhaps isn’t as good at 1440p on new games at that time, but might still be a monster card for 1080p high refresh rates.

In other words the 6800xt might be overbuying for 1080p right now, but I say if you’ve got the cash, and considering the prices you can get them for especially after the shortages in the last few years, if the price is reasonable get the best card you can afford and you are set for a while.
