I'm just saying what intel will see. "mom and dad" heard about pentium, they maybe even owned one too years ago. That is why Pentium is the new low-end branding instead of Celeron.

In 5 years time you'll probably see 'i7' or 'nehalem' branding the lowest garbage intel can produce. It's marketing intel-style. Although sad sycophants will attach themselves to a particular brand/model/cpu, intel will use it and ditch it once it is past it's worthwhile cash-generating life.

Pentium was once the flagship, now it's reduced to the bottom of the barrel - only good for selling the worst chips that fall off the edge of wafers. This is the intel way.

The funny thing is, AMD reincarnated Athlon at the same time. Brands huh?

With the recession businesses have postponed their upgrade cycles. Intel seems perfectly poised to cash in bigtime on the rebound, since the overall system costs will probably be lower.

Also I find it quite funny that Intel got fusion at least a year before AMD will 😛...

If you look at the TWO DIES under the cover, you will see a DISTINCT SEPARATE 45nm IGP.

This isn't even a 32nm product.

I think what Jenny is getting at is that it's the middle-aged people who mostly remember the "Intel Inside" P4 TV ads (hell even I remember them, not that I knew what a P4 or an Intel was at the time). AMD rarely if ever mass advertises, and certainly not on TV. Have you seen talking AMD processors?

Part of the issue is now there are more things that impact performance significantly. It used to be that clockspeed was the biggest indicator, then it was clockspeed and cache, now clockspeed, cache, and cores are all being used.

AMD's naming is pretty simple, Phenom II vs. Athlon II is just L3 cache, X# is # of cores, and clockspeed is just the higher number.

Intels approach is confusing mostly because of the Core i5 750. Otherwise i7 = 4core/8thread + Turbo, i5 = 2c/4t + Turbo, and i3 = 2c/4t + no Turbo. But, of course, we have the funny i5 750 which is 4c/4t + turbo. The dual-socket thing is kinda funny, too.

No it goes like this:

i7 = 6c/12t or 4c/8t + Turbo
i5 = 4c/4t + Turbo 7xx+
i5 = 2c4t + Turbo 6xx and lower
i3= 2c/4t no Turbo

i7 920 + LGA 1366
i7 860 - LGA 1156

Its not too hard. But I do miss the Core 2 Duo/Quad naming. Easy.

At least a higher number means better. 980 > 920 965 > 945 ect.

What you say is amazingly true in some disadvantaged countries - you could show them a monstrous AMD sys, and beside it a Pentium IV 1700mhz sys, and they would choose the early P4 - all they know is p4 p4 p4 - it has to be p4 or they don't want it. Show them a 790Fx w a 965 and 5870, and you need to hold them at gunpoint to force them to accept it. p4 p4 p4 I want p4 p4 p4.

Um Athlon is now low end for quad and dual cores. How is that any different from Intels Pentium becoming the low end now?

Yea they do. But still its funny to watch double sided views. Some people a bit ago were linking the AMD YouTube marketing as gospel.... some the same who get angry when comparing the lower priced AMD dual core to Intels dual core.

I think performance in cores, power and price matter.

I have heard a AMD inside commercial, cant remember the OEM tho, as Ive been busy each time its been on TV
