According to this guide
http://screenarchery.wikia.com/wiki/Downsampling_%E2%80%93_A_full_guide_to_achieve_3840x2160_resolution_%E2%80%93_NVIDIA_only
you can make your lower resolution monitor output a higher resolution image with downsampling.
What I'm particularly interested in is to be able to use say 1440p on a 1080p monitor, or 1080p on a 720p monitor. Not only for games but for some desktop work as well. I know the text is going to look blurry, but more space seems to be worth it.
Edit: sorry, the question is, can you confirm you can do that and how is the experience?
