^ IMHO, the all-time best game was Dungeon Master, circa 1987 on the Atari 520 or 1040ST. That game blew all its competition away. Before that, I was dinking around with Sierra Online games on a 8088 with a 16-color pre-VGA card and 3-tone-generator sound card :).

Nah, you're thinking of something else. QEMM was a piece of software that allowed you to use expanded memory. It's what we had to use way back in the day before the function was eventually implemented in DOS 4.0 as EMM386.

EGA graphics FTW!

Breaking a little the "off-topic", it's a little sad for everyone (except at AMD), but it looks like they'll have some extra time to get their act together:

Intel has recently decided to postpone its next-generation mainstream CPU Lynnfield along with the P55 chipset to the end of August or the beginning of September this year, and may postpone them to an even later time depending on the market situation, according to sources at motherboard makers.

In additional news, Intel will provide engineering samples of its next-generation entry-level CPU Havendale to motherboard makers in February this year, while design validation test (DVT) will be complete in July to August with mass production in September to October. However, Intel has postponed shipping to January next year to give its current entry-level CPU inventory more time to clear.

A big hello to Braziu ( você é carioca ? ) !!!

Anyways, Intel doesn't need ot rush. Core 2 is still quite on-game, adn you can't lower too much the price of your product ofyou wish to make money. They want to sing while they are winning.

Another on to Portuga, meu amigo! (não, eu sou Paulista, e "eles" nos odeiam!!!)

What's up in your beautiful country nowadays?! És de qual parte?...

Yeah, I agree with that, but it's quite sad for who had planned an upgrade... Not that now we don't have some decent hardware, and I'll happily upgrade, but it's always nice when you see tech moving forward that fast. Actually, I was way more enthusiastic about "i5" than i7. Gotta wait some more now.

Actually it was a Tandy enhanced CGA card that would do 16 colors at 320 x 200 I think. Saw it in a local Radio Shack with Kings Quest 2 or some such running on it. Compared to 4-color Loderunner, it was "breathtaking" LOL...

I bypassed the Hercules and EGA cards and went straight enhanced CGA to a VGA when they first came out.

Wish somebody would do a Dungeon Master or Chaos Strikes Back module on NeverWinterNights 2. Somebody did do an Eye of the Beholder 1 mod on NWN1, but it wasn't all that true to the original.

Just wait another 20 years or so and then you can reminisce about today's tech or if you're adventurous you can also try acquiring some old tech to mess around with. You'd actually be surprised at how many of the really old systems are still in service today. I occasionally use an electron microscope at work that needs to be booted up off of an 8" floppy drive and dates from the mid 1970's.

its a promo similar to Fry's here selling the i7 920 for $230.00. don't be surprised if the prices do lower since Intel is lowering the prices on their higher end Penryn's. i just wonder how low AMD can price their new CPU's before it hurts them though.

Realistically the Phenom II 940 is probably cheaper to produce than the 9950 due to the 45nm production process. Given that the 9950 was introduced at around $235 I'd say that we could reasonably see AMD cut the Phenom II prices to about that level and still make a decent profit on them. I think there will be some resistance to lowering the prices too quickly however as the general consensus is that these price cuts from Intel are meant to bleed down the existing C2Q inventory before the chips go EOL in a few months. Likely AMD will wait a few weeks and see how the sales of the Phenom II's are affected by the Intel drop and then respond accordingly.

Q9550 at $260 and Q9650 at $320 is a deathblow to P2 @ $275. Maybe this will give AMD a reason to drop the P2 940 down to reasonable prices. Until then, the 9950 BE remains the better buy.

AMD drop prices of PII

Around 15 percent, depending on market and model

AMD isn't just cutting jobs, it's also slashing prices of its latest Phenom II series quad-core CPUs.

As of today, the Phenom II X4 920, clocked at 2.80GHz, costs €182, a drop of around 10 percent compared to last week's prices. The CPU was launched at CES, and the was priced at €225 at launch, but prices quickly sank to the €200 mark soon after the launch. The Black Edition 940, clocked at 3.0GHz, is available for €212, and has shed €30 off its price.

For comparison, Intel's Q9400, clocked at 2.67GHz, costs €208, while the 3.0GHz Q9650 costs just under €300. Keep in mind, Intel is also slashing prices, and the latest AMD cuts are relatively fresh and subject to further change.

i am sure the price adjustments had some overlapping reasons. bad economy, clean up inventory, incremental phase out, screw your competitor, steal some thunder.

Im thinking it has more to do with AMD wanting to sell P2's, but who knows? Maybe AMD wasnt allowed to lower its prices until Intel did first? Or, does this sound like competition? Depends on how you look at it I guess

piss poor market is how i see it. Intel has a knee-jerk reaction to try to empty out high inventory and AMD follows with their own knee-jerk reaction. its good for consumers that still have some disposable income that's for sure!

More likely this is Intel thinking that they don't want to be stuck with warehouses full of obsolete processors they can't sell like happened when they went from the P4 Northwood to the P4 Prescott too quickly. You can still buy Northwood P4's from Newegg a full 3 years later

I would rather settle with a 940 than 945 and just wait for the next gen of processors from amd. I'm sure it will not be a huge performance increase going to am3 and it will still be behind i7. Until then I save my money and only upgrade video card when a good dx11 is released.
