Hey im looking towards the future and I'm eyeing the AMD 8 core bulldozer CPU'S coming down the line. I'v seen some source say there going to use a AM3+ Socket and im wondering if that means youll be able to toss one in a current AM3+ compatible board?
Will my current http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130297&nm_mc=OTC-Froogle&cm_mmc=OTC-Froogle-_-Motherboards+-+AMD-_-MSI-_-13130297 msi 870A Fuzion work i noticed just now that its a AM3 not a AM3+ I'm guessing that means ill need a new mother board cause the sockets are comparable?

That "market" is no different from any other market. Not all software makes the best use of 24 cores - some of the tests in that link didn't even make use of 12 cores. How is a lower clocked 24 core server supposed to perform against a higher clocked 12 core server when the workloads are only optimised for 12 cores?

The result of this scaling is that for once, you can notice which CPUs have real cores vs. ones that have virtual (Hyper...
Thanks. Well this changes my assessment for my friend (The possibility of just perhaps flashing the ROM for a new vastly more powerful CPU (Bulldozer)).My friend said that he didn't mind changing the motherboard or later getting the newer upcoming CPU.
However if he could just obtain a motherboard capable of running AMD's future release Bulldozer CPU it would be preferable (more economical for him) to go that route instead although I think that getting a 6 core AMD Phenom II X6 1100T seems foolish right now.Perhaps I could talk him into getting a cheaper Athlon II X4 for around $100 instead (so he could at least have an operable system during the wait). Then when those FX-8000,6000,4000 CPU's come out after June 20th it will just be a simple CPU upgrade for him.

Correct me if im wrong, but AMD already stated AM3+ CPU's wont work in AM3 mobo's but AM3 CPU's will work in AM3+ mobo's.

Could it be, but why AMD will change the only advantage that has against Intel? Ivy bridge will comes out with SB support, so, i don't think that AMD don't want support different CPUs on AM3 mobos when Intel has plans to do it with SB and IB.

I also heard that AM3+ CPU's won't work on AM3 motherboards too.I remember that AMD John Fruhe (did I get the name right?) guy here mentioning this as well too. That's why initially I thought the Gigabyte motherboard I was looking at was so strange (with it's AM3+ CPU ready) until Lian noticed that the motherboard had a different socket on the same type motherboard (a newer revision (hardware-socket)) under its listed specifications.

We can all assume but there are no benches yet. I am upset about the late release, but if you continue to say SB will outdo BD without no benches, then it is safe to assume that BD has potential.

And, yes, AM3 Sockets will NOT Support any BD chips, yet AM3+ sockets will support Phenom II chips.

If you wait for BD your going to wait till Christmas by the looks of things. Even if BD drops SB by like 5% or something, who cares? SUPER AWSOME PC NOW or SUPER AWSOME PC +5% in 6 months? 5% isnt that great...

I really wanna support AMD (I'm all for the little guys) but postponing really doesnt do *** for AMD's fans...

Z68 chipset mobos should be out in May 8th to 14th,2011
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/z68-express-lucidlogix-virtu-ssd-caching,2888-7.html

about a month before the AMD Bulldozer release in June.
May is 2 months from now.June is 3 months from now so that's not really that far off in the future.
Perhaps it is to a youngster though.I don't see any story about a postponement here (unless it's proved otherwise).

That's why CPU design is left to the professionals....

I see your point. Might as well wait another month if you're already waiting two.

I was under the impression the Z68 is out in like a week or 2? If I am wrong then my bad, but still.

AMD has postponed BD how many times now? 2 months waiting for Z68 seems a hell of a lot better than waiting 3 months just to find out BD has been postponed again... I dont want to sound negative, but hell. Make a date and stick with it. I had to wait 3 months 3 months ago. So saying wait 3 months doesnt mean **** to me...

There has never been an official release date on Bulldozer so it hasn't really been postponed, but rumors have been flying around for ages from Q4 2010 to Q2 2011. Most referred to April but from the above link some say its June now. I've been hanging on to this $800 since Jan every month hoping, this is the month... Leave it to AMD to release something 10 days (June 20th, that's also JUST a rumor) before there Q2 2011 rumor expires...

If AMD made an official release date, that would perhaps encourage me to wait.

Bulldozer was scheduled to come out in Q2 and still is scheduled for Q2. I don't believe they ever expected it to come out sooner.

The Q2 release isn't a rumor; JFAMD is stating that it is a fact. So the rumor of June 20th could possibly be the release date of Bulldozer.

Ok i'm going with intel for my new build but maybe in 5 years i will use AMD again if they still excist.

Well $800 USD (if it is USD) will only get you part of the way unless you already have the other components (case and power supply ,OS etc.) or are building a inexpensive system (almost a budget build).Wait till you have $1,200 USD or more.If the 4 module BD (FX-8000) performs on par with the i7-2600K expect comparable competitive prices. If the higher end FX-8000's blows away anything Intel has $800 might possibly not get you a FX-8000 series CPU.

Could be but we will have to wait and see. Can't say until we see some legitimate benchmarks coming out in the next few months. If it does I'll build such a system for myself. My opinion is that once Intel gets their 22nm chips out AMD's CPU's will get behind again although it would be really great to see them have a thoroughbred top winner even if it's only for a short while.
