Background Information
My rig was running perfectly for about 2 or so years, then out of the blue, Windows 7 started randomly freezing for no apparent reason.
I thought maybe the system drive was the problem as I had noticed that the computer was running a lot slower than usual. I started a defrag on C drive and the computer froze in the middle of it.
I reset my system. It booted, however the onboard raid configuration got blown as 2 of the drives in my RAID5 went offline. There was no option to rebuild the RAID5 since 2 of 3 drives were out. I broke the RAID5 and created another. This resulted in the loss of all my data, which is a problem for another day.
My computer kept right on freezing randomly, so I tried to run a defrag again. I should have learned my lesson last time but the random freezing was driving me insane.
Well, it froze again. I did another reset. This time the computer basically told me to smeg off and refused to POST or even allow access to BIOS.
Troubleshooting Steps Taken
1. Cleared CMOS several times.
2. Reseated all memory sticks.
3. Removed all memory sticks but 1, then tried to boot using each memory stick by itself.
4. Tried booting with dual memory configuration.
5. Swapped out my video card.
In all steps above, I was getting debug error 62, chipset initialization error.
6. Took out all PCI cards, except video card.
In this step, I got error 99.
7. Put the original video card back.
Error 99 persisted.
8. Put all cards back in.
It reverted back to error 62.
Research Done
I ran a search in all computer tech forums, on microsoft.com and the Internet in general. I did all troubleshooting steps suggested in posts that were similar enough to my issue.
I then found at least 2 posts that suggested a bad motherboard.
Conclusion
I strongly suspect that it is indeed the motherboard giving me all these migraines.
My Question to You
Now, before I go and blow about $180 on a replacement motherboard, I wanted to get an opinion from a group of more experienced experts.
If you were in the same position, would your conclusion be the same as mine? Did my motherboard finally kick the bucket?
