Background Information

My rig was running perfectly for about 2 or so years, then out of the blue, Windows 7 started randomly freezing for no apparent reason.

I thought maybe the system drive was the problem as I had noticed that the computer was running a lot slower than usual. I started a defrag on C drive and the computer froze in the middle of it.

I reset my system. It booted, however the onboard raid configuration got blown as 2 of the drives in my RAID5 went offline. There was no option to rebuild the RAID5 since 2 of 3 drives were out. I broke the RAID5 and created another. This resulted in the loss of all my data, which is a problem for another day.

My computer kept right on freezing randomly, so I tried to run a defrag again. I should have learned my lesson last time but the random freezing was driving me insane.

Well, it froze again. I did another reset. This time the computer basically told me to smeg off and refused to POST or even allow access to BIOS.

Troubleshooting Steps Taken

1. Cleared CMOS several times.
2. Reseated all memory sticks.
3. Removed all memory sticks but 1, then tried to boot using each memory stick by itself.
4. Tried booting with dual memory configuration.
5. Swapped out my video card.

In all steps above, I was getting debug error 62, chipset initialization error.

6. Took out all PCI cards, except video card.

In this step, I got error 99.

7. Put the original video card back.

Error 99 persisted.

8. Put all cards back in.

It reverted back to error 62.

Research Done

I ran a search in all computer tech forums, on microsoft.com and the Internet in general. I did all troubleshooting steps suggested in posts that were similar enough to my issue.

I then found at least 2 posts that suggested a bad motherboard.

Conclusion

I strongly suspect that it is indeed the motherboard giving me all these migraines.

My Question to You

Now, before I go and blow about $180 on a replacement motherboard, I wanted to get an opinion from a group of more experienced experts.

If you were in the same position, would your conclusion be the same as mine? Did my motherboard finally kick the bucket?

Solution
''Well, I can't boot off a CD as it doesn't give me access to the boot menu'' then you say ''Obviously, it can't be the motherboard since it was replaced and has a newer BIOS dated in March 2016.
''

to me it is the board or that bios is bad ??

I wound look at why you cant access and use the bios as normal and by default as you should them 2 things right there aint right at the get go . I can access my bios and boot to device I want to at any time through the bios set up or tapping F11 to choose first boot form whats listed weather a hard drive , usb stick or dvd /cd .. [asrock z87]

you know if the windows drive was going bad and things got corrupt it may load the chipset drivers and all bad with that error 62

61 - 91 Chipset initialization error. Please press reset or clear CMOS

what I would try is a bootable dvd of Linux and see how it does ?

You can download the Linux Mint operating system for free. It comes as an ISO file
which you need to burn to a blank DVD. The liveDVD is then bootable and provides a
fully-functional operating system which you can try without affecting your PC. In
layman's terms, when you put Linux Mint on a DVD and place it into your computer, you
can try it out while leaving your current system intact

https://www.linuxmint.com/documentation/user-guide/Cinnamon/english_17.3.pdf

with that dvd I would remove everything but the gpu or at least all the hard drives

just seems to me some one had this and ended up being a bad hard drive ? any way see if it will boot to the Linux dvd desktop ?

may not be the issue but something to try , cant hurt to see

let me know how they treat you on that I got 3 asrocks myself and would like to get some input on there customer service .. the one time I inquired to them they were helpful and resolved ??? [maybe I got lucky that day ?? ]

I wonder with all the heat issues with am3+ /amd board on the chipsets if that come in to play as time goes buy my last am3+ 990fx seem like you could light a cigarette off them - my buddies son has your same board with a 9370 in it

maybe you be like this guy ??

I have a feeling that heat might have been part of the cause. The rig started freezing right when the weather got warm. I usually have an A/C on in the office but I was trying to save on the electric bill so I didn't turn it on.

*sigh*

I hope my experience with ASRock customer service is like the other guy's. It would be awesome to get a replacement that quick.

In either case, I'll report back as to what my experience with them is.

have you googled that asrock chipset initialization error. around ?

could be something simple as this or maybe like the psu failing in the heat as well ?? thing is with electronics parts any small or sill thing can effect everything in some way ?

''Any chance you can test the CPU in someone else's system? --- Well, new CPU just got here, and voila, it posts! Just to be sure it wasn't some anomaly, once the system posted, I switched CPU's and tried again. Failed (as expected). Put the new one back in, and it works again. So I successfully narrowed it down to CPU failure

Junkeymonkey, I got my mobo back from ASRock. No questions asked, they just sent me a replacement. Still getting same code 62 and no post.

Would using a Hirens boot CD work as well as a Linux boot CD?

Well, I can't boot off a CD as it doesn't give me access to the boot menu. I removed the pci-e RAID card and it reverted to error 99. I tried replacing the video card with a newer spare card I have, still error 99.

Next, the video card had always been in slot pci-e3, which is the middle one of 3 pci-e x16 slots. I tried changing the video card slot from pci-e3 to pci-e4, same code 99. After that, I tried switching it to slot pci-e1, still same code 99.

So, video card alone gives error 99 and if I reinstall the RAID card in the only pci slot, it gives error 62.

Obviously, it can't be the motherboard since it was replaced and has a newer BIOS dated in March 2016.

I'm out of ideas to try. Does anyone have an idea of what's going on or have any further troubleshooting suggestions?
