AMD X2 5000+ black edition ...cannot get over 2.9Ghz stably

For some reason, I can only get the multiplier to 15x (~3 GHz) to boot stably, but it will crash Crysis. I can only play the game stably at 14.5x, around 2.9GHz. I know this processor should go to 3.1GHz on stock voltage and everything, with only needing the multiplier at 15.5. My mobo is the Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe with the 1302 BIOS. Anyone know what's the problem? I have a feeling the voltages aren't set correctly as I had to clear the CMOS. CPU-Z reports my voltage as ~1.2V. But the BIOS shows it around 1.35V. Any ideas?

Hi there, I have exactly the same CPU, but I'm using the M2N32-SLI Deluxe WIFI with the 1603 BIOS.

Using auto VCore I got 3GHz out of the CPU and it showed as 1.35V, now I bumped it up to 1.4V (which shows as 1.44V) and I'm running 3.2GHz.

I'm actually using 12.5x, with bus at 256MHz.

Maybe you should just manually set the Vcore to 1.4, since you will need that for 3.2GHz. I'm using a Scythe Ninja Rev B (which isn't even that super) and the CPU reaches 60 degrees under Orthos.

But before I try, do you know if any AMD drivers such as the dual core optimizer, cool and quiet, etc. might have an effect?

WOOW that 5000+ is really good for overclock i wonder if the 6400+ black edition is good for overclock

not as good, from what i've read. the 5000+ has higher potential and is more efficient. yeah, the 6400+ could overclock higher, but the % gains aren't as good.

A good 5000+ BE OC would be like 3.4Ghz.

Increase voltage much, much higher. Like 1.5V

So you guys think my voltage is what the BIOS is reporting, the stock 1.35V, or the CPU-Z 1.2V? At 1.35V I should be able to reach 3.1GHz...right?

I have a small case with limited cooling and a Scythe Ninja Rev B as cooler, so the CPU would run too hot if I tried to go 3.4GHz, it's already doing 60 degrees under load as is.

Regarding Vcore, I go by what CPU-Z says or better, the Asus Probe utility. I bet your is struggling because of low Vcore. Is your PSU any good?

Anyway, 3.4GHz seems perfectly achievable with the right cooling/Vcore.

Yeah I've read the article and everything. I have a good Antec 500W PSU. PC Probe II reports 1.35V and CPU-Z reports 1.2V.

correction, the bios is version 1203.

also PC Probe II says:

Vcore: 1.35V
+3.3: 3.35V
+5.0: 5.11V
+12.0: 12.69V

Is this normal?

PSU: Antec SmartPower 500W Model SP-500.
17A on first 12V rail and 19A on the second.

Yeah, that is perfectly normal. You might want to raise the Vcore a bit though.

I didn't have much time to play with mine, but I was able to get it booting and running 3DMark06 at 3.2GHz at 1.34 Vcore, even though it would fail any CPU stress testing of more than 30mins.

Right now I'm around 1.37-1.38, but the Vcore is totally different from what I set on the BIOS and to increase of decrease I actually have to increase or decrease twice, very odd, maybe a BIOS problem or something.

So are you using the CPU-Z voltage as your reference, or are you using the BIOS? Because my BIOS voltage/PC Probe II voltage (I believe it draws from BIOS data) is generally about .18V higher than what CPU-Z reports.

I'm assuming you have the M2N-SLI Deluxe? what bios version?

I have a M2N32-SLI Celuxe, so not the same board. For me the BIOS voltage is actually the lowest one. AI Booster, PC Probe and CPU-Z all report the same, which is always +0.02V in comparisson with the BIOS.

I have a cooler master heatsink and fan, seem pretty good, as well as 3 case fans and 2 power fans.

i upgraded to vista x64 now and asus pc probe II doesnt work...don't have a cpu temp monitor atm.

Ive got a 5000BE as well on a DFI Infinity NF570SLI and I was able to get to 3ghz no sweat. Temps are around 46c under load. It sounds like a cooling issue to me. Im also using an Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 PRO.

Forgot to mention. I'm running 1.32vcore. When i was looking for a mobo i read that early M2N's had voltage problems with vcore and vdimm and a lot of people were having POST issues with 2.0v RAM as well as overclocking. Not a clue if a bios update fixed it or not.

Yeah, your voltage is your problem there. 1.375 is a bit low.

1.4v should be fine on that.

I have an x2 3800+ @ 2.6. Voltage is at 1.4 and PC Wizard/CPU-Z read it at anywhere between 1.4~1.45v. Totally stable. Raise your voltage to 1.4 and you should be able to get a stable 3.2 out of it.

My Opteron runs at 1.2 Volts at 2.7 Ghz and when i had it at 3.0 I had voltage at about 1.4 1.375 somewhere in there. you guys shouldnt need that much voltage with your brisbane core X2.

i have the same problem as well. i suspect its my rams fault. G.Skill 800 set for auto voltage. i hear upping that helps but i havent tried since the last lock up scared me. had to pull the reset jumper on the asus board that says you dont have to do that... yea that feature works well... lol

besides my asus board only goes to 1.9 max i think.

anything over 14.5 just flopps me. BSOD or worse. temps climb up real fast.
14.5 is rock sold and cold. i dont get it really. but lik i said, im chaliking it up to ram.

There's a few of us having similar trouble. FYI, voltage for G.Skill 800 RAM (per the G.Skill web site) is 1.8v - 1.9v. If you decide to change from "auto" to a specific voltage, I wouldn't go any higher than 1.9v. You might be able to raise your multiplier to 15 (3.0 Ghz) with 1.9v on your RAM.

Newegg lists this model as 1.8 - 2.0. so tonight i got bold and went for 3.0 again. raised ram to 1.9, cpu to 1.4 and set 15x. BSOD. set at the highest i could 1.95 ram (max allowed by mobo), 1.4 cpu , 15x muli... BSOD and pc wouldnt fire back up. ...go me. ram was hot enough to burn my fingers however chip was icey cold.

pulled the plug gave it a min and i got into safe mode, rebooted into regular back at auto , auto , 14.5x and everythign was golden.

honestly i feel the g.skill just can get over 2.91 and thats the limiting factor here.

What ram is everyone with the problem using?
