Re i850 canon printer...
Can anyone advise me what the grid patterns mean and how to decipher them.
Am unable to get any help from the ptr manual nor Canon website. Appreciate
any help. Thanks.

The lines should all be present and with no 'gaps'. The colors should all
look 'correct' to your eye.
