You could check on higher spec AM3+ (socket) CPU. If this was a prebuilt, make sure that CPU was offered in a higher line spec of your model. Probably won't amount to much perceived increase in performance. I tend to agree with the above that putting an SSD in place of the HDD would do wonders.

What do you mainly use the computer for? If it's mainly web browsing, all it really needs is an SSD. Other than that, an extra 8gb of ram for 16gb total wouldn't hurt.

You could upgrade CPU for the fastest that the board would support.
That would probably be FX-8370. On paper it should be more than 2x faster in multicore loads.

However, these things tend to be expensive, even used, so maybe upgrading whole thing for AM4 socket would be better.

MoBo's start at $40ish, CPUs can be priced less than that, RAM is cheap.
And there are even some decent APU models.

EXample:

MoBo: Biostar B450 for only €42:

CPU - 4core /8Thread Ryzen "Matisse" 3100 for €52:
https://geizhals.eu/amd-ryzen-3-310....html?hloc=at&hloc=de&hloc=eu&hloc=pl&hloc=uk

Cheapest semi-decent APU : AMD Ryzen 5 3400G for €63:
https://geizhals.eu/amd-ryzen-5-340....html?hloc=at&hloc=de&hloc=eu&hloc=pl&hloc=uk

More powerful option from latest gen for AM4 - AMD Ryzen 5 5500GT:
https://geizhals.eu/amd-ryzen-5-550....html?hloc=at&hloc=de&hloc=eu&hloc=pl&hloc=uk

Top of the line APU for AM4 socket Ryzen 5700G:
https://geizhals.eu/amd-ryzen-7-570....html?hloc=at&hloc=de&hloc=eu&hloc=pl&hloc=uk

For such low cost upgrade, I'd go for 3400G for cheapest office/desk option or 5500GT if I needed a bit more of CPU oomph.
Both should be WAY ahead of anything that you have.

But if you plan to use it for decade, you might well go for the best APU you can have - 5700G.

WRT RAM, DDR4 is cheap as chips these days. Get the one that can do 3600MHz. AM4 chips are declared to support 3200MHz, but can get close to 4000MHz and APU systems need bandwidth.

If you are looking for CPUs and plan to either keep an old GPU or get a new one, well, there are plenty of cheap options also. I suppose you'd want to look at latest-gen 5000 line and at least 6-core models:

As others have said the only real upgrades are to things like the 6300, 85xx chips or the 95xx chips but odds are the motherboard won’t support them, you’ll need a new cooler and those chips just aren’t very good or offer much uplift in performance.

The cheapest quick “fix” would be to swap the storage from a HDD to a SSD to make it feel responsive in the OS though programs won’t actually perform better outside of initial loading

Hi all, thanks for the feedback, based on your suggestions it seems like a replacement pc could be the best option.
I kind of expected the answer as it was put together in 2017, nothing lasts forever.
