295X2 IS old. Not many people want it now. Now that GPUs like 980 ti and Fury X are out, no good use for a 295x2.

As for fury X2, it will come out after nano

No good use for a card that is faster than Fury X, 980 Ti and Titan? You're funny.

People don't want to really deal with driver support / issues as from a 295x2. I do know a forum member who switched from 2 295x2s to a titan x and he saw no laggyness or however you spell it

Point is, most people want single card solutions to gaming rather than having to deal with drivers etc.

Not hitting on the 295x2 card, it was great for its time, but now that both AMD and NVIDIA are moving GPU tech forward, we might see little use for a dual gpu card.

WTF AMD. Man that pisses me off. I really want to get an Asus R9 Fury STRIX for my X58 system. I'm already peeved I have to wait on my two Asus 980Ti STRIX I ordered until at least 10 August (Amazon says delivery estimate 10AUG-10SEP). I wonder when the heck the Fury STRIX will actually be available.

so far there is no rumor about such card exist. if the card did exist it will be based on full Tonga. i don't know why AMD did not release full tonga as radeon yet. it should have a good potential. probably AMD make some kind of agreement with Apple not to release full tonga as radeon?

he/she was asking for 380X

As far as I remember there will be no 380X. Unless they cut down Hawaii's GPU a bit more. Tonga can't go to a higher tier, from what I remember.

Cheers!

they don't need to cut hawaii to get 380X. Tonga chip that used in both 285 and 380 itself is not fully enabled chip.

The GPU itself, Tonga, is AMD’s first released GCN 1.2 GPU, with R9 285 arriving before the previously announced Tonga-based FirePro W7100. We’ll dive into further detail into GCN 1.2 on the following pages, but from a high level overview Tonga looks a lot like an optimized Tahiti. AMD has confirmed that R9 285 is not utilizing a “full” Tonga configuration, so R9 285 is not the highest possible configuration for Tonga.

Oh, that is very interesting. Thanks for that.

Then that could mean yields are not good enough? But then again, at this point in time, I would be expecting full Tonga GPUs in the consumer segment. Maybe they're selling too good in Pro segment?

Cheers!

Just curious what you guys think: Should AMDs declining and, frankly alarming, corporate fiscal/financial situation play any role in an individuals' graphics card purchase?

Does it cause any hesitation, as in:
1) maybe they won't be around for long (not likely)?
2) (or more likely) they'll spend less on R&D and therefore be less responsive with driver updates and innovation to benefit the end user (something we've already seen)?
3) Fewer game developers will want to build in hardware optimizations for a company in decline?

Or maybe you guys are just the opposite, a weak AMD means they need us all to pull together and support them to help them out of the trough.

What's your take?

1. Seeing that AMD is still having financial problems even after launching their new GPUs, is pretty much bad. Expectancy rate of the company is low...
2. Yep. They have done it before and i can see them doing it again.
3. If there is less people using AMD hardware, Devs arn't gonna take the time to optimize hardware of a company who is falling drastically.

While I hope they come back, I see no chance if they keep slashing R&D

The lower the company value, the higher the likeness of AMD being bought by someone. Even if Intel keeps X86 out of the buying deal, the graphics business is still an interesting one to have if the buyer can cut the fat and streamline everything in AMD.

So, the point is, it should not affect a purchase decision. Just like it did not when ATI moved to AMD's hands.

Cheers!

1) AMD will be around for many years at minimum because their debt doesn't have any large amounts coming due for years.
2) False premise. AMD's drivers have been getting BETTER, not worse, even as their financial situation has been deteriorating for a long time.
3) Outside of mantle, there aren't really "optimizations" for AMD specific hardware, since AMD's graphics optimizations are "open" for Nvidia to also put into their GeForce line.

So really none of your 3 questions have any impact at this time.

Better question would be how many more times can Nvidia shaft their customers before people stop buying Geforce cards.

1) Bankruptcy is expected for around 2020, when debt obligations arrive.

2) They have been firing people, closing centers, and cutting R&D and customers support during last years. The trend will continue

3) Those optimizations are sponsored by the hardware company, see for instance Mantle versions of games. Without money devs will not be payed for optimizations. Lack of money is the reason for Mantle halt.

It's really close, but given the price (assuming you're in the US), the AMD card will hold up in more situations, especially at resolutions higher than 1080p. But having 8 GB with the AMD card will also ensure you won't get VRAM stutter at 1080p as well. A relatively small downside of AMD, in general right now, is that buying their cards means you get locked out of certain proprietary pieces of eye candy (e.g. PhysX) unless you can figure out a special hack. Other than that, though, the 390 is arguably a moer well rounded option for the price than than the 970. That said, both cards are very good, and both compare closely to one another, so it's not like you're going to go wrong with either one. If you really can't decide, flipping a coin will be as good a method for choosing as any. Good luck!
