We have had several requests for a sticky on AMD's yet to be released Piledriver architecture ... so here it is.

I want to make a few things clear though.

Post a question relevant to the topic, or information about the topic, or it will be deleted.

Post any negative personal comments about another user ... and they will be deleted.

Post flame baiting comments about the blue, red and green team and they will be deleted.

Enjoy ...

thank you

I wanted to show people that the harder games can be played on budget and OEM systems and look reasonable
also I am teaching myself how to do video editing
I use Cyberlink PowerDirector 10 for my editing/rendering which is cool because it supports AMD GPU acceleration

In first persona perspective, its good to have some anti aliasing, but in strategy games it makes no difference. 1680x1050 basically blurs things out a bit. It is like FX post processing in assassins creed 2 and bf3.

HDMI 1.3 does not support the bandwidth necessary for 3D video and 7.1 surround sound or dual-link (to and from) connection from the TV to the entertainment center, only 1.4 does. From Wiki:

Version 1.3

HDMI 1.3 was released June 22, 2006 and increased the single-link bandwidth to 340 MHz (10.2 Gbit/s).[2][43][129] It optionally supports deep color, with 30-bit, 36-bit and 48-bit xvYCC, sRGB, or YCbCr, compared to 24-bit sRGB or YCbCr in previous HDMI versions. It also optionally supports output of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio streams for external decoding by AV receivers.[130] It incorporates automatic audio syncing (audio video sync) capability.[43] It defined cable Categories 1 and 2, with Category 1 cable being tested up to 74.25 MHz and Category 2 being tested up to 340 MHz.[68] It also added the new type C Mini connector for portable devices.[58][131]

HDMI 1.3a was released on November 10, 2006 and had Cable and Sink modifications for type C, source termination recommendations, and removed undershoot and maximum rise/fall time limits.[2] It also changed CEC capacitance limits, clarified sRGB video quantization range, and CEC commands for timer control were brought back in an altered form, with audio control commands added.[2] It also added support for optionally streaming SACD in its bitstream DST format rather than uncompressed raw DSD like from HDMI 1.2 onwards.[2]

HDMI 1.3b, 1.3b1 and 1.3c were released on March 26, 2007, November 9, 2007, and August 25, 2008 respectively. They do not introduce differences on HDMI features, functions, or performance,[132] but only describe testing for products based on the HDMI 1.3a specification regarding HDMI compliance (1.3b [121][133][134]), the HDMI type C Mini connector (1.3b1 [121][133][134]) and active HDMI cables (1.3c [75][135]).[132]

Version 1.4

HDMI 1.4 with Audio Return Channel
HDMI 1.4 was released on May 28, 2009, and the first HDMI 1.4 products were available in the second half of 2009.[62][136] HDMI 1.4 increases the maximum resolution to 4K × 2K, i.e. 3840 × 2160p (Quad HD) at 24 Hz/25 Hz/30 Hz or 4096 × 2160p at 24 Hz (which is a resolution used with digital theaters); an HDMI Ethernet Channel (HEC), which allows for a 100 Mbit/s Ethernet connection between the two HDMI connected devices so they can share an Internet connection;[82] and introduces an Audio Return Channel (ARC),[81] 3D Over HDMI, a new Micro HDMI Connector, expanded support for color spaces, with the addition of sYCC601, Adobe RGB and Adobe YCC601; and an Automotive Connection System.[62][137][138][139][140] HDMI 1.4 supports several stereoscopic 3D formats including field alternative (interlaced), frame packing (a full resolution top-bottom format), line alternative full, side-by-side half, side-by-side full, 2D + depth, and 2D + depth + graphics + graphics depth (WOWvx),[59][141][142] with additional top/bottom formats added in version 1.4a . HDMI 1.4 requires that 3D displays support the frame packing 3D format at either 720p50 and 1080p24 or 720p60 and 1080p30.[142] High Speed HDMI 1.3 cables can support all HDMI 1.4 features except for the HDMI Ethernet Channel.[59][141][142]

HDMI 1.4a was released on March 4, 2010 and adds two additional mandatory 3D formats for broadcast content, which was deferred with HDMI 1.4 in order to see the direction of the 3D broadcast market.[143][144] HDMI 1.4a has defined mandatory 3D formats for broadcast, game, and movie content.[143] HDMI 1.4a requires that 3D displays support the frame packing 3D format at either 720p50 and 1080p24 or 720p60 and 1080p24, side-by-side horizontal at either 1080i50 or 1080i60, and top-and-bottom at either 720p50 and 1080p24 or 720p60 and 1080p24.

So 1.4a is what I use from my PS3 to my Onkyo A/V receiver and from the receiver to the TV.

However I agree 225% 😀 that "digital is digital", despite all the BS from Monster about how their cable reduces noise and other artifacts due to better construction or materials. That may have been true back in the bad ol' analog days, but not with digital.. I wonder how Monster is faring in the poor economy nowadays.. Maybe all those Apple TV fans will be buying them 😛..

Trinity has better power efficiency than Llano, correct? I was thinking while reading the recent comparison between the A3870 and the Pentium G630 that the power consumption story between Intel and AMD is a bit unfair. The A3870 consumes 100W, which is 25W per core (ignoring the powerful IGPU). The G630 consumes 65W, which is actually 33W per core (ignoring the weaker IGPU). Given that the G630 seems to give20% more processing power per core, while the AMD chip seems to consume 20% less power per core, I think the AMD chips are offering equal processing power per watt in comparison to Intel. With Piledriver significantly better than Llano, can AMD actually claim a lead in performance per watt?

The number of games that try and put out a good, well though out story has diminished into almost nothing. I remember looking through my PS2 and Gamecube liberaries the other day, and could not believe the difference. "Stories" in most of (there are a few exceptions) today's games are little more than those of a children's cartoon.

+100
Good to know I'm not alone in this regard.

I was mostly joking but if it keeps people off the streets and causing real harm to society I'm for it.

I'm not one that buys into the idea that piracy truly hurts the gaming industry. It's been around since day 1 and yet the gaming industry has still ballooned into a massive 70+ billion empire. The penetration of electronic gaming systems has clearly risen faster than the piracy effect.

I'm sure they would love getting more than just $10 per person on the planet per year but they're not doing so bad.

You forget - what FPS? I went through some of those videos and there was too much stutter and lag. I suppose you could get used to it, but for me, anything less than 50FPS average isn't enough.

so u r one of those who don't think businesses deserve their share, but instead investors and CEO's should just make "enough", say $50k a year, to feed their families. i c

I guess its a matter of personal preference. In single palyer, I am ok with 35 frames, in multiplayer 55 is the bare minimum.

They definitely don't need to earn millions a year, that's for sure. I'd cap them at 100K.

lol if they had to invest hundreds of millions to start a competitive business and then only earn 100k, capitalism would be dead. Communism is dead for that matter :bounce:

Capitalism is a broken system that has never worked and never will. It will collapse into a burning pile one day and the rich will be the first to go. This isn't a politics forum so I'll leave it at that.

This is a load of crap its because 90% of teens like shooting games and that is it and it is easier to make a new COD every year then it is to make a game with a 20+ hour story line. Why is your statement not true its not true because Consoles(besides Nintendo even though their lacking as well!) don't have any quality single player games as well and yes i think pirating happens less on the consoles then the computers since its harder to mod the console then it is to download a torrent. I love single player games with a great story line but i don't get that often. I'm looking forward for Resident evil 6 even though Capcom is caring to much about action now and co-op like every other company and not focusing to much on the story line/single player experience. I'm also looking forward for Sim city and GTA5. I never play online games its never been a hobby of mine.

Not when the president of the united states makes less! CEO's don't need all that money and they have PLENTY of money now more then they did 10 years ago just like their taxes are a lot less now then they were back in the 60's when we did have jobs and the movie industry has more money now then ever, to think other wise is not looking at the facts.

Watch this

http://www.southparkstudios.com/clips/103759/not-a-big-deal

Also what do you rate as a share? 10 million 50 million how about 100 million if you think they need or deserve any of that your wrong.

They earn and should receive more then this a year and like all of businesses statements about money are exaggerated to try to make a point. This is not a exaggeration DVD's cost 20$ games cost 60$ and CD's cost 20$ I think almost everyone knows that these people(studios) make more money today then they did 10 years ago while other people in the U.S make less today then they did 10 years ago, regardless to this i'm not spending 60$ on a game or 20$ on a DVD unless its the biggest title of the year and i rarely do it then i wait for steam to have a great deal or amazon as for movies or tv shows i just pay 7$ for netflix. To think newer games are worth 60$ or crappy new movies is worth 20$ is unbelievable.

Communism fell into a burning pile. So did monarchy. Capitalism survives and wills survive. There will always be rich like those ceo's that make more than president because they invested time and money and know how to get money from kids and there will always be broke little whining thieves that complain about other having more than they "need"

I will leave it at that.

HA!. Monarchies still exist, so do forms of communism. Capitalism won't last.

Capitalist monarchies where money and usually elected government decide things. Almost no absolute monarchies left. Capitalism lasted since 16th century and dominates the world. I know u dont like it because u are not at the top of the ladder making billions, but hey, it beats north korean labor camps :)

I didnt see that while playing
I do not completely disagree but I think that high 20s and 30s is playable
do also realize that I was using FRAPS recording software so that the recorded gameplay wasnt as good as when FRAPS wasnt running
FRAPS will rob about 5 FPS or more from a game while recording especially on a weak system like a 3ghz Core2Duo I had at the time
also maybe because I have poor vision and wear coke bottle glasses that is why it doesnt bother me
there really wasnt any stuttering of gameplay at all
they played smooth
I did notice some "blurring" of graphics during intense action scenes though

do realize that a game that is locked at 30fps with no drops below 30fps will look just fine
If there was two systems setup with one locked at a constant 30fps and another locked at a constant 50fps
I will bet money nobody could tell the difference
it is really the drops in minimum FPS that makes the difference
you could have a game that ran 60fps average but if it drops to 10FPS occasionally it would look like crap
while a game that plays at a constant 35fps with no drops would look great

I payed $65 for Max Payne 3 and dont regret it
I think the storyline is really good, the combat engine is awesome and the bullet time rendering is amazing
one of the better games I have seen in a long time

also I bought BF2:Bad Company 2 a month ago for $20 and really happy with that too
great deal for $20

as far as piracy goes
alot of us have done at one time or another
TBH I have sailed the HIgh Seas myself over the years
but at the same time there are plenty of games that I have bought
and nowadays I buy my games instead of dealing with all the Pirate crap
like worrying if there is trojans or if there will be a lawsuit letter in the mail
I dont look down on people who do it but it doesnt seem worth the trouble

I do admit that I would DL a torrent if I wanted to try out an application with the idea of buying it later
some companies are lame with their their demos and trial versions so it is nice to try out a full version first
the problem is with PC software that there is NO return policy if you dont like it
the software companies have gotten better about releasing BETA copies to try or giving decent free trials
wasnt always like that

cool I have to try that
just so used to FRAPS
been using it for years
does a nice job of recording 1080p and so easy to use
i am old (42) and kind of set in my ways LOL

and we better get back on topic before mods get pissed off at us

not related to trinity but is AMD news
http://www.guru3d.com/news_story/amd_11_6_inch_windows_8_tablet_later_this_year.html

looks like AMD really wants to make an impact in the tablet/mobile market and the whole way they are going with APUs fits into that nicely

Respect. I have done the same. :sol: As far as game prices go, steam has greatest sales of all time. The only games I paid $50+ for were BF2142, BF3, Civ 4/5. I just could not wait for prices to come down

30FPS is poor. I can easily tell the difference between 50 and 30. Big difference. If you played on a grunty gaming system you'd see the difference. Its liquid smoothness vs a stuttery mess. 60 drop to 50 is not a big problem. 30 to 20 is.
