Hello, and thanks for your help. I recently upgraded my computer to Windows 8 (a clean install), and was updating all of my drivers. Everything was going fine until I got to the drivers for my Crossfire 6870/6850 graphics cards. During the installation of the latest (13.1) catalyst drivers, my screen flashes as normal during a driver update, but then freezes on a black screen. On a hard restart I get a BSOD on atikmpag.sys. This issue also occurred on windows 7 with anything past the 12.11 drivers. I tried manually installing the drivers in safe mode, which works but still BSODs on a restart. The most progress I've made was getting to my desktop with the 13.1 drivers manually installed, but the BSOD occurred after a restart. I'm not overclocking anything. Thanks in advance.

Specs:
Windows 8
AMD Phenom II x6 1075T (stock)
Crossfire HD6870/6850
128gb Crucial M4 SSD
Asus M5A97

Current drivers:
Catalyst 12.10
All other drivers (chipset, SATA etc) all up to date

UPDATE: I totally fix the problem by skipping the HDMI Audio driver, but If you got integrated graphics, then you should try another Fix that worked for me in other computer with integrated graphics.

Try installing the integrated graphics card's drivers with Windows Update, after that just run the Catalyst 13.1 and Custom Install it skipping the HDMI Audio driver, this should work for all the people who have integrated graphics, somehow by installing your integrated graphics driver and the Catalyst 13.1 (Or whichever version is giving you problems) upon it is fixing the BSOD And all error messages you may get. (You can install Net framework 4 after, if you don't already have it.)

If you don't have integrated Graphics... Then I have no idea how to fix your problem, but most likely, integrated graphics have something to do with this problem (Disabling it from BIOS Or device manager won't work, tried countess times of differents manner, had to WASTE 3 days to find a fix that works for me)

And for the other guy, Sorry for "Your waste of time" but if you wanna fix it, you have to try, AMD Seems to not be aware of this.

I have no integrated graphics. I truly believe something happened during the 12.11 betas. Can't install 12.11 beta, 13.1, or 13.2 betas.

But 12.10 installs no problem every time.

Well, I made a little progress today. By disabling crossfire in the registry I can install the 13.2 beta and my computer restarts fine. The second I re-enable it, however, the screen just goes black.

I would just like to say a big thankyou for sharing this info with us.

I have a 6870 as my main card and am also using the onboard 4250 to stream movies to our tv in the living room. Disabling the HDMI Audio driver install on setup worked perfect for me.

13.1 installed perfectly and works a treat.

Again thankyou very much.

Nathan.

I'm in the exact same boat. I've looked though the patch changes to 12.11 beta but they didn't mention anything that would effect this.

For those of you who have this problem, I encourage you to submit it to AMD, maybe they'll do something about it.

Glad to heard that my fix worked for you, but I'm still feeling curiosity of what exactly cause this problem, so if anyone Ever find out what's going on, please let us know!

I am having the exact same issue as METAL,with the following differences:

I'm on W8 and can't install 13.1 or 13.2 beta. It freezes the entire system during install every time requiring a reboot, no BSOD though. The only driver that works with my config is 12.10. Anything from 12.11 - 13.2 FAILS :/

Gigabyte 970A-UD3
Crossfire 5770 + 5750
Kingston SSD
750W PSU Cooler Master

[strike]{edit}
I now have went back to Windows 7 and my Crossfire setup can now install with the latest 13.2 Beta 6 with No issues at all! So windows 8 will have to wait.[/strike]

edit 2:
I mispoke, am still running Win 7 x64 with Crossfire but am still stuck on 12.10 🙁

I have the exact same problem right down to the t, i'm using 2x HD7750s I can install 13.1 with 1 card inserted but as soon as I have both inserted windows craps itself with a black screen as it tries to start, trying to install 13.1 or the nexed driver before that with both cards inserted freezes with a black screen just as the ccc installer installs the graphic drivers.
Motherboard asus m5a97 evo, fx quad core 3.6gh, 2x 4 gig g.skills ram 1000 w psu win 8 and 7 x64

Interesting... I think you're the first person to have this problem with a 7000 series card (unless you meant 6750). Pretty much every other person with this problem has a 5000 or 6000 series card.

Did not work for me 🙁

I wonder if AMD is even aware of this problem yet, and it they will ever fix it?

We are paying customers and we payed for working graphics, so they better fix it.
I let amd know through customer care thing they have, they emailed me and said we will investigate it soon and gave me a ticket number.
http://emailcustomercare.amd.com/ every one go here and tell them your problems the more that ticket them the more chance they will listen and help us with this problem, crysis 3 runs good on 13.1 but not so good on 12.10, so I have a choice remove a card and have 13.1 (shits me cause i purchased 2 cards for a reason) or have both with 12.10 and lose performance, not that crossfire works with crysis 3 enyways

I would like to confirm that I too have the same issue, and my setup is very much alike your setups.

ASUS M5A97-PRO
X-fire 6870

And that would be all the essentials. Although one guy had an intel mobo and 7870 (not crossfire). So this is really weird.

I think the Intel guy was experiencing a different issue. So every person has 970 chipset?

Hmmm. It does seem we all have 970 chipset and CrossfireX. AMD please fix this.

Did you let AMD know? I still have not had a reply except for the automated crap

I had a hell of a time with this, first I flashed my main board bios to the first original release and holy crap it would not post, a little research and I found the bios was not compatible with my fx processor so I grabbed an older processor the pc booted with same issue with graphic drivers, I think I flashed nearly all the bios roms from asus for my board and all had the same problem so i'm back on the latest, tried with chipset drivers and without, tried everything from this blog and others I even flashed the bios on my graphics card which almost bricked them but I was smart and backed up the vbios so was able to rescue it. :)

this worked for me
uninstalled all amd wares/profiles
installed 12.11 cap2 -> no reboot -> install 13.1 ccc custom install w/ unchecking hdmi audio driver -> reboot

system specs
windows 7 ulti x64
xeon x3370 on biostar tpower i45 with dual radeon hd 6850s

Don't bother with drivers newer that 12.8 if you have 6000 series, i.e. with 12.10 my 6850 max. usage dropped to ~70 percent along with gaming performance (i.e. in Dirt 3 from ~42fps to ~31fps average) and with 13.1 I did not even try games as 3dsmax8 did not work at all with them.

OMG thank you sooooo much...worked like a charm....you're the man! :hello:
