it's like the in comic books. every 2-3 years the whole continuity get's reset/retconned/erased/convoluted.

i guess this thread will need to be renamed if the news of new naming scheme is true. 😗

According to an article which has been posted on www.game-debate.com, there will be 6 new GPU series coming from AMD this fall.
They name "HIS" as the culprit for the leaked info about the cards.
"HIS accidentally posted a host of new cards in its coming soon section, including the hotly anticipated flagship card detail as ‘R9 280X iPower IceQ X ² Boost Clock 3GB GDDR5 PCI-E DLDVI-I/HDMI/2xMini DP’."

The equivalent to the HD7970 seems to pack no more than 3GB of GDDR5, which I think is a bit disappointing - but remember this is still unofficial data.
"It's believed that much of the new range will rely on the older and cheaper Pitcairn and Tahiti dies, with its flagship Hawaii being the only new part to compete against NVIDIA's GK110 core."
Sounds disappointing.

"The full range of leaked APUs is as follows:

AMD R-290 (Replacing HD 7990 Flagship)
AMD R-280 (Replacing HD 7900 Series)
AMD R-270 (Replacing HD 7800/7700 Series)
AMD R-260 (Replacing HD 7770 Series)
AMD R-250 (Replacing HD 7700 Series)
AMD R-240 (Replacing HD 7600 Series) "

One man's disappointing is another man's realistic.

I was SERIOUSLY hoping to see the higher end GPUs sport at least 4GB of GDDR5 ESPECIALLY since AMD is constantly promoting high-resolution gaming and the Eyefinity setup(s) (which I happen to own paired to an HD6950 in 3x1)

I'm not only gonna play BF4 - I strongly believe GTA V will be released in 2014 and I KNOW for sure it will require more than GTA IV did in the "Recommended System Requirements" department. A 2GB card is a must-have for GTA IV in Eyefinity. I really thought they would respond in some way to the new way nVidia configured their cards (going with 4GB of GDDR5 - see the GTX670, the GTX760).

I enjoy Call of Duty, Need For Speed, GTA, Crysis and games like that - I couldn't play Crysis 3 on high in Eyefinity with a 2GB HD6950.

MORE INFOABOUT THE RADEON R SERIES GPUs:

It seems that the R9 and R7 series will be released together.
The R9 280Xwill obviously replace the HD7970GHz Edition - it will be based off Hawaii XT.
It is thought to sport between 2304 and 2560 Stream Processors.
It is said the high-end GPU would most likely sport a 384-bit wide interface.

Displayport connections will apparently NOT be featured on these cards, but rather miniDisplayPorts - but that goes down to each GPU manufacturer's choice and I'm sure we WILL actually see full size display port connectors on some cards.

LEAKED INFO FROM HIS

HIS R9 280X iPower IceQ X² Boost Clock 3GB GDDR5 PCI-E DLDVI-I/HDMI/2xMini DP
HIS R7 250 iCooler 2GB DDR3 PCI-E HDMI/SLDVI-D/VGA
HIS R7 250 iCooler 1GB GDDR5 PCI-E HDMI/SLDVI-D/VGA
HIS R7 250 IceQ 1GB GDDR5 PCI-E HDMI/SLDVI-D/VGA
HIS R7 240 iCooler 2GB DDR3 PCI-E HDMI/SLDVI-D/VGA
HIS R7 240 IceQ 2GB DDR3 PCI-E HDMI/SLDVI-D/VGA
HIS R7 240 iCooler 1GB GDDR5 PCI-E HDMI/SLDVI-D/VGA

After updating the chart, they came up with the following data:

R9 290 series are successor to HD x990 (dual-gpu)
R9 280 series are successor to HD x900 (single-gpu)
R9 270 series are successor to HD x800
R9 260 series are successor to HD x700 series.

The R9 290 will replace the HD7990 and will obviously be a dual GPU.
These guys said they didn't know whether the R9 270 will feature a new architecture or not.

The R-200 series will feature many rebranded GPUs (Cape Verde, Pitcairn, Bonaire...).
To hell with this whole rebranding.

The mobile version fo the new generation will reportedly be called the AMD Radeon R-M200 series.
They said the Radeon R5 M200 will be based on Sun GPU and that the difference between DEDICATED and INTEGRATED GPUs will be made by one letter included in the new naming scheme, as following:
R-D200
R-I200

It doesn't matter whether you or I are going to play or not! That's what everything is going to be geared toward and with AMD having corned the console market BF4 is all you are going to haer about over the coming forever!

:) :) :) :)
Would you be kind enough to find ANY HD7870 with 3GB of VRAM? :)
I bet they meant HD7950.
You know what? This is the very first time I see 3GB of VRAM in a game's system requirements - even if it's in the recommended SR section...they are already recommending 3GB GPUs.
There are pages you can check games' system requirements on and see whether your PC could handle the game or not. Even those guys state a "3GB HD7870" as the recommended requirement. Am I missing something?

Right. That's, if they release an R9 277 and if they equip it with 3GB of VRAM.
Right now, as the current AMD Radeon line-up stands, there is no such thing as an HD7870 with 3GB of VRAM.

The hilarious part in all this?
There are GT630 cards with 4GB of GDDR3 on them.
There are GT610 cards with 2GB of GDDR3 on them. (passive cooling included!)
Hell, there are even GT210 cards with 1GB on of VRAM.
Those cards will NEVER really make use of their memory in an optimal way, so I can't help but wonder, why on earth has AMD never released an HD7870 with 3GB of VRAM?
Well, that's an easy one: that's one of the reasons to go with the HD7950 and above, isn't it?

I think their specific product line-up will end up something like this (considering the performance gap between each card) :
AMD R-290 (Replacing HD 7990 Flagship)
R-295
AMD R-280 (Replacing HD 7900 Series)
R-288
R-286
R-282
AMD R-270 (Replacing HD 7800/7700 Series)
R-279
R-276 / R-277 (performance-wise the HD7850 is closer to theHD7870 than it is to the HD7790)
R-273
AMD R-260 (Replacing HD 7770 Series)
AMD R-250 (Replacing HD 7700 Series)
R-258
R-252
AMD R-240 (Replacing HD 7600 Series)
R-246
R-243

Wow, given the data provided, the R9-280X could end up being very close to the TITAN, surpassing it in many areas:
http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=683&card2...

I realized the R9-280X is nothing but an improved HD7970 GHz Edition.
Set the Core Clock to 1265 and Memory Clock to 3470 and you get the right figures -- that seem to surpass TITAN in Memory Bandwidth, FLOP and Pixel Fill Rate. All that while it would get beaten in Texture Fill Rate. How much did they say it was gonna cost? $300 ?
It looks like a done deal to me.
Note the TITAN still has more Texture Units and Raster Operators & Shader Processors. Nevertheless, this R9-280X looks extremely interesting.

Update:
I was very disappointed when I heard there was only one card based off Hawaii, but it seems there are a couple of them, at considerably different price points (yay!!!) :
Radeon R9 Series
Radeon R9-290X -$700
Radeon R9-290 - $500

We could have an alternative to the $700 GPU.
From what I've seen so far, they don't seem to be willing to comment on it or to say when they'll release it, but there appears to be a Radeon R9-290.
