Didn't have one myself, but at the time there was a local dialup BBS
dedicated for console (SNES/Genesis) playing. The BBS was just mainly
message forums for consoles. Obviously, you connected to the BBS with a
computer and terminal program -- not with the Xband modem and console. It
seemed very popular at the time though. There were forums mainly used to
coordinate game playing and "tournaments" with local users that subscribed
to the XBand service. There were also many discussion on various hardware
and software hacks. One particular project, I seem to recall, replacing
one of the chips in the Xband modem with a chip that had "homebrew software"
that allowed the Xband modem to be used to directly connect with another
player without having to use the Xband service. (Had a bunch of other
features too.) If you didn't want to use the vanilla default "homebrew
software", it seemed that this software was customizable as well, with a
PC -- as they had software dedicated to such. After configuring your own
software, obviously it had to be be chipped. There were contact numbers
listed for several people in the US that, for a nominal free, would burn
your customized image onto a ROM for you. I kept up with the messages for
a short period as I was interested in getting the modem and being part of
the fun, but it all seemed to fade away within a year or so.
