Do the posters here know that AMD's actually making more profits now then before? Focusing on the mobile segment has been a pure design win for them, and now their going to move further in that direction.

The VAST majority of consumer PC sales are through OEM's not enthusiasts. AMD is simply catering to the low end price range that the OEM's use as their bread and butter.

I love that CEO .

First bulldozer is not a fail its the future , by removing a core component in CPU and making it smaller (2 int and 1fbu) with same performance of last generation that had (2int 2fbu) that is mother f**** smart , the future is APU , and
you cant squeeze cores in the APU unless there small , thats why Bulldozer
1 module will contain 2 cores (debatable ) but the key note:

You will get a not a half bad quad core with not half ass bad GPU , and people that value money and
are not intel douche bags whom pay 200~300 for only CPU .
can make an full fledged 400~ usd computer using apu ,
and also if you shed 25 box you will get silenced PC with cooler master 212 ,
remember you don't have the sound of GPU fan.

Now lets take a look about whom can buy an APU:

ME
Poor folks
Tech Smart Older people for children (its true)
For your wife , mom , grand mother , dad , (anyone that does not understand what is CORE and use IE as
main browser)

Basically APU is win/win , and its competitive now and will always be .

xoxoxox.

It seems a lot of people here missed the Trinity reviews where it shows that the Piledriver cores fix a lot of what was wrong with Bulldozer. It still doesn't catch up to Sandy Bridge, but it's a significant improvement and definitely puts the IPC well above the old Phenom line.

I'm definitely going for a Trinity laptop soon as some decent ones are in the wild.

As for Rory, I think he just chose his words poorly. AMD is not "bowing out". They're still going to work on improving their CPU architecture -- they just aren't putting all their resources into chasing down Intel for a fleeting "performance crown". They're branching out into GPGPU (which will work great with their APUs if they can get the ball rolling on that) and other areas. Which is smart.

[citation][nom]soloburrito[/nom]The CEO's job isn't to make AMD the best, it's to make AMD profitable.[/citation]
well if he has the attitude he has now, he is going to fail and there will be no more AMD. He obviously has no idea what he is doing.I dont care if they dont have the fastest cpu, but something mid range that is good value. Right now they have SFA and can barely compete in the mid-low range.

[citation][nom]neiroatopelcc[/nom]They're fighting a losing war, so why not surrender and save what can be saved. Find a war they can win.[/citation]
they arent going to win by putting all their eggs in some ultra light mobile market that they have SFA experience in and that, quite frankly, isn't that popular. If they cant make an efficient desktop/laptop processor that can mix it with intel's mid-range, then they sure as hell cant make this whole "thin and light" idea efficient. Unless they plan to ditch the x86 chips and work on ARM processors and hope that takes over x86......

RR calls it as he sees it: AMD with limited resources cannot continue to go head-to-toe against the behemoth Intel. Not on all fronts. So he's focusing precious resources on a narrower front. Like Alexander the Great when he went against Darius with his vastly superior forces. Additionally, RR sees a potential threat also from ARM and nVidia if they decide to enter the market. Surely they will start from the bottom up. And the cellar and ground floor are AMD's turf.

[citation][nom]emad_ramlawi[/nom]will anyone upvote my comment or should i create 20 fake account and upvote them like the intel marketing folks.[/citation]
Comments are upvoted when people like your comment because it is contructive or funny, not when it is destructive and especially not by demand. You won't gain much respect this way.

Also, having posts on the 5th page won't help much since most people won't bother reading past the first few.

He's trying to steer the company in a new direction, but his choice of words is terrible. Also it is surprising that somebody in his position seems to be unaware that statements such as “There’s enough processing power on every laptop on the planet today.” are extremely dangerous. Some famous quotes from the history of computers such as "I think there is a world market for maybe five computers." come to mind. I mean does this guy know anything about computers or is he simply a businessman. Anyway.. AMD is not my company, but this guy is definitely not a visionary. And that is sad as I have always felt that AMD takes the long view...

Well he's half right, isn't he.
i5 sandy's will be fine for enthusiasts for the next 5 years, and truthfully speaking the earliest core2 processors amply handle the day to day or ordinary people. (my e8500 and 4870x2 is safe for another year at least)

The real performance requirements are needed on servers, or low power/ just enough processing on mobile devices.

... to paraphrase Steve Jobs quote at a keynote... "... .... go of this notion that for Apple to win, Microsoft has to lose"... so... go of this notion that for AMD to win, intel has to lose... AMD's APU's are wonderful things... why not build on that...?

"There’s enough processing power on every laptop on the planet today." - tell that to the laptop I used the other day that tried to run a 720p movie and the CPU was permanently on 100% and the movie was lagging like hell.

The laptop is almost brand new btw, purchased less than a year ago.

The guy has a point. It's been quite some time, that we didn't really need faster CPUs.

[citation][nom]tofu2go[/nom]How does AMD compete on thin and light when Intel's designs are more efficient and manufactured with manufacturing process superiority?[/citation]
Trinity.
Faster than intel's for average Joe (thanks to GPU).
More than fast enough on CPU side (somewhere between Liano and i5, closer to i5)
Very power efficient.

CHEAPER. Ok? Thanks.

[citation][nom]Pherule[/nom]"There’s enough processing power on every laptop on the planet today." - tell that to the laptop I used the other day that tried to run a 720p movie and the CPU was permanently on 100% and the movie was lagging like hell. The laptop is almost brand new btw, purchased less than a year ago.[/citation]
Could you reveal what CPU it had, oh poorly choosing laptops one?

To the ones saying that enthusiasts represent a minority so it's ok to drop it, you should be aware that it costs roughly the same to make a high end and low end CPU, this cause the effective price of a CPU tends to be the price of the raw materials and both are made of the same silicon, so yup the high end CPU may represent a fraction in percentage but they represent more in terms of profit, also having the most performing CPU will give you bragging rights and chances people will speak more of it than of a "average" CPU.

On a side note I don't know why he says he wanted to stop the war with Intel, when Intel is clearly going everywhere, if its goal was to run away from Intel he should just close the door.

This is smart and sad. smart for AMD in the long run, sad for PC gamers. Are they taking this strategy against nvida? Didnt AMD push intel into the core2? this is sad for PC gamers. Competition is what gave us the awesome hardware to build our rigs. Maybe Cyrix or WinChip will come back :)

[citation][nom]AngryBirdMan[/nom]14nm Haswell. The die shrunk Haswell will be the last great CPU. Intel will end the line along with the i64 stuff. Intel will only make ATOMs from here on out since we are maxed out on CPU usefullness. Who needs a great CPU to play angry birds. AMD is right. People aren't doing enough with their computers these days for any of this stuff to matter. If it can run a web browser, play angry birds, and update facebook, it is all anyone really needs. Long live the ChromeBook![/citation]

People want this all of this on their cell phone. I guess even laptops are in danger.

I honestly don't see the problem , here. basically the guy is saying AMD is gonna focus on what they already been doing even with out having focused on it. I'm Sure AMD's top of the line will still meet needs for gaming pc's and general computer ussage. sure they wont be the best work horse processors ,but if you're an enthusiast gamer on a tight budget I'm sure AMD's chips will still offer a bang for buck value with out directly trying to target intel's line in competition. Which is what i look for asa gamer any way , buying 'the super top super priced equipment really makes no since and as ive otten older i understand it never made sense. by the time you start needing updates to keep gaming , you'd do better to just replace the whole system , so why buy an intel processor for 1000 bucks an intel main board for 250 bucks ect ect , when you can game on something a lot more moderate in price that is a bit easier to replace down the road.

the point i'm driving at , that only teh "ultra": enthusiast shoudl be put off by this news , but then again the ultra enthusiast probably already dropped AMD about 4 years ago. so it doesn't reallya ffect them at this point . as for us budget enthusiast or gamer enthusiast , why should this bother any of you ?? this just means amd will continue to NOT hit our pockets as hard as intel does. which is only a good thing.
