Hello, and thanks for your help. I recently upgraded my computer to Windows 8 (a clean install), and was updating all of my drivers. Everything was going fine until I got to the drivers for my Crossfire 6870/6850 graphics cards. During the installation of the latest (13.1) catalyst drivers, my screen flashes as normal during a driver update, but then freezes on a black screen. On a hard restart I get a BSOD on atikmpag.sys. This issue also occurred on windows 7 with anything past the 12.11 drivers. I tried manually installing the drivers in safe mode, which works but still BSODs on a restart. The most progress I've made was getting to my desktop with the 13.1 drivers manually installed, but the BSOD occurred after a restart. I'm not overclocking anything. Thanks in advance.

Specs:
Windows 8
AMD Phenom II x6 1075T (stock)
Crossfire HD6870/6850
128gb Crucial M4 SSD
Asus M5A97

Current drivers:
Catalyst 12.10
All other drivers (chipset, SATA etc) all up to date

AMD know about this issue, this is what they said.

Thank you for contacting AMD

I understand that you are unable to get dual Radeon HD 7770 video cards to work with Catalyst 13.1. If I have missed any critical information please let me know as my suggestions may change.

With the tests you have done it is clear that it is a driver bug with Cross Fire X on Catalyst 13.1. We have also gotten some reports of the issue and have escalated for investigation. To help out with the investigation could you please create a bug report with us so it gets send to the Catalyst Engineers?

You can create a report at

www.amd.com/report

For now the temporary solution is to stay on Catalyst 12.10.

Please be aware that if we do not hear back from you, we will assume that the issue has been resolved and the service request will be permanently closed after 10 days. If more time is needed to evaluate my suggestion please let me know and I will ensure this service request remains open for you.

In order to update this service request, please respond, leaving the service request reference intact.

Best regards,

AMD Global Customer Care

How do I respond I need to tell this guy more? i know were to send the bug report but not know how to respond to this email, do I just reply via email, the email is not a noreply@such and such.

Just reply to the email saying that you will do the things they asked of you and that you look forward to seeing a solution, and maybe you're happy you could help.

I have a ATI 2400 Pro
Dell XPS 420 w/8gb RAM
Initial install was 64-bit WinVista
Inplace upgrade (yes I know horrible to do but was lazy) to Win7 64-bit

Worked well no problems except for missing DVD codecs. Two weeks ago BSOD. Installed secondary HD and installed fresh OS. Mostly working then BSOD. Installed the Beta CCM trashed my entire system. All of my data is intact (yippy!). However even an attempt to install an OS and BSOD. Tried to install a fresh copy of WinVista 64 bit but it BSOD on that as well. I think at this point my card is trashed will have to buy another.

This is really unacceptable to deploy buggy software that trashes a system and the BETA! trashes the video card. For some people this would mean a new PC. Very lame.

Your problem seems quite different from what the rest of us are experiencing. This sounds more like a hardware problem. You should have the BSOD's analyzed. There are many forums that offer this service.

yea m3tai is right you problem is different from ours and it seems you have faulty hardware but then i don't really know maybe contact Dell support or if you think it is your graphics remove it if it is a pcie, that card is really old isn't it. our problems we are having on this forum is using dual amd graphics.

I was running a dual display with the Radoen 2400 Pro, however, I had multiple problems which I've mostly remedied since my last post. I replaced the old Radeon 2400 pro with a Radeon HD6670. Now my dual display is hosed. I posted my challenge by beginning a new thread after I followed the advice of deselecting the audio drivers for the CCC install.

I was running successfully a Panasonic (plasma)TH37PH10UK cloned to a Dell Wide Aspect S2330MX.

Looking forward to feedback as I've provided my entire setup in the new message. :pt1cable:

Glad replacing your graphics and installing without audio drivers helped.

Been keeping an eye on this thread since it was posted. I had the same problem on a pc that I sold to a friend. I believe it was running catalyst 12.10 when he got it...auto update pushed it to 13.1, and problems ensued. Black screen, pretty much all the problems other users have had here.

Amd phenom x4
radeon 5770 1gb
8gb ddr2
windows 8 pro
Single display

The friend that has the pc isn't very computer literate. We all know how hard it is to fix a pc problem when we aren't in front of it. So I ended up finding this thread and it helped me fix his issue. PC was unable to boot, and got hung up in system restore...many different tweaks finally got it to boot in safe mode, disabled the video card to onboard video...uninstalled 13.1 and then installed 12.10 that I had saved to an SD card. Then worked like a charm. I was quick to make sure auto-update was turned off, else we would be back to square one.

Anywho, just wanted to let everyone know this thread is helping people (at least me!). I will be checking in to see how this gets resolved...and keeping my fingers crossed for bug free catalyst update.

How do you expect to have great performance or compatibility with newer drivers, if your too lazy to do a proper reformat and fresh install of Windows?
Google the advantages of doing a fresh install of Windows, yes it does matter.
You should not do an upgrade and just settle with that.
You definitely need to read up on Windows maintenance and procedures for hardware and software.
Get rid of Vista, that should not be used.
Here is a quick checklist:
1. Get a copy of Windows 7 Pro from various places and burn to disc or usb
2. Download drivers for your existing hardware, save them to an external device
3. Boot to Windows Install medium
4. Reformat Hard Drive
5. Install OS
6. Install Drivers
7. Install Antivirus/Security App
8. Check for Windows Updates via Control Panel
9. Install 3rd Party Browser (Chrome, Firefox, IE10)

DVD Codecs?
Who worries about those when you have choices of either VLC (videolan.org) or MPC-HC (mpc-hc.org)

If drivers are able to trash your system, you need to deploy a backup system. One product I use is Backblaze (backblaze.com).
$5 a month for total protection for ALL your data, yes even your external drives!
CrashPlan (crashplan.com) is another company to check out.

Good Luck and try to use the above information/tools. 😀

For anyone with crossfire and being stuck on 12.10, I am reporting that my attempt to install the latest 13.3 Beta 2 failed multiple times. If this continues for months, my 5750 and 5770 will be sold and replaced with a 2GB single card.

Same issue for me since trying to upgrade from 12.10. I have the Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3 board (yes, another 970) with two PowerColor 6870s (Win7 64, AMD 965 x4, 2x4GB GSKILL 1866, blah, blah). Install seems to work, but upon first reboot, BSOD (atimpag.sys is listed in the BS, event log references atieclxx.exe). Rebooting after that works, but it's using the default windows drivers and CCC can't recognize the cards. I attempted the registry suggestion mentioned earlier and it did not fix the problem for me.

I submitted a bug report and have received two responses, the last on Feb. 2nd. The first suggested trying 13.2 betas after using the AMD driver removal thinger (had used it previously with 13.1, too). Same result. The second recommendation was to try 13.1 again, but with nothing but the driver and CCC checked doing a custom install. Same result. Also tried installing the driver by itself. Also tried 13.2.5 beta. Same result for both. Install and reboot works fine if I remove the crossfire cable, so I could use 13.1 and later with a single card just fine, probably (and eliminate microstuttering issues at the loss of horsepower). 12.10 continues to reinstall flawlessly with crossfire, so that's what I'm using for now.

I'm glad their customer service is acknowledging the problem. Hopefully, they'll identify what this latest release broke for some of us and fix it. 13.1 is the first AMD driver with which I've had any problems over the years, but this was the first time I decided to try crossfire rather than upgrade to the newest generation.

13.3 beta 3 is no go as well, Nvidia is looking good right now but I will only be able to have 1 card as my board only supports xfire no sli 🙁 well really can only use one card anyway unless resort to using old drivers.

windows 7 and 8 both have a great back up utility already built in and its free, and you steps will not help us as this is a bug in the latest drivers which AMD have confirmed.

What motherboard does your friend have?

I have the same problem like many of you, but what would you say if I'd tell I do not have 2 VGAs so I don't use CrossfireX and my AsROCK 970 Extreme3 has no integrated GPU?

I have this same problem.

I have Windows 8 - 64 bit.

I was running fine on 13.1 (non beta version) for a few months.

I tried to update tonight to 13.3 beta and it gave the BSOD when installing the display driver.

Rebooted, tried again, same problem.

So uninstalled everything and went back to 13.1, only now I cant install 13.1, it just gives an error and says driver install failed.

I am on x-fire too by the way.

Now im stuck with no driver at all, cant install 13.1 or 13.3 beta. What am I supposed to do now AMD??

I think the 13.3 beta has corrupted my Win 8 install somehow, I might do a full system restore.

And I have already tried taking out 1 card and reinstalling drivers with just 1 card in mobo, no luck. Still doesnt work. I tried both cards separately and neither would work.

Also - just tried installing 13.3 beta again with just display driver only, and it got further than last time, but still BSOD with the 🙁 face and an IRQl_not_less_or_equal message. Now when it reboots, I have black desktop and Windows 8 pro Test Build 2600 in the bottom right of my screen.

Yes perhaps, I installed 13.1 with a complete new install of Windows, so I probably had to enable X fire afterwards. But why wont it now install with only 1 card in my system?

Any ideas with this:

Not sure you have the exact same issue. I still haven't had a single BSOD. The install freezes the entire system and I have to reboot. The system works after the reboot, only because it loads the default window's driver.

Maybe there is something corrupted with your registry or some other files? One thing you SHOULD NOT DO is use the AMD Uninstaller (not the Catalyst uninstaller but the special AMD utility here: http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/catalyst-uninstall-utility.aspx) on Windows 8. Only use it on Windows 7. The uninstaller corrupts W8 installs.

Also what motherboard do you have? We have pretty much figured out this problem only happens on 970 chipset boards with crossfire. If your board is 990X or 990FX then it's safe to assume you're experiencing something else.

Hello,

I am running the following

Intel i5 2400
Radeon 6850
MSI P67A-C43(B3)
Windows 7

I'll start this off by saying I'm pretty green when it comes to this stuff so I hope someone can help.

I update the CCC a few days ago and windows ran some updates last night. I rebooted no problem, but today when I came home and booted up my PC I had the black screen. I am able to boot in safe mode with networking (which is what I am using currently). It sounds like I am having similar problems to all of you, but I cant really tell. I am assuming, but am not sure if my CCC updated to 13.1 because when I attempt to open CCC it opens to "No AMD graphics driver installed...." error message and a different version than I am use to seeing and shows "HYDRAGRID" and the "About CCC" Shows version 2012.1219.1521.27485, which doesn't seem anywhere close to correct.

So, from this thread I think I need to uninstall AMD CCC using this AMD Catalyst Un-install Utility for Windows 7:

http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/catalyst-uninstall-utility.aspx

And the install the old version of AMD CCC 12.1 from here:

http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/previous/12/Pages/radeon.aspx?os=Windows%20Vista%20-%2064-Bit%20Edition&rev=12.10

Can anyone verify that these are steps I should proceed with? I would really prefer not to ruin my computer.

Thanks in advance for any input/support.

Right, slight update:

I installed 1 card only, and uninstalled all drivers. I installed 13.3 display driver only and it worked. Then I installed CCC only, and that worked, then tried everything else, and all worked except HDMI audio driver which failed.

I then installed the second card, and now Win 8 wont boot, just BSOD and restart every time.

I am on an Asus P8Z77-V Pro board with 2 x 5870 cards.

Is the answer to uninstall and go back to 12.10?

I think I answered my own question - tried installing 12.10 and no luck, gives the same BSOD as the 13 drivers.

Im thinking that 13.3 beta has either corrupted my Win 8 install or my hardware is broken - but - I didnt have any issues at all before trying to update to 13.3.

I tried a system restore to a point 2 weeks ago, and that didnt work, still BSOD.

Im now running a full system image restore from 3 weeks ago.
