Hi guys can you test the 4870X2 against 2 GTX280? I know they are crazy expensive but I really want to see what kind of numbers can they post against 2 not 1 GTX280. Maybe 2 4870X2 against 3 GTX280 for some crazy benchmarks.

Best performing card you can buy?

doesn't seem that convincing. The older 9800X2 even beats it at various points:

Flight Simulator X:
"Nvidia's GTX 280 and 9800 GX2 both manage to outpace ’s offerings, including the Radeon 870 X2.

Call of Duty:
9800X2 is faster than 4870X2 at 1920x1080...

Test Drive Unlimited:
1920x1080,2560x1600: G280 faster than 4870x2...

World In Conflict:
1920x1080: 9800X2 beats the 4870X2...

Supreme Commander :
"With Supreme Commander, it’s neither the 4870 X2 nor the GTX280, but the GeForce 9800 GX2 that takes the first-place finish"

Unreal Tournament:
1920x1080: G280 beats the 4870X2..

Race Driver GRID:
1920x1080: 9800X2 beats the 4870X2..

-----
Noise:
Radeon 3870, 4870, 4870x2 under load all are noisier than the 9800X2 and G280..

Overclocking:
"Even at 800 MHz/1 GHz, the Radeon HD 4870 X2 not only failed to demonstrate palpable performance gains, but it also showed a slight slide in performance"

and why leave out the temperate and underplay the fact that nvidia will come out with a g280x2, likely at nvision08 or so is beyond my understanding of how tomshardware can keep up being objective.

Dear nickchalk,
Thank you for your comment. I hope that someone care for shopping, because here we evaluate the newest cards and show to each other its advantages and disadvantages. I wonder if you buy a new and powerfull video card shall you play under 4AA/4AF without other options or you will want more? Anyway you were useful to me, so I thank you.
Two questions to all of you people - is anyone capable to perform something under resolution 1920x1080 or 2560x1600? And which program or game exactly do you use under such resolution?

You can see the results of GTX SLI vs 4870X2 comaprison herehttp://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3372&p=1
Over at Hexus there is also a great review of this card

[citation][nom]gamerk316[/nom]How about some comparisions against SLI 280's? If an X2/GX2 Model card, it SHOULD preform faster than any non-SLI/CF solution. Instead, you are taking a dual card with built-in CF support, and not comparing it against SLI.Also, I would REALLY like to see how these preform in a ganme that can run in OpenGL, considering how badly ATI preformed the last time a high end openGL game was tested (Doom III)[/citation]

Yes... and let's also compare single cores in Core 2 Quad against single core CPUs as well.

Like multi CPUs multi GPUs are here to stay. Get over with it :)

What should be compared are power requirements, noise and performance per watt. I don't care if hardware iten NNN has got 1 or 16 cores - as long as it performs as expected :)

[citation][nom]NightLight[/nom]all this talk about winning in high resolutions... focus on resolutions that people actually _use_ . also, i must agree with vorador. let's see how it performs with AA and all the perks turned on. about power: if you buy a high end card, are you really interested in how much power it consumes? I mean, you just bought a 600$+ card. I hope nvidia strikes back soon, let's see a war, so prices can drop for the consumer [/citation]

Just because you don't own a Full HD TV or a 23+ inch monitor capable of such resolutions that doesnt mean noone does.
You do know what Highend means?
Whats the point of buying a highend card if you dont have a screen to fuly utilize it.
I play on a sony 46w2000 and play Call Of Duty 4 ,Supreme Commander ,Quake Wars, Company Of Heroes , World in Conflict and Guild Wars all at 1920x1080.
If your gonna play at lower resolutions then reviewed here you shouldnt even be interested in buying an HD4870X2 unless you want to go for braggin rights or desperately need to get rid of your money in which case I'd be more then happy to relieve you of it as I'm saving for LN2 cooling for my QX9650 and an additional 30 inch screen with native 2560x1600 :).
But perhaps you are right about including the scores for lower resolutions just to help people make a better decision on their next purchase.

Ya this review is kinda lacking. The numbers don't even match other reviews, espcially GRID. Maybe this had something to do with the issues stated at the beginning of the article, or maybe the review is indeed crappy as pulasky stated, and was subsquently stamped out by user ratings. I'll laugh if the same happens to me.

One of the previews (about a month ago) I thought mentioned this saying they were pretty sure they fixed the issue.... But I don't quite remember off the top of my head.

OK, let it be known that I could care less which camp is winning as long as I have a fast card. I have flip flopped between the two companies multiple times as their performance crown has flipped multiple times.

Everybody is glowing about this card but are people really impressed that it takes AMD/ATI two cores to match / beat the performance of a single core Nvidia product?

Ok, well, I would get a GTX 280 over the X2 because of price of the X2 and power of the GTX 280. But, I think I still would go with a 4870 at 200-300 dollars.

Thanks just ordered 1 so I will find out soon enough if they are right about it beeing fixed. :)

@Wheat_Thins
I'm not an ATI fanboy in fact every card ive ever owned was a Nvidia Infact despite owning a CrossfireX MB up untill yesterday I was still undecided about picking up a GTX280 or a 4870X2.
As for the multi core vs single core debate.
I couldnt care less about howmany cores they need.
Aslong as it performs better and is in a similar price range yes then I am impressed.

Who cares as long as its one card and gets the job done. ATI and Nvidia are using different approachings to achieve the same result. It's kind of like trying to get the most h.p. out of an engine. I can increase cubic inches (size) or make a smaller engine more effiecient (such as turbocharging).

I went with Asus because of the price it was chealer then the Sapphire which was my 2nd choice
I have no idea whats in the bundle but Asus usually does a good job.

Its amazing that they say its better when the best most polished card on the high end market is neither the 280 or the 4870x2, it's clearly the 9800GX2. The price is much lower and real gamers who drop 600+ $$$ on video cards better be running a 30" at 2560' X 1600', or multi-monitor setups. If your not your wasting your money on these cards.

Now put all that on the table and run these cards on a 790I setup and compare the benchmarks then. The X38 clearly is not going to support the NVidia cards nearly as well as the 790I and we all know that. The 9800GX2 has SSC versions that come with warranties and are clocked to destroy the stock 9800GX2 with warranty! So add that the 9800GX2 stock runs tit for tat the 4870X2 with no overclocking, and is polished card. Then if you just want to destroy the 4870x2 buy the SSC version of the 9800GX2 and its done and with warranty and by professionals.

I hate how every site on the net when doing the new ATI or NVIDIA card puts the card vs the other on the new cards favorable chipset to cater to the newcomer. The 280 is a flop unless you do video, and the 4870X2 is lackluster for the price. The 9800GX2 is hands down the best card this year to date. (Value + performance + available + polished)

I care.....

What about power consumption and noise levels? I'm impressed when a Skyline with 6 cylinders with twin turbos hits 900+ HP. Now I'm not really impressed when it takes 12 cylinders sucking down 15 liters of gas intake. to make the same HP. Now since power requirements were ignored in this article (WTF?) its hard to say if this is the case. When somebody can hit 100HP+ per liter of intake like the new ZR1 Corvette, now that impresses me.

Wheat_Thins - I agree with most off what you are saying. My point is number of chips/cores is inconsequential. What matters if it gets the job done. That can be measured in frame rate, power consumption, noise level, etc. It's the results that matter not the approach a manufacturer uses to get those results.
