So Apple once again goes for the bling and/or wow factor. Then after handing of the cash for the "cool hey look at me" phone it has scratches on it before you even use it and then they blame anyone but themselves. Nice. Did they not test thing first or perhaps even learn a lesson from the past?

Didn't aluminum backed phones go out back in the original Razr days? I loved that phone but the backing did have some scratches. Of course that was after some use and it did not come that way; and I did not pay hundreds of dollars for it either and it worked perfectly.

Very typical. Extremely shitty quality, backed by simple discount. Oh that, well it's aluminum, it's supposed to get all scratched up and look like shit. Owners of other more scratch resistant products should be envious. If only one day a week after ownership could we all look to our new products and be great-full that they are scratched to shit and look like ass.

There will be a new model in 6 months for every apple-struck fan to buy and most of these non-biodegradable, hugely expensive, fashion statements will end up in a landfill near you. So what's the harm really?

everybody buys rubberised protective cases for their iPhones that look really crap. I really don't know why they don't come with rubberised protective cases in the first place and give people what they need. Oh ya... People are not buying what they need. My bad.

Eh, kids (and some adults) pay like $80 for a pair of jeans with holes and faded color these days. Why not pay $500 for a scratched up iphone? Yo it's hip man!

[citation][nom]kinggremlin[/nom]You're not going to break the phone by scuffing the back side of it. The woman in the above clip saying the phone was "destroyed" because it had some scratches on the back is an idiot. If the screen scratches easily, that's a problem. If the back of the phone does, who cares? There are a lot of things to dislike Apple about, but I don't see why this is a big deal. If you want your phone to look new two years from now, buy a case for it and don't put it in the same pocket you have your keys in. It really isn't that hard to not tear up your phone with normal use if you take common sense precautions.[/citation]

Could be wrong but I think she was more worried about the Dent in it. Scratches and scuffs are not that big a deal but dents are HUGE. That child was really able to put even a small ding in the back of that case then it tells me scratches are the least of your worries. As far as being more durable then the glass if it dents easily its just as useless as protection.

Think about it being in your pocket with keys, your wearing tighter jeans you sit down the keys push into the back of the phone. That phone dents there is a good possibility something could short out or be broken.

Hey each there own I will personally keep my Android it does everything I-Phone does + offers Navigation and 4G service.

[citation][nom]syrious1[/nom]some idiot actually tried to say that the scuffs and scratches are okay since you put a case on it anyway. Anodized Aluminum does not scratch easily if the coating is applied thoroughly and not just once like it sounds. GG Apple and Foxconn[/citation]

I disagree. My Colt scratched up pretty easily. Not that I cared, since it is a tool and not a pretty thing to put on the self, but it does scratch. And I am sure the Colt is tougher than some wimpy smart phone.

WFT is wrong with Apple?? More stupid Form over Function. It was bad enough that all the iPod backs scratch to hell super easy since they debuted. But isn't there a way to make a thin, light piece of tempered Stainless Steel? Think Gorilla Steel ;-). Jeeze, we just landed on freaking Mars for cryin' out loud!

[citation][nom]nbelote[/nom]What? It scratches easily and/or comes prescratched? That's a new feature![/citation]

This is Apple's new design feature for the iPhone. It gives the user an opportunity to customize his or her brand new iPhone with a personal touch. No 2 users will have the same exact user customization on the back of their phones. In fact, I will patent this feature and sue the next phone design that uses a "customizable protective casing." Except mine will cover all materials from plastic to glass to paper to wood to aluminum to rubber. I will sue anyone who designs a phone that has a scratchable back plate.

LoL, introducing with a micron-fitting marketing blah-blah story, like it's some kind of Formula 1 engine... And then it seems to scratch easier then dj shadow. Way to go Apple.

I guess I'll stick with the plastic style that people are so apt to criticize in every tech review.

For some reason I don't have any blemishes on my two-year old "plasticky-feeling" phone.

[citation][nom]CaedenV[/nom]Yes, it is normal for aluminum products, which is why hardly anyone makes painted aluminum phones anymore. It was a fad that washed out a while back because it messes with reception, scratches easy, is more expensive and heavy than plastic, etc.But it does feel nice, and it looks good while not scratched... and that is what Apple is good for; that initial WOW factor when you first buy it which must wear off within the year or so that it takes to push a new product to market.[/citation]

I have a Nokia E7, aluminium, it doesn't have any visible scratches (on the aluminum) after multiple drops on multiple surfaces ( including asphalt ). Apple has just once again saved on the cost of parts and manufacturing ( pretty sure their screen are still less resistant than the Gorilla Glass used in all other high end phones ). I honestly don't know why they are considered premium ( imo, price alone isn't enough for that ).

edit: after looking into it a bit more, it seems iPhone 5 does indeed now have a gorilla glass screen.

Reminds me of the worn look blue jeans that are already ripped up with holes in them. Apple is kind of saying be glad you bought the blue jeans with holes in them even know they are not as functional as non-ripped jeans, they wont last as long and they cost more but hey your cool.

You think Steve Jobs would be ok with that, he'd smack them for making such a blatent mistake, it's not good enough for apple, apple has become synonymous with quality ... and already falling back into the fold. Why would they use aluminum to begin with when the glass ones were working beautiful.

I had an LG Shine for 3 years. It was a flip phone with a full aluminum shell. I just pulled it out of our junk drawer now to look at it and it barely has any marks on it at all. I've also had other devices/products with aluminum casings and they're still in great shape as well. So no, it's not "Normal".

Why didnt they just use a good plastic, instead of cheap anodized coke can Aluminum? Plastic is resistant to denting, and not easy to scratch if it is textured.
