I would guess that it would use a couple hundred watts most of the time, with full load at perhaps 600-800. That's just a rough guess though.

I agree with cjl there. It would be pretty power hungry and would put out a nice amount of heat.

I knew the admin for the local college here and he had his office in the server room (the college wouldn't give him his own) and only had two machines in there and if the AC went down for his office it would get over 100F easily in a few minutes.

If I wont this thing, I would sell it and build a DT PC or two.

What do you have that would pull 300 at idle? Very few systems idle above 150 or so. Have you actually measured power consumption, or are you just assuming? My i7 + 2x 4870x2 pulls 320 idle (and ~750-800 load), but that's not exactly a common system.

If its your sig system, I doubt it unless you have a old Prescott based P4 system hiden in your home somewhere

Hence why I said I have no idea what I would do with it. You would have no use for it either. :lol: I have a hard time believing anyone here can even manage utilizing a quad core much less a 48 core. Architecture and lots of ram != quad core superiority.

I could utilise it, although I certainly would never buy this much hardware for my purposes. I do rendering for the fun of it, not for work. But I certainly could load up 48 cores with ease.

And yes, anyone can easily load 48 cores. I can load 48 instances of folding@home if you like.

My overclocked GPUs and i7 consume around 500W at full load and idle around 300W. One of my GPUs doesn't idle down so 250-300W could be a fair estimate. Xfire 4870s draw around 230W with the test system.

I just realized he has an E8500 for his rig. I don't think his PC will be consuming as much power as an i7 with GPUs in SLI.

Yeah - I idle at 320 with 5 hard drives (granted, one's an SSD), 6 sticks of 1600MHz RAM, an OC i7, and a pair of 4870x2s. I'd be stunned if anyone with an E8500 would come close to that for idle, unless the GPUs are absolutely nuts.
