We have had several requests for a sticky on AMD's yet to be released Piledriver architecture ... so here it is.

I want to make a few things clear though.

Post a question relevant to the topic, or information about the topic, or it will be deleted.

Post any negative personal comments about another user ... and they will be deleted.

Post flame baiting comments about the blue, red and green team and they will be deleted.

Enjoy ...

cinebench is one of the worst benchmarks for the modular design. I don't think it is an indication of processor performance in anything except cinema 3D or w/e the software its based off of.

Just looking at benches like photoshop or 7zip, it shows the FX ahead of the phenom.

Most synthetics are compiled to show a concurrent AMD chip slower than the older chips, it creates myopic sentiments and people to buy another product, AMD know this but as they told me, they will not spend millions of dollars going on a bench-marketing campaign.

If he wants to do a bench war i will since i have the same results.

I'm not much for synthetics either but its the fastest way to compare results. But in the real world Bulldozer was a slow performer on loads of low threaded applications it was shown on a decent amount of software from every single review. Even on reviews that used more then 4 cores bulldozer had a issue coming anywhere near a 4 core with Hyper threading and it was performing like this with a much bigger power draw(the whole reason they went to a module design is to cut power draw) when compared to Intel.

king smp My Bulldozer 8150 Oc'd to 4.5Ghz (21 x 215 1.4v) scores 7.41 CPU pts in Cinebench 11.5.

FX 8150 @ 4.00GHZ Cinebench 11.5 4C/8T (lol) - 6.51 which is around a 2500K and .30 less than a i7 and a lot more than a 1100T.

MaxXMem is a blood bath. 25sec for a 1100T while 12 seconds for a 8150. Basically a FX is a faster chip when put to the right synthetics it shows its true performance.

Metro 2033 (the most objectively neutral title which stresses CPU and GPU alike)

1-2 FPS less than a i7 2600/2700/3770, 1-3FPS more than a i5 2400/2500/3570, 5 FPS more than a 1100T.

As before, the initial blueprint of Zambezi was a 2 Billion transistor chip with a base clock of 4ghz, at that clock it matches its Intel equivalent competitor. Piledriver is still well short of 2 Billion transistors and that is with GF having mature its process.

CineBench

Fritz Chess Benchmark

1024M: 219.167

This is with my Phenom II x6 overclock at 3.9Ghz.

I did a re-run with the 1100T at 3.8ghz got 6.85

I am waiting for my imported AMD Radeon BEMP RAM, I could easily break the 10sec barrier with MaxXmem which is very impressive on a AMD chip. I am running spare 4GB kits of CMS3 which is not a very good kit to use like any Corsair kit, bad overclocking memory.

Not too bad, little high on the voltage (depending on motherboard) but considerably better than what toms does "Clock Frequency: 4.6 GHz, Multiplier: 23x, CPU Voltage: 1.5 V "

Pretty much thats the untrained poor mans rule for overclocking, crank the voltage and then see how fast it can go.

so wich voltage? cpu only? sure, if you want high volts. Im at 4.7 ghz. I initially got there at 1.5+v on the cpu ... didn't like that so I started playing with the vast multitude of settings.

First visit ... llc control. sure saving power(voltage drop designed into the cpu) at stock is great to allow the system to lower the voltage, not so much when overclocked. maxed that out.

CPU NB voltage? sure, lets add +.1V
CPU HTT voltage, sure, lets try +.05V
Memory voltage, why not +.025V (already at 1.6)

after playing and tweaking for ~ a month or two and lowering the cpu voltage

4.7 ghz, 1.344V (interesting to note that the stock turbo voltage is 1.4, im under that)

1.4 is respectable, but everyone who sais it requires 1.5+ are out of their minds. Why is power consumption vary sooo much on oc benches? crank the voltage and watch the meter fly. does that mean their test was valid? sure, accurate? no.

My 1100T at 4.1ghz scored a 7.26 and a 7.30 if you look close on the screenshot

I payed $168 at Microcenter for my 1100T and BTW I am just trash talking for fun LOL

All Love for AMD FTW

that is so wrong as I just proved with this screenshot

22nm vs 32 nm that's the difference, put it against previous gen and the difference isn't that big.

Catching up in chipsets ?? 990FX is from 2011 and has Sata3 and also supports dual 16x while Z68 and Z77 chipset don't support.
USB 3.0 ¿? How long is been out ?? And how old is 990FX ??

On the other hand 14nm from globalfoundries, that means processors are going to become "slower" you can't increase speed 'cause the risk of electromigration, that doesn't apply to 22-32 nm (well, it matters but not that much )

Also, I will like to see FX8120 or FX8150 benchmarked again 1 year after release to see how much it has improved due to software, a few days ago Tom's made a review of the A8-3870, and 1 year after release performance has increase considerably due to better software optimization

I wish i could clock my 1100T at that without increasing the voltage My 3.9Ghz is with low voltage and it runs real cool and my PC doesn't use much power consumption.

This probably seems really nooby to you guys but I don't want to start a new thread for it and I don't know too much about processors. But here it goes:

Is this a really bad time to buy a Fx? Is Piledriver right around the corner? Should I wait?

lol thanks guys :)

Wait even if you dont buy piledriver bulldozer will be cheaper after release unless bulldozer is faster 😀

Right now Intel is the best to buy.

I respect that.
I do folding at home which helps medical science so I consider the extra expense in electricity to be a charitable donation.
Too bad the taxman doesnt see it that way LOL 😀

also I went crazy in the cooling department with a Antec Kuhler 620 Liquid Cooling system with dual Scythe Ultra Kaze 3000rpm push-pull fans on the 120mm radiator
probably will do a custom watercooling loop eventually with a 240mm radiator
I had my 1100T booting into desktop and almost finishing Cinebench at 4.4ghz 1.55v
I believe I hit a thermal wall so I want to upgrade my cooling
so far the best I can do is 4.1ghz stable because of heat

we shouldnt go too far off topic LOL

I dont think that Bulldozer was bad just overhyped by AMD marketing which led to alot of disappointment
hopefully PD will be the one walking quietly and carrying a big stick

I hate to say this in an AMD thread but money wise getting a decent Sandybridge isnt that expensive
In USA can find the 2500K and 2400 for good prices

with that said the mobos are a little cheaper with AMD for the same feature sets as an Intel but even that is leveling off

I am fortunate enough to have an Xeon equalivent to a I5-2400 and also an Phenom II x 6 1100T so i am definitely not a fanboy

very happy with my 1100T and use that as my main rig since I do alot of work that uses the 6 cores (video and crazy multitasking)

so if you are smart and budget your money around the way the computer is going to be used you will be fine
if you are looking for a gaming system then Intel would probably be the way to go
if you are looking for more of a multithreaded workstation then AMD has its benefits
