Anand must be smoking crack or has his head stuffed into his anus. The reason is that he's not taking into effect things we discussed in the past...Pixel Shader 2.0 and Floating point precision. The review that calls this in to play is <A HREF="http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.html?i=1896" target="_new">http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.html?i=1896</A>.

I've noticed some things that are wacky, but before we get into the meat and potatoes...lets take a look at some things others have seen (i.e. numbered 1-6 and from Ion and speeduk). Then I'll give some of my thoughts and the cold hard facts toward the end (points 7,8).

1. Anyway read it carefully, Tomb raider didnt have fps graph it had some dodgy frame lost while using PS2.0 graph. IMO, anandtech will mislead a lot of people by using those graphs <b>Ion</b>

2. they used unreleased driver for benchmark(which i remember they said they never will after that GF4 fisco) <b>Ion</b>

3. the images were not captured in a way that truely reflect cards' rendering within game, eg. they capture those dark and outdoor area...Even worse, some of the most important FULL SIZE images had BROKEN links, halo was the one stand out. <b>Ion</b>

4. All the screenshots are identical. I mean every one is like its been produced from the same card. No differences in lighting or anything. Surely there should be at least a difference in lighting on some of the screenshots? <b>speeduk</b>

5. the MS Flight Simulator game has been removed???? That was the game where the ATI cards got 125fps and the 5900 got 27fps???? Why remove a game and not test I.Q on it when its one of the games Nvidia suffers most on. Surely we want to see if the ATI cards have lower I.Q in this game ?? <b>speeduk</b>

6. Nvidia still cannot do Floating Point 2.0 Textures (as noted first <A HREF="http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.html?i=1896&p=37" target="_new">line</A> of this page in Anands article). Most people do not know what pixel shading (2.0) and FP is...So here's some info on what they do: The algorithms implemented at the pixel processing stage (where the DX9 Standard includes PS2.0/Floating Points) include bump mapping, shadowing, environment mapping, and lighting (e.g. reflection, fog, etc.)...IN FACT, they (PS2.0/FP) don't really effect AA or AF directly...they use shading techniques (utilizing color pixels) to provide depth of field, textures, bumps, blips, ridges, etc. So, interestingly enough...Nvidia still can't do this even with the 52.14 Dets. What up with that? They no likey the DX9 <b>STANDARD?</b>.

7. Why is Anand even comparing benchmarks if PS 2.0 can't be enabled? DX9 MUST HAVE PS 2.0 enabled to be DX9 at all. I mean, it's like Carl Lewis running a 100 meter dash against a person in a wheelchair. One doesn't even use his legs (or in our case, PS 2.0). It is damn ridiculous. Someone over at Anands should have their head examined. In fact, Nvidia cards shouldn't even be included when speaking of DX9...<i>because</i> they <b>ARE NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THE STANDARD. PERIOD.</b> When Nvidia finally sprouts a pair and steps up to the DX9 plate...then lets talk benchmarks. <b>Until then, they are sacrificing quality in order to perform.</b> I'd feel lied to if I had an FX series card...no matter how hard Nvidia tries to polish it up, it's still a turd...it's only going to get buffed and become a shinier turd. I wonder how long they will have people snowed over in believing that they are DX9 capable. It seems they've been able to for a few months now. WAKE UP EVERYONE....we should all be performance junkies not ATI or NVIDIA junkies...I know I am. <b>TKS</b>

8. The bottom line of things are that Anand is trying to say that (and I <A HREF="http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.html?i=1896&p=60" target="_new">quote</A>): "The new 52.14 drivers are much better than either the 51.xx or the 45.xx series. The image quality issues are corrected from 51.xx, and a lot of speed has been inked out over the 45.xx drivers. We have actually been very impressed with the speed, <i>image quality</i>, and playability enhancements we have seen." (my emphasis, not anands). Impressed with the image quality improvement? Where? There is no improvement period from a PS 2.0/FP precision standpoint...and this is where Nvidia is lacking...this is what is causing all the fuss...yet they've improved? That's like saying, hey, I know you didn't beat Carl Lewis in the 100 meters Mr. Handicap person...but you shaved .5 seconds off your time!! woo hoo! It just doesn't make any sense...Nvidia is still on DX8.1 and IS NOT up to par with the standard.

If I were Microsoft, I'd prosecute for altering the DX9.0 code (which Nvidia's drivers do...they 'enable' mixed mode instead of fully rendering PS2.0 stuffs). Anyone that can't see the error of Nvidia needs to first, pry the rock off themselves cause they've been living under it for too long and second, pull their head outta their arses...cuz the facts stick. If I hold up a red colored pen and tell you it's red...but you say it's blue...you come off sounding and looking like a total moron...if you continue to support a video card that doesn't do what they've claimed it could do and doesn't meet the DX9 standard...you come off sounding and looking the same.

You want a true test for Floating Point? Go <A HREF="http://www.ixbt.com/video2/images/ps-precision/PSPrecision13.zip" target="_new">here</A> and use it. This test ignores Nvidia's drivers' request to enable only partial (12-16bit) FP precision and uses DX9 24bit The source of the download is <A HREF="http://www.digit-life.com/articles2/ps-precision/" target="_new">digit-life</A>; it was an article with John Carmack talking about FP and PS 2.0 and how Nvidia isn't up to microsoft DX9 specs regarding the issue. Good read but a bit technical...you can pick out the simple stuff though as they are good to give in to laymans terms.

Enough is enough people. Nvidia is still lying to us. As of today...<A HREF="http://www.nvidia.com/page/techbriefs111802.html" target="_new">Nvidia tech data</A> still states PS 2.0+ compliant with the FX 5900. It isn't. They're lying and the proof is purely evident. If they make it so today that 24-32bit comes into play with a new driver, I'll go ahead and clap for them and say good job guys...you're DX9 compliant now and then I'll go purchase a 5950...but until then, we cannot ignore things and pretend that there is no fault here. What they are doing is robbing people by selling a product that is handicapped. It isn't right and they shouldn't be getting away with it.

Great post.

Honestly my top two sites for info (THG and Anandtech) are losing credibility with me hand over fist lately, and I'm not sure which of the other sites are all that credible either.

I'm just glad I have kept up with things in the tech world because if I wasn't in the know I would probably fall for these articles hook, line and sinker.

Tom's is probably the most accurate and unbiased site on the internet for getting your reviews, I suggest you go there, <A HREF="http://www.tomshardware.com" target="_new">http://www.tomshardware.com</A>

The Part I found the most entertaining (since you ruined the surprise of sooo much! :tongue: ) was this statement when discusing the performance in UT2K3 4xAA/8XAF ;

<i>This time we see ATI pull ahead of the NVIDIA cards. No doubt the extra memory bandwidth the 9800XT received from its higher memory clock has contributed to these numbers.</i>

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the FX5900U (and the FX5950) have 4-5+ Gb/s (23.4 v 27.2/28.8) more bandwidth?
And the FX's memory is clocked faster as well.

Either terrible wording or outright decepton, 'well of course the ATI is doing better, cause our SPONSOR is at a distinct disadvantage, in our opinion'.

I didn't like the overall feel of the review. The lack of CAT 3.8s while the presence of these ultra rare 53.XX drivers is used. CG path versus normal HLSL DX9 path, to help out the nV cards. There are these known issues with the nV cards, but uh-oh we found one issue with the ATI cards (that Bioware has made a patch for [since even Anand says the game was optimized for nV hardware]), we hope that ONE issue isn't a sign of the evil serpent of the past rearing it's head (while ignoring the nV Hydra slowly constricting Anand).'

Not impressed, I will once again need someone else coming up with similar results to give this review any credibility.

They're just playing the part of Pied Piper, reporting the news the way the majority of readers wants to read it. You see what's happening with Tom's, whenever a site shows some journalistic integrity in reporting news that flys in the face of preconceptions, thousands of people try to shoot them down. Anandtech realizes that the majority of readers WANT nVidia, AMD, and VIA to win, so they're simply shifting their methods a bit to insure that will happen.

not to mention the fact that NV35 still beats NV38 in some tests...... well u never know~ let's just wait for the new drivers to come out before we make any decision. NV40 is their last chance. If they f*** that up, i'm going pro-ATi~

Yeah, I understand, and I want more info. Personally I'm not going nV until AFTER NV40 and ONLY if they stop the monkey business that bothers me personally. I hope that the DET 52.XXs bring the performance and IQ that FX owners paid for, but I still don't like recent history.

If other reviews discredit this review, then I will look at Anand in the same light. I didn't like their initial review that didn't do IQ comparisons, it was very much a PR thing IMO where it was released just when the R9800XT was released. At the moment all of Anand's review is Vapourware.
ATI's is oldnews with the CAT 3.8s (stability + features over performance) and that's all stuff availible now.

Oh well once again time will tell. Speaking of whihc I don't think Anand nor nV really want anyone to give them that time-machine.

if the new DET are what Anand said they are. ATi should be panicing real bad. in the review it said that the Cg compliers can give out good performance in games even if the drivers aren't optimized for them, unlike ATi. If that is true..... then ATi could be in big trouble when the NV40 releases

Yeah but the game has to allow for a CG codepath, which TR does. CG won't work on the majority of games, regardless of drivers. So I wouldn't expect that situation all the time, especially since more people are moving away from anything to do with CG and sticking primarily to standard HLSL stuff.

Two things:
1)It only brings the FX up to speed, doesn't make it superior. In fact, in this review, the ATI XT is finally flexing itself since Anand switched to the best gamer CPU, the FX-51.
2)So they are using the compilers, ok. If I am not mistaken, it still isn't "programming for Cg", no? I mean, Cg never picked up even with its features. Basically I am perceiving the Cg has a good execution codepath so they're exploiting it. But are they even using Cg's real visual features? Wish Dave could explain the difference between both if there is one.

I thought according to Beyond3D that they were using the CG codepath and it was only in TR that it was being used in Anand's review. I guess I need to re-read one or the other.

I would now but I'm watching West Wing with the GF, gotta run.

CIAOLA, enjoy the new CATs, they work well for me, and I never got the impression that they would increase performance, I always expected simply an overhaul. I think people read into what Cat-Maker said at Rage3D forums.

Anywhooo, gotta run. Later.
