This seems more like amd is selling gpus to Intel devices. So Intel make the cpu and amd make the gpu and Intel clue these together in their factories.
First I was thinking that Intel Also make the gpu, but the gpu would be designed by amd. That would have been the fastest and most effient amd gpu ever, because it would have been made by Intel, but now it seems that Global foundries makes the gpu and Intel make the rest, so the gpu will suffer the same problems as all amd products at this moment. The proses does not like high frequences...

Vega architecture as being produced is designed as a low power chip. It doesn't demonstrate great performance per watt on the high end because it wasn't really meant for that. This is coming from a company that basically swore they weren't going to compete in the high end market a few years ago. Clearly they know where the profits really come from and it isn't big desktop graphics cards.

Should be quite good I would think. Hopefully they make it into a few NUCs, I would buy one just to mess with it.

I beg to differ on where the profits are.

If AMD can make a graphics card that is more efficient in mining ethereum than a Geforce 1070 they literally won't be able to keep them in stock.

Miners will buy as many as they can produce.

I find this interesting because when the graphic processors were part of the CPU they shared the same memory. Now that the graphic processors are separated from the CPU they have their own high speed memory. This should make an impressive leap in laptop graphics performance without increasing thickness.

Polaris is already a huge mining. Putting more GPU for miners is not a good strategy. AMD knows that and the market will fluctuate depending on the values of these cryptocurrencies, however AI, Infinity Fabric and EMIB are the future.

Intel just understood how much AMD Infinity Fabric is a huge idea. It can reduce significantly the cost of production of complex chips with more simple ones and use the best technology available from third parties for different aspects, like GPU.

This is nothing more than good news, it means Intel is trusting AMD Vega core to be the best options for their project.

Its a good move for amd essentially even taking into account Intel are their primary 'enemy' .

They get their GPU soc into Intel low power laptops & also get their own entire soc into up & coming laptops running raven ridge (which looks in all honesty to have blinding specs for the power requirements)

They'll make money on virtually every device sold whether it be an intel or an amd CPU based one.

Its a win win situation.

Having an efficient GPU doesn't mean it has to be used for mining.

But if this efficiency translates into more hashes per watt then that is just icing on the cake.

For comparison:

http://www.legitreviews.com/amd-radeon-rx-vega-64-vega-56-ethereum-mining-performance_197049

The hashes per watt picture says it best

0.18 for Geforce 1070
0.13 for Vega 56 and Vega 64

Vega/Polaris is "huge at mining" pulling 32-34 Mh/s but it is also huge at gulping power using 100-160 more watts to achieve the same Mh/s.

I find it disgusting how Intel takes credit for AMD's HBM and HBM2.

AMD invented, founded and supported HBM : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=se9TSUfZ6i0

The presentation video from Intel doesn't show AMD's branding or logo anywhere and nor to the slides, despite AMD designing the 2 biggest chips on the package : HBM2 & GPU.

And then Intel claims : " we designed a new semi-custom graphics chip, which means this is also a great example of how we can compete and work together"

Some guy said it best :

"When it comes to graphics and semi-custom, you've designed squat. Failed. And spent a few billions on the failure."

#comebackoftheday

Intel even tagged the article with "Intel Graphics" TAG.

That's Intel Graphics only after you've enjoyed some medical cannabis :)

http://intel.ly/2zlxErg

And they give us a picture with a random guy with no AMD branding in the video, the article or the pictures.

Intel is the absolute worst.

Let alone the fact that Intel is now actually using "AMD GLUE" and liking it (for those that remember the AMD EPYC launch) .

Hannibal,
The VEGA GPU's won't be high frequency. The underlying design was originally mean for MOBILE anyway, then they cranked it up to high frequencies to make it a DESKTOP part... when they use frequencies closer to 1000MHz it should be fairly efficient.

AMD turned its first profits in three years thanks to Ryzen, Vega and RX4xx/5xx, not as desperate as it used to be. Since the only time where a company is affected by stock prices is when buying back or selling new shares to raise capital, changes in stock prices are of limited consequence to AMD.

As long as AMD gets a decent margin on those embedded semi-custom dies, it'd be foolish to pass on a sales opportunity. At 3X AMD's Raven Ridge TDP, Intel's chips clearly aren't in the same performance and power envelope as what AMD is aiming for, which means few to no lost sales in Intel's target segment. Raven Ridge will also be much cheaper than the Intel-AMD-Samsung/Hynix/Micron hybrid too.

What's the upside for AMD? Plenty.

This will establish the Radeon as the default GPU architecture to optimize for. And there's no IP agreement, so AMD is simply selling Intel semi-custom chips ... not the Radeon architecture.

For AMD it's a BIG win.

"This will establish the Radeon as the default GPU architecture to optimize for. And there's no IP agreement, so AMD is simply selling Intel semi-custom chips ... not the Radeon architecture."

Ditto this. This is potentially quite huge.

Who is the #1 graphics vendor for desktops and laptops right now? Hint its NOT nvidia...its also NOT amd.....its intel, with crappy integrated graphics. They are the worst graphics devices, and they are the most common. The most popular and lowest performing graphics chip needs the most optimization from developers. If that changes from intel to amd graphics ip, that means that all devs will spend the most time optimizing for amd not nvidia; where as currently amd gets the least attention from devs. That gives discrete gpus from amd a boost strictly through better optimization going forward.

Of course the above assumes, that the amd graphics ip replaces the intel graphics ip going forward in multiple products.

I just hope AMD negotiated a good deal.

-----------------

Could AMD potentially be shooting themselves in the foot? Well, if the market worked on pure merit alone, then raven ridge should take over the mobile market, and yes they would be shooting themselves in the foot. But thats not how the industry works. AMD has an uphill battle in getting vendors to put their chips in their product. Short term, this gets there chips into products much sooner then they would be able to otherwise. And that gives them a foot in the door. If they have to work with amd to make graphics work on their mobile products(radeon software to make the chips they are selling intel work), then they will be more willing to work with them with other hardware.

So Ryzen mobile coming, solid placement with Intel, plus discreet graphics like nVidia currently has in laptops, desktop CPU's and GPU's and BOTH major consoles...AMD is in a very good position right now. All they need is to get Nintendo to come over :)

They are really both small companies compared to the other giant software/hardware companies out there. Glad to see they are teaming up for a project

Intel has a Market cap of 218 billion.
AMD: 11 billion
Microsoft: 651 billion
Apple: 900 billion

Microsoft is 3 times larger than Intel.

Apple, probably the highest valued company on the planet, is only 4 times larger than Intel.

For comparison, Intel is nearly 20 times larger than AMD.

Of course, the word small is relative, but I tend to think of a multiple of 3 or 4 as small and a multiple of 10+ as a large.

Team work is still great to see.

With a 35-45w tdp for the h series, the Intel-AMD chip seems like top of the line. While raven ridge is 15w with an integrated Vega core, not dedicated mobile graphics(no info on the dedicated mGPU yet I think) . So I think the raven ridge will be more of a budget line up and the intel-amd would be the gaming/more expensive line up.
This is a win win/more market share for AMD.

People who know Intel's mobile processors are invariably garbage... and know Ryzen Mobile platforms finally stand a real chance of beating them on an even playing field :D

If you had any idea how much $ Nvidia was making off their bigger GPUs for deep learning and HPC, you wouldn't say that. AMD has been getting more serious about both of those markets, recently, so I don't think it's accurate to say they're not trying to compete, there.

The statement you recall was probably their admission that they weren't currently competitive in high-end desktop - not that there wasn't a lot of money to be made in the upper end of the GPU market.
