AMD official "End Of Life" dates

Thanks for the post, but this has me very worried. I was thinking about a new build with the am2 socket, but if their EOL is at the end of the year, what is the point?

What will be the main AMD socket for the next 2-3 years?

The EOL dates are for 939 and 754 primarily...and a different kind of AM2 will take the place of current AM2. This is kinda silly methinks. Tom's JUST posted an article showing the the benefits of AM2 were insignificant unless you had a higher end Athlon. So they're forcing out what people know and love, and forcing in a socket that really isn't much better, just more expensive. Hmmm...silliness. Glad I'll be grabbing a Conroe in July. 🙂

I guess we can only hope for the day where they will be happy with one socket (or longer life span sockets) and just focus on making faster, low-power processors

Wow your freaking out because AMD is deciding to get rid of it's older lines, and remove some of the more confusing rated processors. I think this is good for them. They can keep up with Opteron Supply and start shipping more high end AM2s

Doesnt anyone realise that AMD is shifting at least short term production to Server cpus?

they lowered prices so they are adjusting the product mix to prop up their ASP's......

less consumer (cheap)
More server(expensive)

this will surely stagnate their consumer market share advances, i only just realised that recently they have no mentioned any targets for consumer level cpus in the way they keep incresing the targeted market share for their server offerings.

If AMD is not careful they will erode their consumer user base, and if intel competes successfully in 1 & 2p servers, they will have their shipment volume growth handicapped. I will assume though that at least they think they know what they are doing, so maybe its a short term conssession till they have greater capacity @ 65nm production.

AMD's AM2 will be the main socket for the next 2-3 years. K8L will be socket AM2.

AMD will be terminating their lower end AM2 Athlons because of the upcoming price drops. That will make faster models more competitive than a slower model for only a few dollars more. For example if you had a choice between an AM2 3400+ for $110 and the AM2 3500+ for $120 which one would you prefer to get?

I thought i read that 2x1MB AM2 (X2 4000+, 4400+, 4800+ ) have already been pulled from the shelves??

Yeah, I remember reading something like that too. But I think I also read that AMD want system builders and retailers not emphasize those models which could imply that there will some of those models available before they decide to kill them off.

It's very likely AMD already has CPUs binned to those models. So they can either trash them or simply sell what they currently have in their inventory.

AM2 doesn't have the benefits it claimed. So to end of life 939 is a bad choice since no one will upgrade to AM2 until they see the gains over Conroe. I think most will stay with 939 wait for the Intel price drop and grab an Intel conroe over the AMD AM2.

The Socket itself is much more friendlier to high frequency than 939 or 754, evidently you're a selective reader if you missed that.
So you'd rather the CPUs stay at 939 with the speed they have now so all you can do is bitch and moan about how Intel is so much faster, gotta think forward dude, things can't stay the way they are just so you can cry about something.
The new AMD platform has so much more to offer for the future than Intel's does.
If you want more speed right now construct your own CPU and stop your whinning.
And if you keep missing the important things in articles have your Mommy read it to you.

WRONG.............it's doing just what they said it would, not what you wish it would.
Another one who's mother should read to since you're missing things.

Regardless, it does make sense... The end of life of socket 939 seems to be a bad choice, since few will upgrade to AM2 until they see performance gains over Conroe. Probably most will stay with 939 and wait for the Intel price drops then grab an Intel conroe over the AMD AM2.

Yer yer i have socket A 2, long live socket A! 😀 My overclocked barton performs well agaisnt presscot pentium 4's  Eat that you conroe lovers...........

While it may seem like a bad move to the consumer, from a business point of view ceasing production of S939 does make sense. AMD has been honest in saying that there will only be neglible performance increases between AM2 and S939 of the same model (i.e. AM2 X2 3800+ vs. the S939 X2 3800+). There is really no need to keep both production lines churning out two different sockets. Might as well shut down the S939 factories and retool them for K8L. Socket AM2 lays the groundworks for the K8L CPU.

If AMD simply withheld socket AM2 until the release of K8L, then that could lead to production problems because that would mean AMD will be releasing a new generation CPU and socket both at the same time. What they are doing now is making the switch to socket AM2 and let it mature to work out any bugs. By the time K8L comes out AMD will not need to worry too much about socket AM2 technical issues because it has been in the market for sometime. Will K8L be supported by current AM2 chipset? I would hope so, otherwise people who buys into AM2 will not be able to upgrade.

Anyway, to lure people over to AM2, AMD is only going to release faster CPUs for this socket. That may not be a powerful draw for people who already have a X2 4800+ or FX-60. But people who have older or slower CPUs may just switch to AM2 if they want the X2 5000+ or FX-62.

Yeah, killing off a socket may break some people's heart, but this is technology. Either accept that fact that you will eventually need to upgrade or simply stay in the past.

What it means is that AMD doesn't care about the enthusiast anymore, and wants to make sure they can feed DELL with Opterons. Just think, AMD's love affair with their fanbase is drawing to an end. Once you realize that you're a nobody, just like with any other company, maybe your LUST for AMD will subside.

My overclocked barton performs well agaisnt presscot pentium 4's
And my A64 performs well against P3's. Big fukcing deal.

Calm the FCUK down, maybe you got ripped of having bought a presscot and felt a bitch about it, i dont no, but dont take your pathetic anger out on me when i was having a joke, some people in this world have no sense of humor, take a chill pill 😱
