I personally think that one major thing needs to happen in order for PC gaming to really come back into style: The RTS genre must come back in force. The way I view it, the Golden Age of PC gaming was dominated by games like StarCraft, Warcraft, Red Alert, Age of Empires, and Homeworld. I think this really changed when the original X-Box and Halo were released. The massive popularity of Halo represented a shift from PC RTS games to console based shooters. Since then, there have been a few failed attempts to bring RTS to consoles, which has left the shooter king. This, coupled with the lack of a truly spectacular PC RTS release since the aforementioned Golden Age, has prevented the PC from being the primary gaming platform and has instead seemingly restricted the PC to an MMO platform. Say what you will about the constant delaying of StarCraft 2 (I know I say quite a bit 😛), but that one game is currently the best hope for PC gamers (I could go into how I think Blizzard is killing a killer opportunity by splitting SC2 into 3 separate games in order to make more money, but that is a completely different animal...).

Another thing that should be considered is that when PC gaming reigned supreme, the only way to play games online was on the PC. When consoles gained this ability, it sort of sucker-punched the PC, even though I still think online gaming is far and away better on the PC.

[citation][nom]rooket[/nom]If we all remember history, we don't need an expensive video card. First thing is the price on cards eventually comes down to the sub $150 range to run these games very decently. And the second thing I recall is that Crysis was somewhat a dull game. Sure the first few levels were fun to toy with but that's about as deep as it goes. Once it got all into this killing aliens nonsense, it got rather bland. Hmm this game in the title is all about going after aliens. This is one I can easily skip, too bland for my taste. I'd be playing COD MW2 which is one they should have done a lot more work on. It is sad that as far as I can gather from my gameplay experience so far that COD MW2 is too very similar in graphics to a console which is not that overly impressive. These consoles have been out for years and the technology inside them for graphic capabilities is outdated. The next generation of consoles will catch up to all the DX11 stuff, kinda making this article a little pointless.[/citation]

Crysis being dull is subjective. It is a non-linear game which gives you the option of playing the commando or silent assassin. Most gamers need to have their hand held in order to get through a game, that is why the Call of Duty series is so popular. It is very linear and does not give a lot of tactical options. Here is your objective, do it this way. I liked that in Crysis.

AvP is not just about killing aliens...you are the Alien, or Predator, or Marine. I remember the original AvP game, playing the Alien was great. AvP2 they ramped up the Predator's weaponry, that was some fun.

I do not think consoles will get DX11. There is still 5 more years of shelf life for the PS3 and 360 in the manufacturer's eyes. In five years we should see at least DX11 come and if not DX12 as well. More than likely, DX12 will be on the tail end if its life cycle, it will be put in consoles and less than a year later a new DX will hit PCs. Consoles will never "catch up." That is the nature of systems that cannot be upgraded. You get what you get, and six months down the road when something new comes out and makes console hardware obsolete, you are stuck with it.

[citation][nom]tester24[/nom]Hopefully developers get on the same page as ID software, Atari, Rebellion by making their game with the high resolution high quality graphics for PC then build the console versions with graphics/resolutions they can handle at a good frame rate.[/citation]

ID is jumping on the console bandwagon as well. No dedicates servers for Rage, my friend is thinking of leaving ID. Almost everything in development from ID is going to be console based, ported to PC. They are even forcing testers to use console controlers.

Anyone play GTA4 on the PC and PS3? I think it's plainly obvious that the consoles were surpased years ago. Look at any game on my 106" screen from my PS3 and my PC, there is simply no contest.

[citation][nom]tacoslave[/nom]were the hell is the photorealism that DX11 promised probably gonna have to wait for Crysis 2...[/citation]
Crysis makers already said the next Crysis will be console minded first then ported to the PC. Their reason was the evil game pirates, the typical excuse they have been using all along. So actually the Crysis one engine will be the most powerful still.

I cant wait till the day when companies stop focusing on graphics and start worrying about gameplay.

So many awesome looking games that are lacking everywhere else.

[citation][nom]tacoslave[/nom]am i the only one who wasnt impressed with the screenshots?[/citation]

Aside from the character models the background and scenery reminded me of ES3: Morrowind. Not so impressive considering that game was GotY 7 years ago.

To be fair, when you have to fork over at least $800-$1000 every time you turn around for a gaming rig to keep good frame rates going, then build it and set it all up,,, OS,Drivers, updates, patches, and the list goes on. for $200 the graphics on the console start looking pretty good.

if a game is made for the console and ported to the pc, then it'll be great looking but clunky controls. resident evil for instance is very aweful to control for the pc.

btw, does dx 1x even matter now? most games are still dx9 compatible and it'll allow you to run them on windows xp pc's.

What's funny is that you say this:
"Sure, those with fancy rigs will get higher quality textures and resolutions, but the overall experience is similar."
Then the article says that this is what the new AvP promises (essentially), and claims it's something crazy.
Let's face it, a hotter graphics card may add better graphics, etc, but that's not the only reason some of us play PC games. Sometimes, the AI is better; you can have more enemies on screen, the pathing is better, patching and mods are better, you can have more control over the hosting.

Graphics are NOT the biggest reason to be a PC gamer. Sure, frosting on the cake, but if the AvP crew really want to be a game changer and showcase the power of the PC...

- Modding out of the box
- utilize those cores, and make the AI more complicated/or just better on the PC platform
- utilize those physics, and make the physics matter. Sure, destructible environments are pretty, but make the physics have an ingame impact.
- Scale the number of enemies on screen, or number of people in multiplayer. e.g. a console might limit multiplayer to 16v16, but why not have 64x64 (or in this case, 5v3v1, or 30v15v5, Human/Alien/Predator) matches, that again showcase the discrepancy in processing power.

In other words: That's awesome you can use Directx11. But that's not going to make the game PLAY different.

Ah sweet, AVP!! I still own 1 and 2 of that game. Best FPS I've ever played in terms of balance between the three races and the human campaign still sends chills down my spine. While i never found multi-play to be that exciting, single play has great replay value. The Wall crawling but squishy alien offered great strategy

This is actually part of the reason I bought a console. I built a PC not even two years ago on newegg for a little more than a launch-priced PS3, and I could handle Crysis smoothly on medium (1024x768). Then I bought a new monitor which bumped up my resolution to 1680x1050, and my PC struggled with Crysis. So I bought the new at the time 3870 and a vga cooler and I could play it a little better than what I could on my old monitor. But I still wanted more, so later waited for prices to drop on the 1 gig 4870 Vapor X card from Sapphire, and put in a Q6700 plus a new Zalman CPU cooler + exhaust fan and am now able to max it out (barring any AA/AF). So, I actually spent the price of what a launch PS3 cost again, this time on upgrades alone, and already they're starting to become outdated as far as PC hardware is concerned. Sure it's still better than what's in the consoles but the difference to me isn't big enough. And to make it big enough it will pretty much mean a LGA 1366 motherboard, Core i7 and 5800 series ATI card would be in order pretty soon. And this is all the while PC gaming advancements are supposedly being held back by consoles.

In short, you really have to have the time to invest and cash to burn to be a serious PC gamer. I'd like to have my PC last at least 4 years, maybe with an upgrade half way and serve me well, and not have to be upgrade-bound every time I can't max a game out, which is part of the point of PC gaming. I think this is also, along with piracy and numerous hardware/OS configs, why an increasing number of game developers see more value in focusing on consoles, which aren't always changing so damn fast.

Basically it's about developing new technologies on PC and implementing them on consoles, where they actually have a chance to fully mature and be enjoyed by enough people to fund the next generation.

I also believe Crysis is a far more sophisticated game with a far more sophisticated engine. Developers have not been able to fully utilize this engine for other games the way crytech and ea did for Crysis. Its better than the dunia engine as well. I know the programming is harder to work with but whichever the reason, Crysis will always be a benchmark game that ppl will always remember down the road. Current beastlike systems cannot even MAX out Crysis to its MAXIMUM capabilities yet with FULL AA and AF. Thats how advanced the game was and even though the programming was hard to work with according to the articles Ive been reading, we have yet to see even 80FPS and above with every single setting maxed out in the highest resolution possible.

Now many PC fans and tweakers consider this a feat. High sales and record numbers are great for the COD series and that too is a feat, but its pop cola like coca cola compared to a fine-aged wine.

Long time AOE fan here. Never cared for the duke nukem style games. Last time I enjoyed a console game was when playing defender on my atari 2600.

Whether you all want to believe it or not, PC gaming is all but gone. It's not necessarily about graphics, even the DX9 versions of almost any game beat the crap out of its 360/ps3 counterpart. PC gaming is gone because the developers/publishers are gone. Who the hell is left loyal? Crytek is gone, Activision has COMPLETELY corrupted Blizzard, for that matter Activision is on the warpath against us, Epic is done with us, id is done with us, and surprise surprise, the day Valve has a decent console hit they start making us wait for the 360 version to patch first and put out their first yearly sequel. We've basically got EA and Ubisoft left, and Assassin's Creed is still coming out months later for PC's and EA loves their securom.

Whether you like it or not, we're on the way out and there's no denying it for a second.

Stand by for more angst:

[citation][nom]eddieroolz[/nom]The next generation of consoles may deliver better stuff, but PC's still are the king of the hill. You just can't beat the flexibility of a PC, it's well worth the $750 you spend to be able to play almost every title off the shelf. But the next gen consoles will be more powerful, assuming that the Wii didn't catastrophically damage the perception of "more power = good". At present, Wii's killed any notion that more graphics is better with their controls that are just nothing more than a gimmick and a joke. Who knows, they'll probably rehash the GameCube/Wii hardware yet again which would, you guessed it, provide no incentive for MS/Sony to ramp up their horsepower.[/citation]

What? You honestly believe that graphics matter? Console gaming is dead too, because of people like you. What I'm getting at is that the "hardcore" games on consoles like GTA, Far Cry 2, Gears, Halo; they're all basically PC games. Console game design is now PC game design, but without any of the advantages. See, I actually like decent games, not necessarily "pretty" ones, so Muramasa to someone like me is a Godsend. Funny enough, the Wii doesn't get many great games, but when it does they're exactly what console gaming used to be. No More Heroes and Madworld anyone?

For that matter, anyone remember THE MOST hardcore game of the last generation, Viewtiful Joe? Gamecube exclusive at first. Who pulled Resident Evil's ass out of the rotting coffin it was in? Oh wait, Gamecube!

All I'm saying is I wish my FPS's and open-worlders were still on the PC where they belonged, and consoles were still...consoles.

The better they get at making games, the less often they need to make more of them. Look at WoW. Someday they will make one single online game that will last a couple decades...with upgrades and expansions naturally.

I have a decent 8800 GTS card that runs DX10. My computer still runs good and I see no reason to upgrade it anytime soon. If I got DX11, I would have to change my mobo for PCI-e 2.0 support, my RAM (currently I got DDR2 and DDR3 is out now) and get a new video card. it's just not worth it. If a game is backward compatible for DX10, then great. Otherwise, there's plenty of other games for me to play until my current computer breaks.

i agree i have good gaming pc and all my xbox games look 5x as good on my pc and kids at school think its the other way around due to their store bought HP with a 8 bit video card. people think that gaming pc's is TOO much compared to a 400 dollar console. its pretty easy to build a simple dual core pc with nice grafix for like 500 and still make it look soo much better than console. plus to full enjoy HD on consloe ull need a HD TV which will cost ya at least another 400. i hope they actually MAKE dx 11 games not dx 9 for consoles and just put dx 11 all over the case to make it seem sooo good. crysis was like one of the few actual games that took full advantage of dx 10. xbox 360 or ps3 would catch on fire trying to play crysis on all very high

I am pretty sure PCs have always been superior in technology to consoles. It is just the nature of them. The whole point of a console is to release an affordable system for casual players.
