Isn't it possible to offload all of the challenging stuff to the graphics card and use a budget AMD or Intel Celeron processor for everything else?

[citation][nom]otacon72[/nom]AMD is a generation behind intel and will be for a long time at this rate. I've been hearing about Bulldozer since what 2009? Bulldozer won't be out until 2011. Intel's Sandy Bridge will be here this Fall so AMD will be a generation behind...again. Thumb me down all you want. I build and sell computers for some extra cash and none of my customer's want AMD. I only use ATI cards but will never put an AMD CPU in anything I build.[/citation]

Strange, I build PC's all day for my customers, shipping Low-end to High end builds and I use predominately (90%) AMD CPU and Mobo. Only a few high end builds get i7 on x58 as you can build a far more balanced system on AMD allowing your budget to expand in storage, graphics, case and PSU as well as really good KB/Mouse combo (The only thing you actually feel when using the PC is KB/Mouse so don't scrimp there ever)

No, AMD is better value for money, and also allows me to sell PC's, If I used Intel only, I would sell far far less!

[citation][nom]mayne92[/nom]Any pansy can build a PC...[/citation]

You calling me a PANSY!!!! lol

True True, but It takes a special kind of geeky pansy to do it right! At least me being a pansy leaves my Mortgage paid without any bosses!

unless you are building strictly for graphical companies or individuals that do a ton of rendering or video transcoding you are better off with AMD as you can get a SSD boot drive and a 2tb storage or r 1tb in raid 0 as well as extra goodies for that core i7. Gaming doesn't need more and AMD triple core and a 5750 or higher. Video and audio you can go with a 1090t and save you self still around 100 dollars. for personal general use and gaming i put in the 640s every time and a 5750 or 5770.

Why I should pay more while I can pay less and get approximately the same performance.

And any performance more than you can get from AMD Phenom II X6 1090T are unneeded.

I'm using an Athlon II x2 240 and it seems to me that most of Intel's speed advantage comes from those seemingly ridiculous instruction sets it supports. K10 processors don't support SSE4 fully or SSSE3 both of which I know are used for a PS2 emulator's graphics plugins. I'm assuming there also useful for physics and the like. AMD is shooting its self in the foot performance wise not including them. Bulldozer is supposed to bring them up to date. We shall see...

Unless your running a server 😉

[citation][nom]nevertell[/nom]Yet, they are still a teeny bit better than the phenoms, and you don't have to buy a new motherboard if you already own a lga755 socket m/b with a pentium dual-core or some other core2 chip.[/citation]

looks like you're a bit outdated

Lower prices won't get AMD my business after my socket broke when I was taking the stock heatsink off. The CPU came out with the heatsink, without any effort either. I know its semi common but it really makes me made. I already got my 1156 board in. Next week I will be heading to Micro Center for an i7 870 and the only upgrade I will have to worry about is my 4870.

[citation][nom]2real[/nom]how to amd's compare to i7s when running vitual machines?[/citation]

incomplete,as the right question is, how do i7s compare to amd's CPUs when running VMs provided that the 2 CPUs are AT THE SAME PRICE?

My 955BE also came out with the heatsink but I put it back in and no harm done.If this happens again though, then I'm getting a replacement board

[citation][nom]masterasia[/nom]I don't care how much AMD drops the price. I want performance. Intel is still the performance king.[/citation]

Then you're one of the rich guys

Then all your customers are either rich or don't do their homework properly because AMD defeats INTEL in value analysis but INTEL is the undisputed performance kings (I remember a time when AMD was the better performer and INTEL was trying to catchup & I hope that history will repeat itself)

[citation][nom]mouettus[/nom]I do a lot of video encoding... so I'm bound to those i7's right now. but for general purpose PC, I'd go AMD anytime![/citation]

If you do video encoding/render/cs5/any other heavy task Phenom II X6 perform equal or better than i7 quad+ht at same clocks. If you believe that you're bound to i7 is just lying to yourself.

Saw x264 HD/handbrake benchmark?

Unlees you tell me that buy a lot i7 970/980x sixcores. Then yes, they perform better.

[citation][nom]otacon72[/nom]Don't get me wrong I'm glad AMD is around but come on...put out a CPU that gives intel a run for it's money![/citation]

Just compare corporate sizes and funding.Add to that that INTEL can't give you a complete platform with decent graphics performance (only CPUs and chipsets) While AMD CAN give you a complete platform (CPUs, Chipsets, and very good graphics card).I respect AMD way more than INTEL because, despite being at a performance disadvantage, they own the sub $150 CPU market.

Well, think about the new: it is about pockets, regardless of performance and who's better than the other one. This is about taking advantage of a fair deal. Up to now, Intel has better processors like the i7's and some i5's, Ok; but unless you are planning to do Rocket science we all can say AMD's performance is very good, and really affordable.

Choosing wether to go w/Big Green or Big Blue is a matter of marketing, pockets and choices.

I was already looking into getting an Athlon II X4 640 soon, now I'm positive I'm getting that one.

Now if I could just find a micro ATX mobo with SATA 3, USB 3, and firewire (for DVI video cameras) at a good price (I'm on a college student budget).

I love both Intel and AMD's offerings. For the moment I'm in full support of AMD and have 1 - 1090T system, 3 - X4 630 systems and 1 old faithful X2 6000 system for dvd playback. I'm all about price/performance ratio and that helped me decide to go AMD all the way. It also helped me to decide that after having so many bandwidth problems on my 775 socket platform systems that I just sold everything on Ebay and went AMD. I will buy Intel again but only after theres at least a 30-40% performance gain in a comparable price point. And even then, if my systems do what I need them to do it may be longer than that...

[citation][nom]Nintendork[/nom]Poisoner Just put the cpu to stress before taking it from the socket (system off after stress).Congrats in your obsolete 1156 platform.[/citation]
Its not really obsolete when I will have an 870 in there. I don't care if Intel kills the socket, I will get years out of my computer and won't have to worry about squeezing performance out of it or what cpu to upgrade to. I never enjoyed my Athlon II because all I did was try to make it faster, benchmark after benchmark.

I don't think I understand your statement. The Athlon II's OC very well and would last you just as long. I know, I have 3 of them and you can hit 3.6ghz on the first try...
