I am trying to find out which is the better computer AMD Athlon™ II 645 Quad-Core Processor vs AMD Phenom II 955 quad core processor . The Athlon has 6GB RAM the phenon has 4GB RAM

the phenom is a bit faster than the athlon, and processors don't have ram, they have cache. the phenom has more cache than the athlon. The phenom requires more power to run than the athlon too. good luck.

The per core "Deneb" beats the per core "Propus" in gaming and multi threaded applications, and if you're going to be mostly gaming get the 975/980 BE it's the only CPU that performs great in gaming compared to I5 2500K and better than any X4/X6 CPU from AMD.

Yes, its understood that OC'ing is a relative aspect depending on each chips capabilities, but 4.0GHz is very commonly hit. Im not sure why you are making as much of a deal about this. Also, for the great common sense factor, a quad core running without Hyper-Threading will see no major performance boosts past the 3.8-4.0 mark anyways. Correct me if im wrong?

can bench happily with my B55 at 4.5 all day long however once tested with prime95 it bsod's after 20 minuites...
That's why it's called unstable.
The B55 sits happy at 4.2ghz for a everyday OC.
It is more than just what cpu you have, i was using a top of the line 790FX motherboard (MSI 790FX-GD70 4-way crossfire-x certified).
PSU and ram also play a good part in a decent and stable OC.
+1 that each board is not the same in OCing, and it's an important factor, but no difference between 4.0 and 4.2 GHz specially in gaming...

Come on, all those "answers" for something easy?

Athlon II X4 645: Non L3 cache plus locked multiplier
Phenom II X4 955: L3 cache plus unlocked multiplier.

What's better? The X4 955 because the L3 cache that gives you better performance in games and average and also can overclocker better.

thank you for the simple answer although I don't understand nonL3 cashe, and L3 cash. I would assume that mean one does not have cashe? This computer is not for a gamer if that makes a difference

I assume from the original post you are looking at 2 ready built PCs and choosing between them if so what are the full specs? Also your use may make a difference to whether and Athlon with more RAM is better than the Phenom with less but generally 4Gb is enough and the Phenom is the better CPU (mainly due to the L3 Cache, the Athlon has only L1 & L2 cache).

That's exactly what I think he was asking. I think everyone completely missed the point. At least that is how the question was worded.
