AMD 9/8/7 Series: New Drivers vs Old?

Okay... so, anyone who has older AMD hardware probably knows the struggles of the "one size fits all" approach that they have taken towards driver revisions. Your Radeon HD no longer can play a lot of games now and some games if you use older drivers that actually did work won't even let you open them. I switched to an Nvidia GTX 970, fortunately.

So, I am wondering if, just like their legacy GPU drivers, performance is a factoring case on these new Ryzen+9+8+7 series chipset drivers? If you take note of last driver that shows to be specific to the 9xx series it is Crimson AND it is a whopping 110MB as compared to the 65.4 MB newest release... also even older drivers get into the range of 40MB.

So... has anyone messed with upgrading from the older drivers and to these one size fits all drivers and noticed issues?
