I tried it. Had a lot of stuttering and intermittant lag. I understand my increase was probably nil with an i7-3820 and a twin frozr 7970, but I went straight back to DX.

As mousemonkey post..

Mantle seems helps in cpu bottleneck situation...
This may be a part of why AMD ditching it's FX lines and go to APU.....

I'm more interested to see what Intel will do than Nvidia will moves...

I think MS are the ones to watch as they control the DX API.

Well I think this is a hardware level API..
I doubt amd, nvidia, intel will share some of they tech secret to microsoft that will help development of new directX API..
intel and nvidia can do more since they control their own hardware, i doubt microsoft can do the same... (equal/better)

also I also hate the way microsoft bind new directX to new OS exclusively.... (this can hinder the adoption)

but nvidia can work closely with microsoft and to improve direct x more as just they did with DX11.2.

These demos are excellent highlights of the power of Tiled Resources. By working in collaboration with Microsoft, our NVIDIA team has been able to influence the design of Tiled Resources and deliver a solid driver that taps into the huge NVIDIA installed base. There are over 90 million NVIDIA GPUs capable of supporting Tiled Resources. For developers, that means an enormous, instant installed base for a powerful new feature. I’m really looking forward to seeing how developers take advantage of this newly available capability.

but i agree about locking the latest direct x only to the latest OS. maybe they should make it available down to vista though i don't surprise with the MS decision just like DX10 is exclusive to vista and not available on XP

i have a 6800k and video card 7850 from amd. i cant download 14.1 and i dont know why?

it always says "install source package not found".

The main difference is not direct access, the XB1 after all is running a modified Windows 8 kernel and probably using DirectX 11 as it's API, but rather that there is one specific set of hardware to code for instead of thousands like with PCs. That alone allows for better performance on lesser hardware and does not specifically require direct hardware access.
XB1 API is based heavily off DX (11.2?), and most parts of it are stock DX. But it is a superset of DX, and it does have low-level API functionality - in particular for resource-intensive areas.
So if you want to get snotty then I'll have to take other actions to keep you on topic I guess.
Uh oh class, mod abuse! Stay on Mouse Monkey's talking points or else! :-/

That is still a API that it is calling through and not direct hardware access which is what Mantle touts.

Again the whole purpose of the API was to limit direct hardware access because it caused apps to crash the OS.

We shall see. I still think Mantle is a interesting idea but AMD vs Microsoft..... I see Microsoft winning especially if the XB1 does use DirectX then the majority of games will utilize it vs Mantle unless AMD finds a good reason, like 50% better performance on any CPU, then maybe but OGL tried to take on DirectX and it isn't winning. It has some but DX is the main stay for most games.

Yeah I seriously doubt the mantle will overthrown the DX,

but if we consider the rumor that mantle quite similar with what PS4 use is true, i could imagine that ported game that designed for PS4 will able to use mantle without to much work... This maybe what mantle trying to archive to increase their games library.....

I even think AMD learn from Sony about this mantle.. (They must get something in the PS4 join research/project. and mantle is what they get)
