Athlon Underclocking?

Hello - Im a keen overclocker but due to money restraints I havn't been able to in a while!

I'm considering buy an AMD Athlon with a Barton core @ 333fsb.

Now I have DDR333 Corsair Memory which I have been using for a while now with a 133fsb athlon 1.4ghz and an old epox mobo.

Silly questions coming up so please excuse them!

I know my board is capable of overclocking to 166fsb as it's been running so for nearly a year now - I also know its compatible with the newer athlons - the question is like to ask is will it boot up a 166fsb barton at 133fsb (ie underclocked) until i can get into the bios and sort it all out? or will it simply not boot up? I don't know if these processors can run at 133 or if they *must* have a 166fsb board (which i will be getting when funds allow!)

Thanks for any help you can give

I tried to get a 133 chip to work in my old 100 fsb board. It booted once to the same settings as the old chip. I tried to change the settings, and it would not boot again.
My understanding is if the chip aint in the bios it just does not work.

I'm pretty sure that you can underclock the Barton using a lower FSB. I mean a million people have been underclocking their AXPs to a 100MHz FSB purely by mistake, so why shouldn't a Barton be underclockable to a 133MHz FSB, right? :)

Well funny but i am in a similar situation.
Just bought an Athlon xp 2800 and installed it in a Ga-7vaxp Giga-byte mobo.(via kt400 chip)
I still use my old pair of Kingston 512 Mb ddr Rams at 266.
my message in start screen says that it is a 2200 xp +.
Do i have to change the ram and go to DDR 333 or did I make something wrong.?
I 've tried and I changed the cpu frequency from 133 up to 156 and I 've seen in start screen 2500+ xp.System crashed
a few minutes later.
bios updated already...
any clues please ???

Firstly, you need PC2700 RAM (DDR333) and then once you have got that put your FSB upto 166 in the BIOS. Or if you want poor performance but cant be arsed to buy new RAM, set the appropriate divider in the bios so that your RAM will run at 133 and your FSB 166 (if this option is available).
