Hello, and thanks for your help. I recently upgraded my computer to Windows 8 (a clean install), and was updating all of my drivers. Everything was going fine until I got to the drivers for my Crossfire 6870/6850 graphics cards. During the installation of the latest (13.1) catalyst drivers, my screen flashes as normal during a driver update, but then freezes on a black screen. On a hard restart I get a BSOD on atikmpag.sys. This issue also occurred on windows 7 with anything past the 12.11 drivers. I tried manually installing the drivers in safe mode, which works but still BSODs on a restart. The most progress I've made was getting to my desktop with the 13.1 drivers manually installed, but the BSOD occurred after a restart. I'm not overclocking anything. Thanks in advance.

Specs:
Windows 8
AMD Phenom II x6 1075T (stock)
Crossfire HD6870/6850
128gb Crucial M4 SSD
Asus M5A97

Current drivers:
Catalyst 12.10
All other drivers (chipset, SATA etc) all up to date

You can also try an installation with just 1 card installed, and when the system boots up successfully try to install the 2nd card at that time, as this has proven to be a viable option in the mean time for some users

What a load of crap this does not work for anybody lol, if this worked people would not worry about it, just install with 1 card restart and install 2 cards I wish it worked, we have only 2 options, use 1 card with latest drivers or use 2 with 12.10, maybe third option use the motherboard with the 970 chip as a dam boomerang and hope it doesn't come back.
my m5a97 evo is the first mainboard I have owned that supports 2 pciE cards so I'm pissed, had nothing but troubles with this board, do like how the bios has mouse support to use while in bios though

Same here. Mine is not the EVO just the M5A97... it was great, until i bought a second video card. 12.10 does work, but it leaves me with NO options in CCC. I had to do the Registry tweak to enable crossfire, i confirmed it was working with GPU-Z.

No when I say 12.10 works, I mean, i can load windows, and its not crashing. I can now play Battlefield 3 on Ultra, but since I am new to the game I am not sure if things are going wrong. I had small glitchy issues in other games that are fairly new.

using just 1 card for me works excellent, at the moment my other card is sitting on the desk collecting dust.
1 card no problems catalyst works fine games work good ah sorry I do have a minor issue with audio through hdmi but this happens on all drivers, the cards I own (hd7750) does not use a bridge for crossfire, all is controlled through the board so I was happy when others had this problem (sorry guys) but I thought it was a combination of this mainboard and the hd7750's not using a bridge but like I said earlier in this post 12.10 works ok it's just to old for the latest games I play.

I still having this problem with the 13.4 drivers, amd you can suck my dick, i don't know what to do now... i think i will not be able to hold another month or two months more in the 12.10.

I so fucking angry...

PD: I have a 6950 2gb crossfire and i have the same problem as you

I was un-aware it had been released. On the page it shows 13.4 and 13.5. I am going to install 13.4 and then put my second video card in. If it doesn't work I will not be happy either. They said in the e-mail that it would be fixed in this update.

Do you have the 970 chipset too? What MOBO are you using?

Ok, so on the AMD website now there are drivers 13.4 and 13.5 Beta.

I installed 13.4 on my PC running windows 8.

Rebooted
Shut down
Installed my second HD 6850

I booted, but it only got to the lock screen and then crashed. went black and locked up.

I am now going to use CCleaner and Driver Sweeper to remove everything and try 13.4 again. If that doesnt work I will move on to the 13.5 beta drivers. If that does not work, i am selling these cards and buying Nvidia.

Ok, so after i cleaned out all of the AMD/ATI SHIT from my PC, i rebooted and freshly installed 13.4 again. Made it a little farther this time, was actually able to log in, but the screen kept flashing. then finally went black and locked up. F&*^&%*&#&#*&@&^#&^#

Unplugging second card, uninstalling and trying 13.5.

Alright folks,

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME WITH 13.4 AND 13.5 THEY DO NOT FIX THE ISSUE

I have submitted two report forms tonight for both drivers. This is very maddening, and I really hope they get their shit together, I would even mail them my PC so they can recreate the issue.

Anyone else got a different experience yet?

same here, looks like its intel and NVidia for me in the future.
you no what, people told me not to get amd hardware but I did not listen, I was told amd would probably go bankrupt and that they were having lots of problems with there processors and also keeping quiet about it, I want my fucking $270 dollars back that I payed for these cards that I cant even use for the purpose I purchased them for and what they are designed to do FFS

I think the actual issue is coming down to the Chipset we have. A lot of posters on here have the ASUS M5A97 motherboard with the AMD 970 chipset onboard.

You may want to try another motherboard, preferably with the 990 chipset. AMD does make a good product I have stood behind them for years. But yes, this issue is making me consider the switch too.

Oh, man I was going to try the 13.4 and 13.5 betas too. Guess it's not worth the effort. AMD does make some good stuff (steamroller should be a very impressive jump in the right direction) but there is a reason this isn't being fixed. We are a small, small minority.

AMD driver team has many things they are working on that takes priority over us 970 chipset with crossfire people. Majority of crossfire is on 990FX or Intel. The driver team is spending night and day working on fixing the horrible performance/frame latency issues with crossfire. I think they're still working on that completely new memory management for the 7000 series cards as well. These issues trump us by a big margin, sad but true.

no way I will not purchase another main board, the one I have is reasonably new and xfire worked with 12.10 so I know they can fix this, I have also been on amd boards for years and never had problems but the mother boards I used to purchase were cpu sockets for amd but they had NVidia chip sets (sb nb), My graphic cards were always NVidia and never had a problem.
this is my first amd graphics cards and my first amd chip and its been horrible, so it should be understandable why I don't really have faith in amd.
first dog I ever purchased and it bites me, fucked thing is I cant really get a refund :)

12.10 worked for me too, but Catalyst Control Centre did not recognize that I had any video cards, but GPU-Z proved to me that they were both in fact working.

When I was running 12.1 on my old install of windows, 12.1 worked. but CCC did not show ANY cards on my PC. but GPU-Z confirmed they worked. I had to change a registry value to make them work.

Yes 13.4 or 13.5 did NOT fix the problem as they promised and I sent them another report in a rather infuriated tone. All they care about is their 7xxxx series and fixing flickering and minor corruption issues while we can't even get our crossfire to work. They have to fix this NOW - we can't wait another 4 months for the next WHQL driver. If I don't see a fix on the next beta, I am switching to nvidia (as much as it pains me).

Code:
i have the dam near same issue,
2x radeon 6850 HIS
ASus M5A97
AMD Phenom 960t quad core(unlocked to 1605T(6 core)
8gb 4x2GB
60GB Corsair forceware(something like that)

the only difference is that my solution was to go and download 12.10 drivers AND remove all Crossfire bridges, currently though my Mobo wont detect the second card so its still a W.I.P.

Ok so my current fix for this is to follow these steps.

Step one: Download AMD Catalyst Drivers 12.10 DO NOT INSTALL YET Put the File somewhere you will remember.

Step two: Remove all AMD Software from your computer.
AMD Cleanup Utility Should do the Trick

Step three: Restart system One Time, Then after you're certain that all drivers have been removed Shut Down your Computer

Step four: Open your computer case and remove your second video card(While ensuring that the first one is still plugged in ;D )

Step five: Start your computer normally, and once you have successfully logged into your user account please install the 12.10 Drivers

(to be continued momentarily)

I have 7700 series graphics and I have this exact problem, its not just the 6000 series, I think its all series if the following is true, you have a amd 970 chip, drivers past 12.10 and are using dual graphics and I say dual rather then crossfire because I don't even get a chance to enable crossfire with any driver above 12.10.
computer craps itself installing drivers or if installing with one card it craps itself as soon as both are inserted

Well I fixed it! ....... Not really, I went out and bought a Asus M5a99FX Pro Rev2.0 and a FX 6400 x6 processor. Installed both cards right from the get go, installed latest drivers, and it rebooted, and then asked me if i would like to enable crossfire. Man it felt good. I really hope they find a fix for this though. People should not have to go out and buy new hardware to fix an issue like this.
