Not now I'm not. I'm almost certain that ATI's been paid for, and that ATI's delivered their part of the equation with the 4xxx series. If Phenom II improves over B3 as B3 improved over B2, then that's a good step in the right direction. Profitability can be a house of cards. Company's can stay in business without being profitable as long as their sales and tech interests investors.

How long has Amazon been profitable? I can't get to bookstores in town easily (don't drive and they closed all the ones actually in town), so I spend my money at Amazon and get free shipping. Other companies have been in the same boat and eventually worked their way towards profitability.

AMD will probably avoid profitability until their next architecture, but spend that Arab dosh for research, such that they will be profitable in the future with a competitive CPU. My gut feeling is that as long as Intel does research in Israel, the Arabs will invest in AMD. Business wars are the only one's okay by me. That way, no one really gets hurt.

My problem with wr citing Steam is that the gamers there are probably oriented towards FPS. I set up a steam account years ago just to try the Half Life 2 demo and came away with two opinions:

1. Steam is a good idea if it keeps DRM off of games.

2. Valve created an interesting universe with the Half Life series, but it's FPS and I play CRPGs. If Valve did a CRPG set in that universe, I'd go for it.

They should add three cores to their survey anyways, just for chuckles. Us triple cripple owners should start a fan club and buy every generation of triple core CPU AMD puts out, at least for one of our PC's.

I'm shocked by the 940 temps at stock.

Were you shocked by the Prescott temps at stock? I hope you were. As is, I partly agree, I don't buy anything over 95 watts, and prefer nothing over 40 C or so, performance or not. There are those who aren't worried about temps, or don't use stock cooling, and it bothers them much less.

TC came up with insulting the triple core Phenom's as triple cripples and I kind of adopted it as a thing to be proud of. Xbit Lab's review of new dual cores from Intel showed that the 8750 was competitive in games and pulled ahead in applications that used 3 cores. I found it to be a good CPU until I decide when Phenom II's worth it in 2010. If Phenom II's not worth it, I'll wait till the next architecture.

I'm shocked [in a very pleasant way] by the 940 temps at stock. : )

They should add three cores to their survey anyways, just for chuckles.
They include that. 0.34% @ 3 cpus, up 21% sequentially. In November there were 30 times more quads and >100 times each of singles and duals.

The problem with Phenom x3 is the cost to performance ratio in the majority of games that are 1-2 core optimized. In the review you cited, they emphasized > 2 core games, where a Q6600 would be a notable improvement, whereas properly sampling the games out there would not lead to such optimism for x3 or the Q6600. I would think Phenom x3 fits a budget workstation more than a game machine.

Edit: yipsl, the xbit review of Intel dual cores was of severely cache reduced versions. When you compare a triple or even dual normal CPU versus cache crippled versions, you paint the former in bright light. When we look instead at xbit's main review of Phenom x3, where we have full Conroes and Wolfdales, the x3 gets slaughtered, and that is where you see the price/performance problem. Intel's extreme budget line was never strong to begin with.

I don't think AMD is in a position to be able to continue with these losses. AMD's market cap is 1.34B (much less than what they purchased ATI for). AMD continues to have losses. I should correct myself not to say that they need to have huge profits, all AMD needs to aim for right now is just plain breaking even or at least being in the neighborhood of breaking even.

Now that Intel is getting in the IMC game I'm afraid that AMD will start losing their market share in the server arena.

Bottom line is, AMD needs to start executing. Yes, we all know that most people buy cheap processors, but AMD is selling their best at cheap prices and Intel continues to be able to sell their best at premium prices while binning the not-so-good stuff to compete with AMD's best stuff.

AMD needs to do something to restore technological confidence in them. I'm not willing to build a new AMD system after watching what has happened to initial adopters with Quad FX and Phenom. Same goes for Phenom 2, me and others will be sitting back and waiting to see if Phenom 2 is the real deal or not.

Back in the day everyone was singing AMD's praises because AMD got tons of media attention for their processors that were better, and overclocked better than the Prescotts. Well know Intel is getting all the praise and massive overclocks and enthusiasts are showing up to LAN parties with Intel stickers on their boxes and not the Green Team. Word of mouth and reputation is still the best marketing tool, one that AMD had back in the Socket A and Socket 939 days, but they have since squandered their technological lead and tarnished their reputation with one helluva launch.

I can't take credit for creating the term "triple cripple", but I do take credit for it's popularization!

You got to call them as you see them. In the end the triple core is a viable option for some people, just as the "double cheeseburger" beats the pants off of anything that AMD can offer. Just keep in mind that a double cheeseburger combines two WORKING dual core processors, while a triple cripple is a quad with a bum core. Of course, triple cripples are much less expensive than double cheeseburgers!

Good points about Steam yipsl. These CSS and Halflife nuts mostly tend to use older pc's with older hardware. Meanwhile most say....MMO players, are using high end PC's or at least modern hardware.

Don't the current Opteron's also use somewhat slower transistors than desktop models in order to reduce power consumption?

Actually with the current phenoms you see a good 5-10% performance increase, and the Phenom II might be even better!

point is, 1066 isn't some special, new RAM. its overclocked 800 with looser timings.
your right though...if the original Phenom responded that favorably to it, the Phenom 2 may be even better. then again it may be better suited to the tighter timings. if nothing else i am anxious to find out!

No because I will hate you for having it. I want the 20Mbps/20Mbps FiOS. Cuz it makes DSL and Cable look like they are. Crap.

You chould check for FiOS in your area. Its not priced that bad and gives much better speed no matter what.

I'm not. When you run a game most of the time your temps wont get too high. In fact when I play a game with my Q6600 @ 3GHz I barely break 40c. Only when I run FRAPs and have the CPU @ 100% on all 4 cores does it hit 50-55c.

Not really. You would be suprised how many not only play CS:S on Steam. In fact a lot of these CS:S "nuts" are now playing L4D and they have upgraded to better hardware. And a lot play TF2 that benefits from better hardware as does HL2 EP2. And then there is GTA IV and a lot of other games from other companies.

Steam is a good way to look at popular hardware because more than just VALVe gamers use it.

k
i believe these are real but have you took this in to consideration!
this is probally on a AM2+ board which isnt updated to AM3. it also has ddr2 instead of ddr3
price😛erformance thats what amd is going to give us.

Everyone needs to stop and think. How many timews have they read or typed, "yea, the Phenom is close, but it draws soo much power, and cant be oceed" ?? Those days are gone. Being close was ok for some, and supposedly terrible for others. Now, close is closer with Deneb, now close is closer with AM3. People need to understand this now. Its all changed

Thats all true, a stock 3ghz quad is a pretty good accomplishment under a $1000 Extreme . My main concern is....I dont know, ive already said it lol. I want to replace this Q6600...soon. Ive been bidding on Q9550's for about 2 weeks now hoping to get lucky and magically snag one under $150 😀 But...obviously that dosent work. I think Intel price cuts are comming in January, and that still leaves me with a looming question...

Q9550, or PII 940 + 790GX, obviously the AMD setup is more expensive, but I will sell my Q6600 and P5Q.

Anyways this isnt about that. Back on topic I think a concern among alot of people in my position is....does this 4ghz OC 940 beat a 3.6ghz Q6600(or OCed Q9550)...enough to make the swap worthwhile.

Yea, it depends on Intels price cuts. Could be larger than normal, under the guise of "this economy", and uncle Intel will look good, but Im thinking itll be more of a need to drop prices at this point, because fiiiiiinally we have competition!!!!

if everything seen in the past couple days holds up in head to head benchmarks, you will at the very least owe AMD a thank you for driving prices down.

Honestly id much rather stick with Intel and go for the Q9550. I hold no brand loyalties or what not, but im not in the mood for a motherboard swap, or posting stuff on ebay to recoup cash.

Wish universal sockets would come back 🙁
