AMD A64 3200+ Operating Tempretures

Anyone knows how hot the a64 3200+ newcastle runs? mine runs at 50 degrees C, and at full load it goes up to 65 degrees C. Is it too hot?

Any CPU cooler suggestions to go with it? Thinking of upgrading the cooler...

That seems way too hot.
My 2800+ idles around 37c and underload goes to about 40c. My mobo has a feature which will change the fan speed of the hsf with temp, so that's why my idle and load are so close. If my cpu is idle the fan speed will drop to 3000-3500rpms. Underload it will push up to 4000rpms.(this is will out cool n quiet)
You may want to reattach the hsf, make sure you use thermal paste. Check your fan speeds. Try enabling cool n quiet. Check your case airflow. MAke sure the heatsink has full contact with the die.
If you are getting these temps from bios, try using a 3rd party program such as everest to check your temps. My temps in bios are way off from the real temps.

what Darko said, plus update your BIOS. Maybe the readings are just off. You shouldn't need another HSF, but your temps ought to be considerably lower (not that your temperatures are dangerous or anything, but a 3200+ just doesn't run that hot normally).

Actually it is the Bios, I had the exact same problem and actually posted here about it. Use the MSI Live Update to update your bios, make sure to back up your old bios on a floppy in case sh*t hits the fan. Once you have the new bios for the motherboard the temp should drop by 20-30. Prior to the update my temp was reading 68 and after it (and I enabled cool and quiet) it was reading 33 at idle.

I updated the bios before i monitored my temps, and i use the MSI core center to monitor my CPU temperature. Is the core center accurate?

Its been accurate for me, thats how I have been keeping track. Look up what bios version you have for me please.

Yeah its 1.30. And one more thing to add. When i forst got my Mobo it was a MSI K8T Neo Fis2r, and mounted the cpu on it. The mobo didn't work, so i went back to the hardware store i got it from, and changed to another k8t neo. but it so happens that the second mobo didnt work too, *USB ports are dead* and i finally changed to the k8n plat.

But, when i removed the cpu and cooler from the FIRST K8T and transferred to the second one, i applied some cheap thermal goop and reattached it to the second mobo.

Now, when i removed the cpu and cooler from the SECOND K8T and transferred to the K8N Neo Plat. , i simply reattached the cooler to the cpu without applying thermal goop again, cause there is still some left over from the second reattachment (the cheap thermal goop is still spread out over the cpu face). Cause i thought that it will be ok, beacause the time interval between the 2nd k8t to the new k8n was like 20mins.

Do i need to clean it completely (cpu face and the cooler)? and reapply some good thermal goop?

I am getting a new cooler, and can i use back the CPU bracket from the original stock cooler? (means the black bracket attached to the mobo, not the aluminuim cooler itself)

Yeah you can use the same bracket, I would reapply the thermal goop and I would get some decent stuff like artic silver, its like a 3 dollar investment and it improves so much. The USB ports on the other motherboard being dead is a common problem. There is a fix for it but it involves messing with the wires, or so I have read.

Matter-of-fact you have to use the same bracket on that motherboard, the bracket and backplate are glued to the board. I have read that people took a blow dryer with a credit card to the motherboard to get the bracket off.

Yeah you should try and find Artic Silver 5.

You can just go to some electronic store and get thermal grease, but it's not as good.

I used Thermaltake, the "Venus 12" model is what I think its called. It does alright, most people would recommend a Zelman product... I think thats how you spell their name.

Just to clear up, the usb problem has to do with conflicting specs. There is one usb wire (called usboc, I believe), that if connected, negates all the usb headers on the mobo. All you have to to is pull one of the wires on the front case connector out (it can be put back in) and the thing works. This is better documented on the MSI forums.

Sorry, I was referencing a prob earlier in this post. The MSI mobos with non-functioning usb ports don't have "dead" usb ports, there's just a problem because some case front usb brackets have one big block connector for their usb ports. Sometimes one of those wires doesn't need to be connected, and if it is, it disables all the usb headers on the board.
